Installing Speed Cameras on The Amundsen MIB2 - Free Database and Quite Simple to Do!

@sweeneyuk Have you had the road time to determine how good/ accurate the poibase DB is in the UK.

Have compiled an SD Card with fixed/ mobile cameras but not uploaded yet as curious as to the accuracy and always previously used pgpsw on TomTom’s.

I've had to remove a few from motorways, which you can do in the program so you will have my edits. but the rest seem ok so far. I've only used been around Blackpool where i live and up to Carnforth and cant complain.

The big test will be from next week when I'm back at work and travelling about the north west.

 sweeneyuk.

Will load them up tomorrow now and see what there like.

Will need to look into the edit side of things though in case I come across extras/ inconsistencies.

next add which cameras you want then synchronise.

when done you can add to the nav.

Thanks but... I don't want their cameras, I want my PGPSW database cameras, which are up to date (30/05/18), not something that's probably a month or more old and of dubious quality.

So POIbase doesn't cut the mustard.

So POIbase doesn't cut the mustard.

Have a look around the program. You can import POIs up to a maximum of 5 categories for free, any more are paid I believe.

The file types to import are the same as the Skoda website.

I can now confirm that POIbase does the job however there's a catch and that it'll cost you both time & money.

The initial restriction of 5 categories can only be lifted by paying approx £4,50, this will lift it from 5 to 20, which is OK if you choose the consolidated download, if you choose speed zoned then you're going to run out of categories.

Also it will take a considerable length of time to do it once the payment has been made and if you use PGPSW cameras, you're still going to come up short with categories as there are 34 unless of course you cut the TBA/Pmobiles & Variable Speed cameras out (in which case there are 29), TBQH knocking out the TBA one's should be OK, but by law of sod it'll be one of the latter two that will nail you for a ticket, so I'd leave them.

When you upload each category for some reason it takes the server anywhere between 15-30 minutes to process it before it becomes available to add to your collection to transfer to your SD/USB drive and then it takes some additional time to do that transfer too depending on how many things you have converted.

So, yes it works. Until such time as someone can write/publish a website or program that will do it you're going to have to pay a small fee to get them done and you're going to need at least an hour or more to get it uploaded/processed/downloaded and transferred back to an SD/USB stick.

If you want to chance your arm on using POIplaza or other databases, be my guest, but PGPSW offers the most up to date camera database I know of.

After several days of trials and errors, I've finally sussed out the problems with the Skoda POI site which have been confirmed by the posts of members in a Columbus thread in this forum. There are mainly three issues. The first one is that the Skoda site does not convert your icons to the correct size/format i.e. 39 x 39 .png which the VW site did. That's easily rectified since there are many free online image converters available or alternatively you may use the ones used in my speed camera uploads which were created using the VW site. The second issue is that a "server error in "/"application" error is displayed when you download your poi collection. The reason for this is because when you give your collection a name or title it must not contain any spaces. So, for example, you should NOT give it a name like "my uk cams" but instead name it "myukcams". The third and main issue is the fact that the Skoda site produces text files containing  incorrect checksums in the poi files. Thankfully a member has written a python script which automatically performs the process of recalculating and correcting the text files. All credit must be given to flumpie for taking the time in creating and sharing this script. The link to the thread containing his upload is here:

https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/441437-speed-camera-pois-in-columbus-a-new-guide/

After installing python and when using his script please note that the path quoted in his post is for the MIB2HIGH folder which is for the Columbus MIB2 unit. For the Amundsen MIB2 unit the path should be to the MIB2TSD folder.

Hope this is of help to everyone.

Way too complicated. I work under the adage of keep it simple.

As it is I got POIBase to do it, albeit taking an hour to do it, correctly. But I also just downloaded the camera files to my Garmin, popped it on the dashboard and got the alerts that way.

Why I bothered I don't know, I left for Williton on Wednesday and apart from the fixed cameras I never saw a single mobile camera van anywhere, not even one of the sneaky shoebox roadside ones. On Sunday, I left Blue Anchor where I'd been staying, went to Crowcombe station, Bishops Lydeard station and then on to Taunton, apart from the normal fixed cameras again I never saw a camera van anywhere, Sat Nav was doing it's thing chiming away merrily, no vans though.

Journey from Maccy D's at Hankridge Way to home, 2h 10m, would have been quicker if I hadn't been delayed by the 5 sets of lights on Guildford gyratory and A281 and no camera vans or cops on those routes either. :o

Here's my current latest customised version ( June, 2018 ) which I'm offering to share if any forum members want to use them. This version is compiled from a slightly older but more accurate database ( April, 2018 ) and It contains UK only cameras. I've consolidated the cameras into four poi categories i.e. Fixed Speedcams, Average Speedcams, Variable Speedcams and Redlight Speedcams along with my preferred choice of icons for each one of them. Install them as I explained in my first post in this thread i.e. after extracting the zip file remember to place only the PersonalPOI folder and metainfo2.txt file onto your sd card and remember to select/tick the relevant poi categories and the poi audible warning alert after performing the update or they will not show on your map or alert you. I hope you find them helpful.

Well deserved credit goes to fellow forum member flumpie for sharing his script and know how which allowed me to use the Skoda My Destinations website to compile this POI collection.

Hi Bigade1

I have managed to load your latest version of Speed Cams (June 2018) onto a new Amundsen and all is working fine on major roads etc, however, there doesn't appear to be any Motorway Speed Cams is that correct?

As I have time left on my PGPSW subscription from a previous car (Nissan, no problems loading POI's on that car) I thought I would try using the Skoda portal to convert the files as per instructions and whilst it sent back, what was supposedly the correct files to load onto my unit, I keep getting an 'Error' message each and every time I try to update the software.

Your files appear to be the only ones which work but it would be good to have the Motorway cameras, perhaps they are there but not showing on my unit for some reason?

Your explanations and files are very much appreciated.

@MSkent,

Hi - I'm glad you find them useful.

With regards to your problem using the Skoda portal - I've given the reasons and solutions in my post situated three posts before yours, just scroll up.

With regards to the issue of no Motorway cameras - I freely admit to borrowing a third party database which to the best of my knowledge displays any static i.e. fixed gatso cameras if indeed there are any on the motorways. Perhaps there are none or the database does not cover it. I can say with certainty though that It certainly displays the average and variable speed cameras situated on different stretches of the M4 in South Wales. If you're referring to mobile cameras - I deliberately omit these from my compilation since unless I use a very up to date database and update my files on a very frequent basis they wouldn't really be very effective. Hope this helps.

Hi bigade1,

Yes, I had read your reasons why the Skoda portal doesn't work and I shall endeavour to see if I can correct the checksums in order to get the PGPSW database to work.

Regarding the motorway cameras I'm not sure what type are installed, however, I had the pleasure of driving halfway round the M25 and part way up the M1 the other day and the only camera that showed up on the map was the variable camera at the Dartford Crossing?

I'm due to drive the other way round the M25 and down the M3 shortly so I shall see if any cameras appear on the map then.

Many thanks for your input.

Thanks for posting this update... Works a treat.. and much better with the addition of those hidden ones on the M1!

@bigade1 Was wondering if you had an updated camera file for July. Was using POIbase as couldn't get the SMYdest working but thought I'd give it a go following your recent update and instructions. Sadly it seems like the Skoda Mydest portal is not working yet again so cant update my set.

@Keith64 - Glad you like it

@RoboOp - Yes I had the same problem. Thought I had the Skoda site all worked out but now I'm getting no sufficient space errors. The Skoda My Destination site really sucks - what a waste of time and effort! So meanwhile, I've compiled my July speedcams using the free limited version of POIBase and the aid of a SQlite db browser to enable the audible alerts ( which POIBase deliberately disables by default in the free version ) along with some python software ( thanks to flumpie for his fix  ) to correct the resulting incorrect checksums. There is a paid for stand alone programme out there available to use to compile the poi files called POInspect0r which has been tested by me and fellow forum member Welsh Boyo and it is quite capable of doing the task with a lot less hassle. Although it's a bit time consuming and a bit fiddly - I'm going to stick to the free methods for the time being.

Hi, sorry to bug you all, I have followed your instructions per d/ling the .zip and extracting etc, but it appears that my Amundsen unit just ignores the metainfo2.txt file … the unit reports software download, then simply displays the nav system again after a few seconds  ….

I have tried 2 different sd cards formatted in FAT Fat32 ExFAT etc … , tried in both sd slots, with nav card in either slot, even tried with the nav card taken out !!!  - where am I going wrong ?

Try the following. Make sure your nav card is in the sd2 card slot. Format the sd card you are going to use for updating the poi files to FAT32 and then open the PersonalPOI folder that you extracted from my download. You will then see three folders. Open the one named MIB2TSD which is specifically for the Amundsen MIB2 unit and only copy the PersonalPOI folder and metainfo2.txt file contained in there onto your sd card. Place the card into the sd1 slot and then put the car ignition on without the engine running. In the navigation menu go into the " Manage Memory " setting and import/update your poi files. You may have to click cancel and press update again if it takes more than a few seconds to find the update. If successful enable the relevant poi categories and the poi warning in their respective menu settings.

Hi Bigadel,

Tried that … still no joy !!!! - for your info, the sat nav s/w is revision 5e0051236 0072 ECE 2018 - when I select manage memory within nav setup, I only get 2 options … 'define home address' or 'delete user data' - no option to import/update poi's ...

the system also reports 'unable to read the release information file. Error when reading/opening the file \sdcard0\metainfo2.txt' ...

this is starting to drive me nuts !!!

would you have any further suggestions?

Regards

Ray Stanley.

I'm stumped a minute - just to check - does your unit have a cd player?

Hi Bigade1,

yes it does … in the glove compartment ...

  • Author

Ahh - that's the problem then. I created this specific thread for the MIB2 unit as that is the unit that I own and unfortunately. I think your unit must be an earlier MIB1 unit because it has a cd player. I have no experience of the MIB1 so I don't know whether you can update it with your own poi files or what method is used to do so. Sorry, :crying:

Hi Bigade1,

Well at least it's not me missing something !!!! Thanks for all your help with this … I will search about and see if anyone can give me any advice on updating this system ...

Once again, Thanks for all your help!!!

Regards

Ray.

Just a heads up to let everyone know that fellow Briskoda member " flumpie " has written a fantastic script which he's posted in the Skoda Superb MK III section of Briskoda which allows you to compile your own PersonalPOI files without having to use the Skoda site or any third party programme. It's totally free and it has been tested many times by myself. After getting familiar with it - It now literally takes me seconds to make a compilation. I'm well chuffed with it and would like to thank him publicly for the invaluable time and effort he has taken to compile this script and for the patience and guidance he has given to me showing me how to use it. Here's a link to his original post and don't forget to click the thanks button on his post if you find it useful:
