Is it just the screen that is needed to update or do you need the glove box unit too?

Both, plus the USB plug.

Ta, I'll hunt for a FL unit.

Yeah you’ll need the unit in the glovebox, the screen and the USB plug. If you want a Columbus there are a few out there not at huge money (have just seen an as new Harman unit for £280 buy it now) so if you can get one of them with a cheap 8 inch screen you can get that activated here in the UK by many places remotely once CP has been disabled. You’ll need to shave down some of the connectors to fit, but it’s a 30-40 min install all in :)

Cheers, bought that Harman unit. Have you seen any screens about?

Only from EU sources. Your options are really to either hang fire until one turns up in the UK or bite the bullet and get one from the EU. I looked at Columbus but with the cost of the unit, the screen, the activation etc will come out a little more than what I’m spending on the Amundsen, although when you consider I want to add the new FL screen it’ll work out about the same or a little more ££ but it’ll give me the look I want and I didn’t have to wait ages to get the bits. Got lucky with the Amundsen and found the radio and screen together from a breakers yard and it was here within 2 days. They say patience is mofe often found in women than in men. They are wrong!

Ah, so can the FL screen go with a MIB2 glove box unit? I was thinking the FL version was MIB3 or something like that.

Yep, straight swap apparently, just different colour lighting (white versus the green on the Pre-FL) and the "App" button doesn't do anything.

Thread here with part numbers:

There’s a source in Germany that supplies new screens for €270 which is a bargain IMO. They will have my order when the radio is all working.

Facelift screens? I think the new Columbus screen will be harder to come by, and probably cost much more! I'll be happy with the pre-facelift Columbus screen to be honest.

Just need to find a USB thingy, I'm assuming the white/smaller one is the newer model and there's only 2 parts, one for MIB1 and one for MIB2

I've also found a local garage that can do component protection and SmartLink so getting a quote from them before trying a dealers

Amundsen facelift screens. There was a 9.2” Columbus display on German eBay but it had a scuff on the trim, think it was €400 and they had an as new pre fl Columbus screen for €300. There was a new 9.2” display on Russian eBay for about €400 but you’d have to pay lots of shipping etc to get it here.

I got a used Columbus screen for £190, so about £450 altogether before coding, the way I see it with this upgrade is that it's not going to increase the value of the car when I come to sell but I can just put the Amundsen back in and sell the Columbus. So it's a free upgrade

Is it the smaller white USB plug I need, I can't seem to find anything to confirm that online?

  • Author

Nice one, that’s pretty cheap tbf. You need the longer green plugged USB. The white one is the older plug. I got mine free with the radio. Can’t imagine TPS charge a fortune for one of those. I’d get you the part number, but I’ve fitted it and I didn’t take a picture sorry.

It's okay, i've got one now!

I'm a bit concerned about the screen I've bought, some conflicting stories saying there there's one, and some saying there's multiple versions. P/n is the same, 5E0919606, but the 4 numbers after the p/n on the unit differ by age. I guess i'll find out when/if it's coded.

I suppose so! Hopefully it’ll work anyway. Will be a nice upgrade that into a Columbus!

GPS antenna has been fitted today and working. I took the screen out and found a nice metal support bracket to attach it to (handy being magnetic) and the time is now set via GPS and the fault in the 5F module has been reset. Lovely :)

I've got a new Octavia as a courtesy car today, the new Amundsen screen is very impressive, a big jump from the old model. I'm wishing I waited for a new Columbus unit.

Just over £8 for two covers & two metal ends, delivered in two weeks from Ali Express...although the metal ends seem to have gone up very slightly since.

There is a VCDS adaptation to set the headunit to automatically apply daylight savings.

Can't remember what it is atm, but it is on the infotainment module.

Probably all the people off here buying them, guy can make more money

I’ll sort out auto DST shortly. I’m away now and my OBDEleven is at home.

The Blue one didn’t look like it was Race Blue and was described as Green so plumped for Black.

Also ordered the Chrome bits.

Do you know if the screen is component protected or is it just the main unit, I don't want to pay twice if I decide to get a FL screen in a bit!

  • Author

Just the radio, screens are no issue. I used the MIB2 screen with the old MIB1 radio in the glovebox for a couple of days before I had the component protection removed :)

Did the MIB2 screen work 100% with the MIB1 radio straight away, or did you need to have component protection removed for that to 100% work?

And if the MIB2 screen works with the MIB1 radio will the MIB2.5 (MIB3?) screen also work 100%?
