Skoda Octavia VRS 2.0TDI (CUPA EA288) high oil consumption

Featured Replies

That's just WOW.. in a bad sense. Have you tried changing the oil brand? Does your car do lots of dpf regens? Mine used to drink up about 1L/1000km when it had the DPF clogged and it was on a different brand of oil.

Also, Is there any sign of blue smoke ?

Is there any noticeable oil on the plastic shield?

I ordered new  - Head gasket - Head bolts - Head module bolts (18pcs) - piston rings - conrod bearings + bolts - main bearings + bolts - thrust bearings - crank

  • Finally found what was causing high oil consumption for my VRS, please see attached picture, this how piston one looked for car with millage 160K. And one more thing, don't do long service intervals,

I'm using quantum 5w30. Was thinking of trying ravenol but I think that it would take too much nevertheless.

Dpf was clogged and doing regens all the time so had it removed.

When engine is cold there's sometimes some light smoke but could be just condensation... When I'm accelerating and revs are high then there's lots of greyish / blue smoke - I assume it's burning oil.

No oil on plastic shield.

I'm running the Ravenol VMP, so it probably won't help you much either.

I'm going to call the mechanic and will see what he says. But propably as we said the engine will have to be disassembled. Will update the topic after that.

a small update  ...
I cleaned the dpf from oil residues and since then I have crossed 2000 km most of the highway and maybe 1% km in the city.  I did not notice that the regeneration was on, which used to be the case every 30-40 km, so it seems that this problem has been solved, at least for now.

I thought it was a frequent regeneration and maybe an oil consumption problem but it doesn't seem to be.  at the last change I put "Eneos"according to the specification 507.00 but when I calculate the oil consumption  is 0.3 L per 1000 km.  PreviouS i used the S tronic 5w 30 and it seems to me that the consumption was a bit lower.  mileage is 90% highway at an engine speed of 2300 -3000 rpm.  I'm thinking of trying a different gradation 5w40 and see if the consumption will decrease but I'm not sure because it's not according to the specification 504.00 or 507.00 so as not to make a problem with the dp filter again.  what is your opinion

@Srkigtd 5w30 oils meeting 504/507 spec are low SAPS oils, but the 5w40 are usually mid- or full-SAPS oils. Meaning that with the same oil consumption the DPF will regenerate more often and accumulate more ash with 5w40.

Stick to the 5w30 if you want to keep that DPF for a bit longer. Try some full synthetic oil with PAOs and/or esters like Millers, Ravenol, Amsoil, Rowe or something like. At least you'll know that the engine is better protected. The oil consumption won't decrease..

IMO with your oil consumption you can change your oil every 20k km if you use a good oil brand. You add enough additives with the fresh oil which you're topping every 1000km. If the oil filter wasn't at the bottom of the engine, I would I would still change it every 10k km. That's what I do with my thirsty 1.9 tdi.. :) But the filter there is on top.

thanks for your reply.  I am interested if we ignore the question about dpf, whether 5w40 oil can damage the engine and may not lubricate all parts well.

@Srkigtd It would not damage your engine by using 5w40 oil although it would damage your dpf though if you have one equipped to your vehicle. So wouldn't recommend 5w40 with a dpf.

Some news?

Well actually in mine skoda as well as Bogdan's, there was oil in crankcase breather hose indicating faulty PCV valve membrane. I've replaced mine a few days ago and for now it looks like it's clean. He has some pictures so he can post it.

Did you have to replace the whole cylinder head cover or just the valve itself?

You do know that will be a MOT Failure (if you are in the UK).....

If I would be in UK then from what I know it would still pass because there's only a visual inspection and not diesel particles test

Just the valve itself worked, but I need to replace the whole cover anyway because it has a crack.

Have you the part number for the valve please?

There's no official part number for that one:)

But you can buy it on ebay. I've ordered that one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/133767512180 but it was different to what was inside. The one inside looked like that one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/133727586122

I am replacing the whole rocker cover so wasn't too much worried about the fit.

@eacaee you changed the pcv valve? Has this cured the oil consumption issue?

I've changed it and crankcase breather still has very minor vapour (but I think that's due to the fact the membrane I've installed is different). The old one was not 'curved' in shape, but with a sharp angle, it was worn out. And there was PLENTY of oil in crankcase.

So it did help. But the other thing is that my rocker cover is cracked and I have to replace it anyway.

This is how it looked like when taking out the pipe that goes from pcv to the intake. This is probably the easiest "test" to do.

Thank you. I have just had a look at the cover. I take it the cover for the diaphragm just unclips?

Yes, but you are probably going to take out one of the injectors to make some space, by the looks of it.

Indeed, the last injector has to go out along with two high pressure fuel pipes. For them the torque is 28Nm, for the injectors bolt it's 8Nm +270 degrees. It's advised to put new o-rings and copper plate on the injector too, the part number is elring 883.700 . To be honest I didn't do it on mine, but I will order them when I will be replacing the cover. Hope this helps!

Just checked my intake to pcv pipe and it was bone dry.

This means you're lucky ( or not?? 😂 😂 Might be something way more expensive).

some info about oil consumption.  has pcv valve replacement reduced oil consumption?  mine still consumes 1l on about 2400km most of the highway.  otherwise what is your oil temperature?

Oil temperature is usually between 97 to 105. When driving hard it gets to around 110-113.

I will also be replacing the valve diaphragm this week and will update the post after driving at least 1000km.
