Removing Fabia badge - damaged clear coat?

Featured Replies

Just taken off the rear fabia badge but it's left an outline, at first I thought it was residue but it won't buff out. Looking closely it looks as if the clear coat has been damaged.

Anyone had a similar issue or know of a fix?

yes thats common, happened on both my silver and black fabs, respray is only way around it

Welcome.

Unless you have had the car from new and know the full history the Boot could be a replacement, a repair, respray or whatever.

You are going to have to cut back the lacquer and lacquer again or tidy up the edges and put lettering back on probably.

You only buffed the spot with a cloth? I advise you to start cleaning the spot bij claying, it that doesn't solve the problem you have to use a paint cleaner of a fine polish, and I guess the chance that this wil solve your problem is over 90%.

To get some idea about claying: YouTube link.

Polishing.

im telling you it wont come out as its gone through the lacquer. Mine was exactly the same no amount of polishing will sort that. You can see the lacquer has cracked and chipped off.

Im not being pessimistic, i just know you wont be able to resolve that from experience

Guess the lettering goes back on! Thanks for the help

yep thats the best way of resolving it!

It's impossible to tell if the lacquer is damaged or not from a photo. Best way is to feel if there's something on top of the paint, or there is some material of top layer of paint removed with the lettering.

By the way, a scratch in paint, is also material which is removed by force, and in many cases you can make a scratch invible, or almost invisible by polishing with the right materials. You probably need rough polishing, but it not so different from a scratch or paint damage by bird ****.

Can you not see from the bottom photo the lacquer is chipped? looks pretty obvious to me at the bottom of the letter B

I can't tell from the photo if there's something on top of the lacquer, or there's some lacquer missing. In real life a can see a lot, even very tiny things, but not from a photo.

(several times colleagues get frustrated about that, for example a colleague made a thin film layer which was intended to be 40 nm thick (1000 nm = 1 micron), just by looking I told him it was between 60 and 70 nm thick, after an hour of measuring it turned out to be 67 nm thick)

Use brake cleaner and some kitchen roll. Looks like glue residue.

Lacquer is damaged, it's the same as on mine. Unfortunately my A broke when removing it so a little coating of soot helps hide it :D

You can clearly see the lacquer below the B is damaged.

That's what it was like when I first took it off, a decent polish helped it but it's almost like the dirt around the badges eats in to the lacquer.

Defo chipped, running thumb nail over and it's very obvious. Tbh it doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would, from a distance it looks fine

Mine was exactly the same on my black vrs. Re-fitted the letters with some double sided tape and then sprayed them black with plastidip. Looks way better than the unsightly chrome. Oh yeah, re-fitting the lettering is obviously a doddle as you can see exactly where they used to be

I like the ''unsightly chrome''.
