Bad luck and poor service at Skoda

Featured Replies

I am on my 3rd visit to skoda - two different dealerships to get creaking from the steering resolved and other isssues.

The first visit was was to my local garage - I purchased the car from Skoda dealer 3 hours away. Only after return home did I hear the creaking at slow speeds from the steering.

I then had had to wait 3 weeks for a diagnostic appointment. I was then told as my car is over 60000 would be a fee of £72 per hour then £90 something to diagnose fault - if covered by the warranty then I would not have to pay for that.

Feeling a little let down by this open cheque policy I contact the selling dealer and booked it in as was going on vacation that way - passing by.

They were here supposed to have he car from a Sunday to a Wednesday - in addition to the creaking it had

head unit kept freezing

Wind noise from front passenger door

Drivers door handle trim loose

ac not getting cold

small split on airbag cover - cosmetic.

they ended up having the car for 3 weeks due to parts delivery issues - I was initially told accident then traffic, then found out it was new logistics supplier.

Luckily i I had a cours why car that I put over 700 miles on whislt my car sat in their compound.

they fixed all the faults apart from airbag as was told was cosmetic and I thought all was well.

The creaking from the steering was resolved by a TPI stating to grease the cv boots.

Literally got got in the car and wanted to get home - this is where I went wrong - not checking for the creaking noise had gone.

Got it back home, following day and doing some slow manoeuvres - low and behold the creaking was still there.

So annoyed.

I booked it in on with my local dealer and hear I sit today - just  road tested with mechanic and didn’t get out of yard before he confirmed he could hear it.

The moral of my story and my advice is -

Unlikely many approved used at my mileage but I wouldn’t again purchase a Skoda approved used with more than 60000 - the anxiety of being spanked for diagnostic time is not nice feeling.

Don’t trust what they say and make sure you check if you can what they’ve done. I am not sure I could of done much different being 300 miles from home if I had checked it - drive back in the Fabia and waited again for them to fix it.

Notnsure if any any of the above helps anyone by i will update about my creaking when I know what’s what.

Good that your car is going to a local Skoda Approved Repairer / Dealership for your Warranty Work since it has a Skoda Warranty as a Skoda Approved Used Car.

As you say if it is a Warranty issue there is the refund on the diagnostic time f there is Approval for that Warranty work, and with a TPI on the issue that is not really in doubt?

Skoda Approved Used cars are no guarantee of the quality of the Inspections before hand over to new owners.

There can be workshop checks on safety matters and yet no guarantee that Full Main Dealer Service History has things carried out to Manufacturers Guidelines with things like, DSG, Haldex, Brake Fluid changes.

VW Group do have a Logistics Issue with Suppliers and Deliveries.

The punted their Major Supplier because that Supplier was as sick of VW Group as many customers are.

Thanks for the reply.

Now im home I am going to spend €7 and go on Erwin to see what I can find - TPI’s plus I want to download some repair guides, servicing information for my car.

Should have down it before but going into Skoda looking smart with a handful of printouts maybe not the best first approach.

To be updated.

I bought approved used with 15k on and had a few niggly issues. I also found the Approved Used Warranty a bit lacking, though I suspect that was partly down to my local dealer and their unwillingness to even attempt to claim on warranty for certain issues. Skoda UK weren't much help either.

Hope you manage to get everything sorted.

I just got my car back from Reading Skoda after I had a steering creak resolved under warranty (65 plate, 33k on the clock).

I too was warned of the diagnostic charge if the issue was not deemed to be covered by the warranty, so I did a lot of research beforehand and self-diagnosed it as a faulty top mount bearing.  I sat in the car with a technician before I left the dealership to reproduce the problem.  All I had to do was slowly apply steering lock whilst pulling out of (or into) a parking space which causes a groan/creak sound from the front of the car, which the technician confirmed he could hear and said he'd had a few in beforehand with the same issue.

The OSF top mount was replaced free of charge (actual cost £217.06) and I confirmed before leaving with my car that the creaking noise was gone - hoorah!  Can't fault Skoda Reading service department.  My experience was great!

Maybe the top mount is your issue too?

I have been been reading about top mount issues - they initially thought it was the cv boot - magic! greased it up to no avail (sarcasm)

the technician I went out with has been there for at least 3 years I know of so I’m hoping it’s money for old rope.

Was it both top mounts or which side??

thanks for reply.

Ryan

@Rybu79 they replaced the OSF front top mount only (driver's side).  I would've preferred both, but they wouldn't entertain that suggestion sadly.

My steering also creaks at low speed when on hard lock to the right. When it went into Skoda for the 80k service they couldn’t find anything wrong with it, but I didn’t ask them to start taking it apart, only look while they were there. I suspect the top mount on mine is going, but I’ll also be on Erwin downloading TPI’s before next month when it goes back to Skoda for the cambelt and MoT. I don’t expect they’ll be interested in knocking too much money off even when I ask nicely, but I have to defend my local dealer; even though the sales side was not so good, the service side are brilliant and the amount of things that they have done for me for free or heavily discounted is impressive. As my car has 91k miles on it, I’m waiting for the old wear and tear line but that’s probably fair enough.

Do please update us once you find the cause of the steering noise :)

Exactly the same at Reading Skoda!  Sales were terrible, but the service team were fantastic.  Odd that you've experience the same thing!

Yes, Sytner Skoda North Wales have looked after me well with the Octy and the Citigo in terms of servicing, even making the first service on the Citigo free because of the issues I was having with sales (11 months after taking delivery!!). I also seem to get generous discounts on services generally which is good news when the Octy needs servicing twice a year. I used to service all my cars myself but the 2 Skoda’s are so new that they can do it. I get a nice new courtesy car to drive and the prices they charge are less then many independent garages locally so I’m happy.

I’ll wait to pass judgement - past experience is an indicator of future performance I feel.

Just want to enjoy my car without any niggles.

Well the update is they believe it to be shock covers and there’s a tpi.

Its not not covered by used car warranty and I’ve been landed with an hours diagnostics costs - had to pay to get my car back.

Rang original selling dealership - shocking btw-  call me back Tuesday.

I said I want it fixed and £75 reimbursing.

Complaint email being lodged over the weekend detailing all the goings on  since May!!

Till Tuesday for an update

Ryan

My VRS has had creaking steering since I’ve had it from new. When it was raised st the first service, grease was put on the CV boot. Didn’t help. I now live with it.

How can grease on the CV boot do anything? Usually MOT fails any CV boot that has grease on it, assuming it is split.

I assume they meant in the boot. If a CV has been running dry, isn't it borked anyway and should be changed?

That was my question. The noise is clearly mechanical but maybe they felt it might do something helpful!

Hi, can I ask who you spoke to at Reading for this? My car is booked in with them for its third service and I too suffer with creaking when going lock to lock at slow speeds.

Thanks

Sure!  The service advisor was Amy, and the technician was Adam.  Good luck!
