Found a nice petrol... What are people's thoughts on petrol vs desiel vrs?

I bought a petrol one and it's fabulous (suspect it may have had a trip to the tuners but the dealer I bought it from assured me it hadn't.) I would buy another petrol if I was getting one. They aren't that cheap to run (Mk2 Pre-FL, MPG in the 30s on motorway, 20s if driven in a "spirited" fashion) but the fun factor makes up for it, IMHO.

The diesel is never going to be as potent as the petrol but may have more low down torque from a standing start. My friend used to have a Mk.1 and was rather dismissive of the diesel.

I've never been a diesel fan so bought the petrol vRS a Mk2 pre fl.  I've had it fettled a bit with some simple mods and it's a great all rounder considering.  As for economy, I managed 44mpg on a 120 mile run yesterday and have averaged 36mpg overall in the 13 months I've owned it.  Most of the time it does a quick 7 mile trip to work and back so the fuel consumption is never going to be great.  I did a couple of longer runs on the last tank and Fuelly showed it as averaging 37.6mpg over 396 miles.

With a decent remap the car really wakes up too.

edit - the 120 mile journey was on A roads, so not a constant & steady run either.

Right off to go look at another one 12 plate slightly more miles but much better vibe no dodgy miles, looks in better condition he also knows all the history, previous owner for 3 years front new then him.. New company car is the reason for sale which I can see sat on the road.. Keep you all posted

Well, I got it, 2012 full main dealer service history, immaculate inside and out made the other one look like crap which makes me beleive more the mileage had indeed been clocked.. So if anyone looks at FD60 NCO don't buy it.

This guy seemed genuinely sad to see it go also he kept every recept even for things like lamps / bulbs.. Drove it home 55miles and it's lovely to drive although not as much power as I expected compared to my old 140pd.. Very happy indeed.   Now to start modding it

Had to travel, only 55 miles each way so  not too bad, got it just outside of Leicester

Well done glad you've found a nice example. It should be producing way more power than a 140tdi. It maybe the lack of torque your missing but rev the petrol through and it should go very well. If it feels like it's holding back it could be a tired diverter valve. Very common problem mine was gutless when i bought it and that's what it was. I had no warning lights either. Sounds nice though.

It's the 170 tdi I've got not the petrol. Probably haven't given it the beans yet for  a fair comparison.

Detailing session on it tomorrow so should look nice and shiny..I'll post some photos up.

Q So, I've had the car for a few days covered about 200 miles and I'm very impressed. Love the mfd, having oil temp on there is great! I've given the car a good clay clean Polish and sealant.

Now it's time for some changes to make it mine.

Ive ordered some vrs seat height inserts

Going to colour code the grill

Looked at dtuk and bluespark cr tech 2...  Are these any good.. Or do they just overfuel??

Id go for a shark remap personally.

I have the same car as you and am pretty handy with the spanners so have retrofitted a fair few bits to mine.

Whats the cost on a shark remap? The only reason I asked about the boxes is I've been offered thr bluespark one for £40.

Yeah at some point I'll be getting round to new drilled groved disks and pads, possibly springs and shocks or coilovers, tints might change the HU,

Never had a cr engine whats it like changing the injectors over?

im not one for mechanical mods so i cant help you but have a look here of what i fitted.

I have those seat inserts, certainly look factory, the indent looks like something always belonged there.

With regards to tuning boxes no idea on the Bluespark but I just fitted a DTUK CRDT one to mine (older style) I bought off a member here, it's set on 4+1 and it certainly makes a big difference, the car now flies, I have always been a fan of remaps and mapped my own previous VAG cars but I couldn't do this one but will get a remap in the future, the box is dual channel so does fuel and boost, a remap is better but for the price I paid I'm happy for now.

your car looks great, to be honest most of what you have done is what I had in mind anyway, so our cars might end up looking quite similar

so, I did 400+ miles  in the car this weekend, no complaints other than the seats are not overly comfortable after about 2 hours the base is a bit narrow for me being 16st.

unfortunately I had a blowout on the motor way drivers side rear, the tyre shop didn't have the Michelin pilot sport 4's in so ive banged a budget on until I can have it replaced although the budget has fairly good ratings and is matching tread pattern to the Michelins.

next few bits to do on the car, full leather clean with heaven for leather by angel wax, following full detail over the weekend, snow foam, clay, colour correction, polish and seal, including taking the wheels off for a good scrub and wax coats by poor boys.

parts on order to be fitted:

Mudguards

heiko tinted wind deflectors

alloy foot rest

boot tray liner

number plate surrounds with pressed plates

new centre caps (new black badge design)

new black front and rear badges

green cotton air filter

Next after that:

Remap

front splitter ( to be confirmed which )

Undecided bits

front and rear strut brace??? (not sure )

uprated RARB ? -  is this necessary?

stereo upgrade to andmunsen or Columbus
