Sasha’s Octavia vRS

Agree with the touch screen comments.

We had a the latest gen 1 series BMW for a couple of years. Screen on the top of the dash in the line of sight and idrive with the mouse type wheel and physical buttons on the centre console is far easier to operate on the move.

Saying that we have Android Auto on the Yeti and the voice control is excellent for Navigation and for accessing music if it's on your phone.

All the touchscreen comments are so true! The latest luxury cars are coming out with virtual displays and touch sensitive controls for everything (new Audi A8 anyone?) which seems to be the way we are going and that worries me as adjusting something simple like the temperature could have you take your eyes off the road for a very long time. I can change temperature in the Octy with it’s nice solid clickwheel without looking for the button, and just a quick glance down to check I’ve hit the right temperature. I was unsure about having a touch screen system in the car at first as apart from the PID in the Citigo (which doesn’t really count) it’s a new one on me. My only big wish is that it would have had Apple CarPlay as that would really make a difference to me, but sadly it’s not a straightforward retrofit and thanks to the position of the USB and the size of the phone it wouldn’t all fit in the little drawer so I’d always have the cable on show anyway. Shame.

I too would love to have Apple CarPlay (via WiFi or Bletooth not USB though).

Slight tangent - where can I fit a Qi charger pad and be able to charge an iPhone 7+ (I've added a Qi receiver which is great at home but as it takes over the Lightning connector means I can't use a normal charging lead)?

Would it fit in the phone box thingy? When my iPhone 7 Plus gets to the end of the payments (I was going to upgrade when the 11 month upgrade marker came around as I bought mine on the upgrade programme but I have decided to keep it for now) I might decide to go for the X if they release some new colours and I would be looking at putting a wireless charge pad in the phone box. The X is a smaller phone though, I know my 7 Plus with the case on is a very snug fit!

I am sorry Sasha but you are bad and have made me buy a silicon key cover and what is sadder is that I have bought one in red to match the car, going to have to lie down in a darken room. never had touch screen before and will see how it goes, not able to make judgement on it yet and also want to see how the voice command system work to make it safer.

Hey, mine is grey to match my car! Mercedes one is Pink just because :) Voice controls are getting better all the time, I find them very hit and miss in my car and rarely use them but this is MIB1 Bolero, the oldest and most basic system fitted to UK Spec Octavia’s. I’m sure a newer system would be better.

My "Winter key" is more or less splashproof and my "summer key" is a bit more stylish...

I've got the "ashtray" which we use a lot for sweet wrappers, and it definitely won't fit on that - and even if it did SWMBO wouldn't allow me to block the ashtray!

I've been completely unable to make the voice command system understand my "Sarf London" accent...

Yep, you made me buy one too! At least, that's my excuse ;)

This is good we can blame Sasha for anything we do right or wrong especially when we spend over £5 on the car.

VAG's voice recognition is pretty pants to be honest. But if you are using Android Auto or Car Play then the voice recognition is done by Google and Apple so works great.

Don't even need an address or postcode for most businesses or even a phone number for making calls.

Just say "Navigate to Odeon Cinema Mansfield" and off you go.

How long did it take for your covers to arrive from China? Mine's getting on for a month now and still no sign

I will apologise before I write this but ordered yesterday on Amazon and got it today through Amazon Prime. colour is better than the photo a brighter red. bought from Muchkey. I have a cunning plan I will order you one you can then make the short journey up and explain all the gadgets and codes and smart link and connect and tow bars and thingies and I can give you the key cover. The benefit is that your order will most likely turn up on the day.

Starting to think I should have just prime ordered it. They were less than half the price on eBay though and I'm a tight arse! :D

Now I do like that. You see, these things are great! I ordered mine for £0.97 on eBay with free post and it was here within a week but I had to wait an age for the Blue one I use as spare for the Merc. Sometimes they don’t get here until the last couple of days of the estimated date of delivery, but they mostly get here quickly. Odd really.

Thanks, looks like I have another couple of weeks to wait then. Never usually order stuff from China; I'm far too impatient! :D

It's arrived. Now let's see how much damage I can do to my €41k new car!!!!

Just got an OBDeleven today. I'm afraid I cheated and used the app which has the coding already done for you. However I did manage to change the indicator from 3 flashes to 5 by myself. Don't ask me how, I haven't got a clue!!!! With the app I did the N/S mirror dip on reverse. This probably moved the mirror about 15mm in the dip position. So I don't think it's going to be of much use to man nor beast. Also knocked the headlight washers off and fuel amount to refill on dashboard.

Nice one :) my mirror dip drops right to the bottom unlike many but it doesn’t come back up again sadly.

Nothing wrong with cheating, now I’ve been slowly accumulating credits I may be tempted to cheat myself next time!

Mine comes back up ok if you turn it from L to 0. Haven't checked to see if it will do it by itself when you start driving forward yet. Looking for the throttle coding change next if I can find it anywhere.

Can confirm it moves back to its normal position when driving forward.

Mine when mirror adjusting is set to R (in UK L I suppose) is only dipping it, in 0 it does not - you don't always need it dip, sometimes it is more important to see if someone is approaching, then watch for the curbs. You can also play with 0 and R (L) depending what you need to see.

On R (L) when you start driving it will go back to original position, I am not really sure when, maybe when it switches off parking sensors - sometime when you put in second gear.
