new mk2 vrs owner

Featured Replies

Hi all,

a long while back i brought a 06 2.0PD elegance with a view to cleaning up and selling on long story short he couldn't afford it and i ended up liking it and keeping it.

i was going to buy a C220 AMG but stumbled across a mint Mk 2011 VRS Tdi so i have a few questions before i part with my money as ive only left a deposit at the mo.

not sure on the engine code as i forgot to jot that down

Sat nav -  it's got the bolero mp3 touchscreen in it, can this be easily upgraded or is it a swap to the Columbus.

does the bolero have RCA input on the back ??

its done 52k, its had a flywheel and clutch change (im going to call the company and confirm this tomorrow) does it need the cam and pump doing (i know its normally 60k) how much roughly would this cost?

Anything i need to look out for specifically

i pick it up friday afternoon, on the basis the test drive and everythings ok

any advice would be much appreciated

just done a vehicle check on it and the mileage concerns me, see photo. it does state at the bottom mileages are supplied by 3rd parties and cannot be validated.

also noticed it was mot'd 2015-16 which expired 20jan 16 then it wasn't mot'd again until Sep 2016.

what do you guys recon is this one to stay clear from? everything else came back on the check clear.

Well i know it's after 1a.m right now but it looks like the mileage goes backwards. 12th Jan 2015 mileage recorded as 48,467 then on the 27th Jan 2016 mileage recorded as 45,000. Unless I've read it wrong. You can check on dvla site for mot's/mileage.

I'm no expert but is 52k for a clutch and flywheel not suspiciously early? Could this suggest the car has had a new engine at this time and these items replaced whilst engine was out? My Scout flywheel and clutch were done at 60k because the new engine went in then. For details on the issue of new engines see the sticky at the top of this forum.

In the diesels, the CR is the better engine with DPF integration, 2011 should be CR AFAIK.

The sticky thread is only applicable to petrol engine failures, so no use reviewing that.

There should be a stereo 3.5mm connection in the jumbo box under the armrest.

The columbus can be fitted but depending on what is in there you may need DAB aerial / certainly a satnav aerial shark fin type fitment.

I'm not a diesel owner but AFAIR cambelt is 5 years and 80k. You will be at 5 years now presumably.

The mileage reports look kind of ok, but there should be a report at least every 12 months from MOTs?  The second last one goes backwards but at a clean 45,000 sounds a bit like someone has guessed it and input. But at the same time it only shows 10k miles between 12 Jan 15 and 22 Sep 16 (only about 500 miles a month and half of the previous usage).  Worth a question, to the seller, did ownership change, change of job etc, on a forecourt?

Some vehicle checks show the source of the mileage record, that could help point to the issue with the 45k reading. You could run another one from a different provider. Ask the seller for MOT records etc....

thanks all,

yes it has the jack in the box. yeah I thought it could be an input error or they have just told an insurance company its got 45k and that's been added to a database.

details are as follows:

new keeper change 29 Apr 2014 (so I guess that could explain the sudden drop in mileage originally registered to a company so I guess it was a reps lease car for 3 years)

Engine Vrs Tdi Cr

it only has 3 MOT's

14 - 38,175

15 - 48,467

16 - 58,868

the interior seems to match with the age and mileage, slight bit of wear on top of the gearstick plastic like a haze or slight scratching (maybe caused by a ring?) no wear on the drivers seat

having the mileage checked on the ECU via VCDS - which somebody correct me if im wrong should display the correct mileage

I'd be less worried about the 45k mile outlier, but as you've pointed, not having a valid MOT for 8 months seems a bit of a question mark?. Another mistake, maybe,  also corresponds to the period over which the 45,000 mile reading was taken. Overall mileage probably ok if it all fits with wear but what is the non use about if not a mistake...Even a dealer would keep MOTd.

I'm sure it is a nice car, I've got a 2011 vRS TSI Combi.  As good as the vRS is, I don't think it will match a C220 in cabin ambience and probably not on dynamics balance either as stock set up.

All personal opinions of course.

It does report mileage.  Not sure if it is tinkerable or not!

thanks Client

the guy says there is no service book, he has invoices, but not the book is this common place now?

my old octy's book has the radio code and engine codes in it etc, can i get a new one and how would i find the radio code if it has one ??

Edited by Gissin
spelling

The can bus should remember the radio code so shouldn't be a problem when changing batteries. Otherwise you're going to have to ask a dealer to retrieve it. You may be able to retrieve it wit VCDS as well, not 100% sure. The code was on a card I think - I don't have one for my car and didn't get one with my Mk5 Golf, clearly they're easily lost being separate from anything else.

There is a service book, I have mine. It just has the recommended service schedule at the time and the place for service stamps. It also has a PR code sticker of the major fitment items in your specific  car which should also be in the boot beneath the carpet.

Yours has been misplaced, accidentally or deliberately! If there are receipts for most items, I guess accidentally.

yeah I agree but finding a 220 around 2011 with less than 60k on the clock for under 10k was like trying to find plastic, in a haystack with a magnet :D

tomorrow is the day so ill keep you all posted and let you know how I get on, should I buy it I already have some work planned on it B)

I would check the v5 as that will have the engine number in and chassis. Then compare them to the car. Also get a hpi check done to see if it has been reported as being in any accidents etc. If the car is from a garage then you will be covered by the consumer rights act if something dodgy is found on it in months to come.

Yeah Ive checked the vin and I've done a full comprehensive check on the car and everything came.back ok apart from ones I've already stated.

How long do you intend to keep the car? I think you should also consider whether the mileage discrepancy and not having the book will cause you trouble selling it or end with you having to give the next owner money off.

I would grab a photo of the option sticker under the boot carpet and make sure it belongs to a vehicle of the spec you think it is. A dealer or someone on here should be able to help you decode the 3 letter codes on the sticker. It's easy enough to buy new badges to make a car look better than it is but changing that sticker is a much bigger job.

Have you called a Skoda main dealer? There should be a record on their system of every time a dealer has seen any car. That may help ironing out the mileage issues and seeing whether it has been serviced correctly.

I really don't like the look of that 8 month MoT gap. It could mean that the previous owner didn't look after it or that it did sit on a forecourt for a long time and for some reason the garage couldn't get anyone to buy it. It may also be something innocent like the owner being sick for an extended period and unable to drive. Whichever it is, they would have to have declared SORN on it or got fined as I'm sure the mandatory tax or SORN rule was in place then.

Good luck.

cheers man,

well if all is well with the car then I intend to keep it for at least 4 years. I'll check with him again to make sure I have all the paperwork he has.

ill check under the carpet  yes called main dealer they confirmed service NOV 2013 at 37,915 which matches with the history and invoices for other services and maintenance done.

to be honest if he hasn't got the service book ill speak to Skoda about getting a replacement

It sounds to be a nice car and I always enjoy driving my Octy VRS diesel. I cannot think of another car that is as fun to drive yet so practical for everyday usage and doesn'tcost the earth to run or buy.

This is the car..  T minus 10 hours to viewing / buying

_20170428_093120.JPG

I'm not sure that car's being sold by a dealer. The only place I can find any mention of the supposed dealer is a mobile number and a facebook page. His location is a residential road in Rotherham. Most likely he's just a bloke who sells a few cars and likes to think he's more important than he actually is, and there'll be a distinct lack of response once you buy a car and find out there's a problem with it.

Given the situation with dubious service history, dodgy mileage, and a dealer who hardly exists, I'd be walking away from this one.

It's been mentioned previously but that mileage discrepancy will always be there. It will almost certainly affect future resale values. Any hpi check on the car will flag it up. I had this issue last year when I'd sold my Leon and was searching for an Octavia. Found a well specced pre f/l on Autotrader. Rang the dealer arranged a viewing but as it was a long way to travel i checked the car before setting off so the purchase could happen straight away. The hpi check came back ok but with a mileage discrepancy just like this one. The dealer was lovely tbh he went through service book and mots etc all seemed to check but as it was a round figure on the mileage it probably was a seller filling out the log book and just guessing the mileage. He was looking into having it corrected through dvla but tbh i don't think it's an easy process. Like mentioned, it will be your problem when you come to sell it on.

So, Checked it over again I appear to have missed alot first time round, drivers door window wasn't working properly, speakers drivers side were not working, front and back.. drivers bolster looks like it had been split and repaired also waytootall came out and ran vcds on it see file below. Safe to say I walked away

Can't access that download.

All that damage / stuff not working is on the same side, so my guess is it's been in a side impact and badly repaired outside the insurance.
