Retrofit LED Headlights on Superb MkIII ?

Featured Replies

Anyone know if it's possible to retrofit LED Headlights on the new Superb MkIII ?

Skoda Superb has xenon headlights as I recall, not LED. Evenso, it is quite hard and costly. Because besides that you have to purchase the new headlights witch are expensive enough, you also have to adapt the leveling (auto leveling) sensors. On top of that you have to deal with the control for this new type of intelligent adaptive lights.

I think it is more easy to use aftermarket xenon kits. If they are legal.

I currently have xenon from the factory on it, so wondering if it would be as easy as just changing the bulbs

Problem as I see it now, is that low beam is quite useless... Near and low intensity.. I can barely drive at night

Drop in led bulbs are rubbish, they won't help at all. You'll end up with lots of unfocused foreground and no distance lighting.

Factory xenons should be fine if the headlights are clean and correctly aligned. Have you had them checked?

OK they are not as bright as say the Yeti xenons, but they are certainly better than halogens.

The same story with Superb II. Low beam too short. The only option you have is to change the original xenon bulbs to more powerful ones, like Osram Night Breaker Unlimited.

The nightbreakers are a great xenon bulb and have won various shootouts: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/accessories-tyres/93348/best-hid-headlight-bulbs-2016

Still, the OEM xenon bulb really should be fine, it's more likely to be down to poor headlight aligned assuming the projectors and headlights are in good condition.

Coming from Mondeo bixenons Superb`s ones are like going back to bright halogens. Very poor design of beam alignment. Dangerous to drive in forest areas as you cannot see ahead enough. Night Breakers make at least the driver`s side ditch more visible to avoid impact with moose.

High beam is great though.

When I had my Superb mk2 with xenons I was initially very disappointed with the low beam range. I took it back to the dealer who thought I'd been messing around with them (I hadn't). A quick adjustment by my dealer soon had them shining much further up the road when on low beam, not far off twice the range, high beam has always been really good. Perhaps they just need adjusting.

Mine locked in a 'town' mode soon after delivery and the pattern ended about 5m in front of the car. Dealer found it was stuck in transport mode - along with the DCC - and reset it. The beam now ends a good 20-25m ahead, maybe more.

When you first start the car do you get the lamps going through a vertical height adjustment sequence? If not then that might indicate a fault.

That`s not good at all. Modern car stops from 90 km/h speet at 35 - 40 meters. 1 second reaction time from noticing a danger to starting braking at 90 km/h is 25 meters. So low beam should be at least 60 meters, but Supeb hardly has 30 - 35 meters.

But on Superb III you can compensate this with Smart Light Assist. S II unfortunately doesn`h have this feature.

As in you can see the cutoff at 30-35m on the floor or after 35m there is no illumination?

With headlights at 70cm (similar to a superb) above the road surface set at a 1% drop you should be good for ~70m. I'd be very surprised if a stock xenon system was incapable of this when clean and well set up.

After the cutoff there is pretty much only darkness with stock xenon bulbs. As I told, upgrade will make visibility slightly better.

Seems to be Superb`s underengineering. I believe the graduation is more than 1,5%.

Anyway, Skodas to get LED headlights next year (Kodiaq and Octavia first, Superb following), which will hopefully solve the issue.

Sounds like the lights are set too low. When I got my Superb II with adaptive Xenons, it was almost unusable on dipped beams at night. The halogen bulbed Octavia I had before it was much better. Once it went back to the dealer to be adjusted correctly it has worked beautifully since. If the Superb III had got the light design wrong there would be a lot more than one or two people complaining about it here.
