Columbus 2017 maps update

Featured Replies

Just wondering whether anyone has successfully updated to the latest ECE 2017 version of the maps for the Columbus yet?  Entering my VIN on the Skoda portal says there is a newer version of maps available and I've successfully downloaded it fine.  Problem comes when I extract the file to my SD card.  The card is formatted to FAT32 and the unpacking is pointed to the root directory, but after a fairly lengthy unpacking procedure (circa 2 hours) I'm getting a message that the size doesn't match the expected one.  Only option is to abort and try again.

Has anyone managed to unpack and update successfully?

Download the file, save it to the desktop.

Unlock the SD card via the Tab on the SD.

Copy & paste the old maps from the SD card to the desktop in a folder.

Format the SD card "Fat32"

Download & install Winrar.

Use Winrar to extract the files to a new folder on the desktop.

Copy & paste over the new map files.

Job done  As long as you are using a windows machine.

I use that method for my Amundsen & works every time.

That procedure isn't fully right for the Columbus since the maps are stored on the HDD. Not being picky, just want the OP to know he doesn't need to copy off old maps and overwrite them with new maps etc.

The rest of it is pretty sound though; unpack the downloaded 2017 maps zip to a folder on your PC using 7zip/winrar etc. Then copy the contents of the unpacked folder (IIRC there's 2 folders and a txt or xml document) to the SD card formatted as FAT32 (or ExFat) depending on its capacity.

Insert the SD card, go into the maps settings on the unit and tap Update Software and it should pick up the new update.

OP: Sounds like something corrupted along the way. Usually errors like that with zip files are due to incomplete download. Unzip to a local PC folder first rather than directly to the SD card as it will be much quicker. If you still get the same error extracting it to a local PC folder, you might need to re-download the maps zip.

Just to confirm, all updated successfully now.

Copied the downloaded files into a directory directly on my PC and unzipped them using the built-in (Windows 10) tool.  Then copied the uncompressed files (two folders and a text file) to the root of my SD card.  Stuck it in SD slot 1.  The car took about 30+ seconds to decide if what it had found was valid, confirmed it to proceed, and the full update to ECE 2017 then took 45+ minutes to apply.

Many thanks for the help!

Note - If anyone is using a MAC to download files then you will need to remove files added by Mac's finder I downloaded the app Clean My Drive 2 to clean up the SD card and everything worked first time.

I didn't need to do that on my Mac, the update worked first time.

Please can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong before I shoot myself in the head.

I still cannot get my Columbus in my VRS updated from the 2014 maps to the 2017 ones.

I have downloaded the ZIP file from the Update Portal.

Unzipped it to a folder on the computer. Copied the contents to the root of the SD Card. Inserted into the car and everytime I get a error saying error: no data available.

I have a Mac, but I'm doing everything within Windows 10. SD Card has been formatted to FAT32 as per website instructions. Its a 64GB Micro SD card I'm using in a SD Card Converter.

Should there be 1 folder on the root of the SD card, or should there be the mib1 and mib2 folders?

Can anyone shed any light on what I'm doing wrong? The only issue I can see is that I'm using MicroSD to a SD adaptor, should I buy a brand new 32GB SD Card?

Hi I know how frustrating it can be...download Clean MY Drive 2 from App store and it will clean up your card. The Mac puts hidden files on the card which the columbus does not like. Clean the disc and then add file lock then eject but don't go into Finder after cleaning as it may put more hidden files on there. Hope this helps....

PS there should be two folders MIB1 and 2 plus the one file nothing else. Note you may have hidden files still on the card if you have used it in your MAC.

I have re-done it from start on my Mac in macOS.

Done exactly as you have said, card is still formatted as FAT32. Copied over the files, used Clean My Drive and removed the junk, ejected the card and I have locked the card so no more files are modified on it. Will give this a go.

Good luck... it looks good. Was the any hidden files???

Yes - working now! Has only took me around 6 months on and off.

I think locking the SD card after deleting the hidden files resolved the issue, as everytime it was plugged back into the Mac, Spotlight re-indexed the card and created a hidden folder.

Hidden files was defiantly the issue!

So glad its worked for you.

Skoda website states Columbus update on Superb Elegance Columbus sat nav  "can only be updated at service".  The cost was quoted as £203 + VAT, has anybody found a 'work around'?59df8ed166e88_ScreenShot2017-10-12at16_47_03.thumb.png.7e6320ffd2cccc32dd30227a70283383.png

Does anybody know how to remove the limitation on the number of update with OBDEleven ? On my car I'm limited to 3 map update...

3 map updates sounds strange? Are you given an error when trying to update your maps?

Originally it was 6 updates over 3 years (2-per-year) when the Octavia was released.

However, I've read on the forum that Skoda have scrapped the 6-update limit and they will now be free for all.

My car will be 4-years old in april next year & I successfully installed the last update which was the 7th since the version the car was built with.

Hopefully the November update also installs correctly.

My car is over 4 years old and is still showing updates, although it is often easier to use the direct download links that can be found from time to time.

Hi,

The only time I made the map update, I had a message telling me that I still have 2 update left... so I don't really want to give a try 2 times a year... Therefore my question, is it possible to check this and change it with OBDEleven ?

I've never heard of anyone having this message before on the O3

Which head unit do you have ? MIB1 or MIB2, Columbus, Amundsen ??

As I understand the original way the updates were supposed to work, you have 6 updates over 3 years.

This is controlled by version number not by the number of times you try to update the maps.

e.g. if your car is built with map version 1000 you can flash 1001, 1002.... 1006 as many times as you like but then it wont let you upload 1007.

Therefore, you couldnt download a new map once every 2 years to make the free updates last longer. (it would work after 2 years but not after 4 because the version number would be 1009)

However, as before it was reported that this was scrapped by Skoda to give everyone free updates.

As no-one else on the forum had reported a message about number of counters left it seems like its working like this for several people.

Well, I have a Colombus.

I'll give it a try one day, as I didn't update in the last 2 years. I'll see if I still have this message, and make a picture if i can.

Thank you for this advice! I had the same issue with 2018 maps but now it is working and the card was recognised (after cleaning it with Clean MY Drive 2).

Without knowing what car you have, what year it was built, what model it is, what system you have fitted etc. it's kinda hard to help.

Sorry  it's a 14 plate superb with Columbus syystem

Then the dealer is correct. The free online update is for the later model (MIB) Columbus. Yours needs a dvd update disc which doubtless can be found for free or cheaply online. This thread is for the Mk3 Octavia, and the Mk3 Superb will now be included in this detail, but the Mk2 is a different issue I'm afraid.
