Random 'beeping' from dashboard

Featured Replies

We've had an Octavia now for about 4-5 month, but during the last week I've noticed that it's started to give off a random beep, usually when moving slowing, i.e. pulling off the drive. There are no warnings or lights on the dash, and it's not something I've heard before until now.

It's not the rear parking sensors, as that noise comes from the rear of the car, and the random beep only happens when going forward. The car doesn't have front parking sensors.

The beep, is a 'beep', and not a 'bong', it's not the same noise you hear when it's icy or when you are low on washer fluid, it's more high pitched than that (similar to the rear parking sensor beep).

The beep is also totally random, I've just drove the car off the drive and it didn't do it, it only seems to happen first thing in the morning. The beep is not consistent, it's a quick on off on off on off totally randomly (like morse code).

Has anyone experienced the same? Anyone know what it is?

If you could record it on your phone (safely and legally of course) and post the video/link here, it will help people diagnose or recognise.
Something like this I would imagine would be almost impossible to answer without actually hearing it happen, and the leadup to it.

Yeh I tried to record it this morning, but now when I go out on the car it doesn't do it. The issue is that the beeping doesn't seem to coincide with anything that I do, so I have no idea when or if it's going to happen.

Brake pad squeak?

Brake pad squeak?

Nope, it's definitely a 'beep' coming from the dashboard.

I've been out again in the car just there, and it's not doing it. I think it only seems to happen on a morning.

I'd suggest you buckle up

Temperature warning ?  ,ie outside temp < 5 degrees ?

I'd suggest you buckle up

I wondered this? Could it be an occasional fault with whatever sensor detects if someone is in the front passenger seat? I get beeps if someone sits without belting up, but not if i open the door and shut again without getting in . . .

Temp warning or handbrake still on slightly?

Got something on the passenger or rear seats?

Otherwise the handbrake is fully off I take it?

I'd go for handbrake not released fully.

Got something on the passenger or rear seats?

Do you put a laptop bag or briefcase on the passenger seat? It may think there is someone sat there and want them to buckle up!

My 14 plate does this on cold mornings too. I believe, in my case anyway, its the touchscreen on the Bolero. It actually re-stored DAB startions and lost the logo on position 1 when I let it continue the first time.

All I do now is switch off the screen for 5 minutes and it never seems to happen. Maybe a similar thing on yours. I've convinced myself that running my finger around all of the outside edge of the screen when its turned off seems to stop it too.

Then seat belt warning light should be on

Hmmm I do wonder then if it's condensation on the touch screen from when I first get in the car on a morning. I have have an instance the other day where the touch screen completely froze, wouldn't response to touch and none of the buttons around the screen worked either. Had to turn the car off for 5 minutes or so before it would start working again.

I'll have a look into this one.

EDIT: Yep, looks like it's the touch screen, if I randomly tap anywhere on the screen it replicates the exact beeping sound. So I'm guessing it's condensation or something on the screen when it's cold.

Rear seats don't have sensors in them, only front seats do.

When In first start my 230 on the bottom right of the maxidot I get a Display of the 3 rear seats. If someone sits in the back and doesn't belt up surley it will show which seat is occupied but not belted up, If this is the case there must be some sort of sensor in the seat/seatbelt

My guess is that you are Rolling backwards slightly before driving off.

There will be a short beep from the MaxiDot in this case to inform you that it is activating the parking sensor system.

All the display shows is which belt is fastened.  It should be obvious to the driver which seat is occupied.....

This is why I stopped subscribing to Autocar. All the long term reports/road tests had nothing serious in them. Most complaints were about pairing mobile phones. Cars are just too good nowadays. Thank goodness. Annual exhaust replacement welding. A to z failure of major engine ,steering, suspension components , wheel bearings, I could go on, before 40000 miles was the norm. I like todays cars, if not the silly dashboard options.

There are sensors in the seatbelt locking system but none in the rear seat.

Vehicle knows if the rear seatbelts are locked or not but it doesn't know if anybody is there.

That is so weird, the same thing has happened to my wife's Octavia twice this week, not only does a beep sound go off but the radio keeps changing channels aswell. My initial instinct was condensation on the screen but said I'd check here to see has anyone else had a similar experience! I advised her to wipe the screen with a micro fibre cloth when there is a build up of condensation inside the car & no problems the past 2 mornings so far.... so could be just that

Is your infotainment screen set to beep when it's pressed? Maybe it's possible that the screen thinks it's being pressed?

I agree. My diesel estate does the same. Indicates who in the rear of the cabin has or has not buckled up.

Just to update this thread. It's definitely the touch screen, I'm guessing condensation or dust trapped around the edges.
