Care Connect - misrepresented?

Featured Replies

Think I'll probably do the same, since Android Auto lets you use Waze (my GPS app of choice) on the infotainment screen.

I'm not going to pay for it when it runs out. Google maps is my ideal stanav. "Hey google" voice for other stuff. Android Auto is for me. So I've bought a cheap 2nd hand android that I'm going to leave plugged in the car. This will give me data, maps, songs etc. I'll see how that goes.

Phone will cope better the more RAM it has. I went for the HTC m8 on ebay. ~50 as it had some scratches.

I love AA. I prefer its Material Design car interface. Carplay just seems to replicate a phone home screen. If you like GM, try Waze. It's now my favourite nav app. And of course, you can add destinations to the phone from wherever, in advance.

I don't know whether the USB socket is powered all the time. I think I'd be tempted not to have a phone on show (even a S/H scratched one) in case it tempts some scroat to smash a window for it.

I love the level of detail Waze drills down to. "Hazard, car stopped on the hard shoulder ahead" etc. Looking forward to getting the car and see how I can connect my Pixel2 XL. In our Yeti my old N6P had to go in the drawer behind the console via a right hand angle USB connector and a long USB A to C cable.

From the manual, it looks as if it is powered but I guess only when the ignition is on. I'm going to use the phone I use everyday Samsung S8 as I use GM and Waze for all journies. Especially the long ones to see family (over 300 miles). I've ordered a very short cable from Amazon as I'm not sure there is room to keep the cable plugged in with the cover closed over when I leave the car. When the car arrives I can test it out.

I'd love to see pics of that area J if you have a min when the car comes. My wife has an S8 and it's pretty close to mine size wise.

It's hopefully going to be delivered on Thursday (unless the weather has put back deliveries) so I'll report back then. I'd be interested in if the cover will close with it in the phone shelf and the cable plugged in. I suppose I could get a right angled connector for the cable as long as the phone fits.

I've read that Waze is better for longer trips and Google maps for local ones. I've always used Waze because it gave more info and speed limits until a trip last year where on 3 occasions it took me off the motorway (up the slip road) and down again, back onto the motorway for no reason. Also, a couple of weeks ago, the app kept stopping. Therefore, I've used GM. I like it for the lane indications. And also you can pre-download maps which is useful if you start from a part of the country with out a phone signal. When the car arrives I'll give Waze another try. Although the AA version doesn't show the speed limit.

Yeah, that's a good point, I thought there was a little pull over cover near the gearbox to put the phone away?

There is but I don't know how much room this is underneath it when it is closed.

There's not enough for un upright USB lead, not even sure if it would close with a right-angled one plugged in!

Ok. To be honest, I'm not too worried as I'm not doing too leave the phone in the car anyway. Also, by buying the very short USB cable, it's not a Jake taking it out with the phone either.

It does on mine janner. It's another reason why I prefer it over GM. Haven't got a screenshot on it tho, but it definitely does.

Thank you Michael. I was only going in reviews of read online. I've only used Waze once on AA and that was before Christmas. I'm guessing they updated the app since then. Back to Waze then.

Worth a go J. Although I'd make sure you have the latest versions of both the AA and Waze apps.

Got Mrs G to take a pic with Waze onscreen, showing speed limit. Bongs if exceeded.

Excellent. That's great to see. My car arrives today. I'll try it out myself.

Never mind Waze - enjoy the car!

Ours is on or waiting for a transporter to Emden. At least another 4 weeks I reckon.

You might want to give this a try, they give a free 7 day trial to see if you like it.

I have the non AA version installed on my Samsung S7, and use it for short journeys.

Today it detoured me around 3 miles of stop/start traffic on the M8, saving me at least 30 minutes.

Oh that's interesting. It uses Mirrorlink (so android only), which is included with Android Auto and Carplay in Skoda's Smartlink.

We'll have a go with the wife's S8. Unfortunately Mirrorlink won't work with my Pixel 2XL, last time I tried it. Looks like Google block it in favour of AA.

Thanks for the tip :)

  • 2 weeks later...

I've just bought  a 3 PAYG 4G Trio Data Sim Pack with 12GB of data from mymemory for £26.59 with discount code VC5, it lasts for 12 months so I thought it was worth a punt.

  • 1 month later...

Dont know if this had been answered before so apologies if it has, but i know on the kodiaq at least on models with the emergency button you get 14 years care connect free of charge and 1 year infotainment online( internet browsing etc) all cars that have smartlink enabled get that functionality for life foc.
