Aren't those Porsche pictures just mock ups in CGI? or are they going to be real things?

I don't actually know, but some NASCAR Cup competitors used life-size photos of their cars as sign-writing on their trailers, so they could be "real things", and I think Porsche AG still own examples of both cars, so it could be a glass panel.

The pictures certainly don't look real. Although they would be impressive if they build the things :)

It will be impressive when VW get a selection of Electric Vehicles with WLTP Approval selling around the globe.

Even a full model range of Petrol, Diesel & Hybrids that can be ordered and built and with customers.

And many of those electric vehicles will be very low emissions simply because they will be stuck in a queue waiting for a working charge point to become available.

No idea, as they are not coming anytime soon in any numbers.

Queues at Diesel pumps should be getting shorter though.

As long as VW don't say their electric cars are powered by AA batteries, but are found to have really put AAA ones in instead!!!!

We wait to see if we still can with a 1.5 TSI EVO or 1.0 TSI with a GPF (Otto Particulate Filter).

Should be able to with a tail wind, empty car and 70 PSI in the tyres.

Superb 280 loses 4bhp and Golf R loses 10bhp with a GPF fitted. This is called PROGRESS.:D

I suspect that it is not only Honda that have had to think again about Plug in Hybrids for the UK.

Maybe other Countries Governments & Authorities will be considering seriously if 'Hybrids' are really benefiting the environment if it just means still fat cars on the roads which use as much or more petrol than petrol cars or even use more fuel / energy & pollute more than the most modern diesels..

Saw an advert for a self charging hybrid the other day.

WTF is the point. It's a closed system. It can only charge the battery by running the engine. The battery plus generator  increases weight so this car will almost certainly use more fuel than if it had just had the petrol engine.

Or it might not use fuel for the first 2mi or it might be more flexible with power but without it being plugged in it must use the petrol engine to charge that battery.

But the advert made the damn thing sound like the battery charged with air and good thoughts.

I guess so when you're in city commuter traffic you run on battery power, but when you get out of the densely populated bit where the fumes matter, you go to 'real fuel'?

It is a bit non intuitive I agree, however, I think these, like the toyota hybrids, switch seamlessly over to electric power at urban speeds, where combustion engines are at their lowest efficiency, and also allow Atkinson type engines, i.e. significantly higher efficiency engine technology that on their own wouldn't cope with the range of use.

So its about optimised use of engine power. And of course emissions in the urban environment.

It doesn't give any advantage however if you are purely a motorway cruiser, apart from tax advantages.

It also allows recovery of energy during deceleration (through regenerative braking) that's otherwise lost as heat in the brakes of a conventional drivetrain.

Running on the battery in town and then using fuel when needed out of polluted or congested areas is perfect.

Point is it has been found the Business's and Fleets and individuals just took the Tax Break, got Plug In Hybrids got into Congestion Charge Areas and Free Parking and hogged Charging Places and were not Charging and not 'Plugging in' and quite possible never Running on Electricity.

But then thats the sort of Kidology that Plug in Hybrids allowed and seemed to be an improvement on Emissions Testing Kidology.

?

How are VW Group getting on with MY19 Hybrids, are the order books open, cars available and getting delivered?

These and ones with these drivetrains / propulsion should be selling in their millions.

Only problem is the Elephant in the room,  batteries or lack of, and actual practicality and range and emissions.

I'm sure this is wise marketing on their part.

Many will feel they're getting more 'goodness', rather than less; despite the obvious problems of increased mass and complexity (future cost).

Many others will see it as a way of avoiding emissions-zone charges, primarily, with no care for the environment one way or the other.

It was September 2015 that VW Group were exposed and still they get away with taking the pith.

The German Government & Authorities are very good at spinning things out for years.

I think Tesla use 18650 batteries which are very like an AA battery.

See here:- https://evannex.com/blogs/news/understanding-teslas-lithium-ion-batteries

Tesla has been using 18650 cells manufactured by Panasonic in Asia in the Models S and X cars since 2013.  These are small battery cells, slightly larger than the standard AA cells.

Thanks AG Falco

Somewhat relevant to this thread: https://www.thechemicalengineer.com/news/a-catalyst-for-greener-hydrogen-production/

I think it's likely in the near future that batteries will be dropped in favour of hydrogen fuel cells, especially with advances like this one making it cheaper and cleaner to produce hydrogen. The most likely concept for the vehicle would be fuel cell for main energy needs with a battery and/or supercapacitor to recover energy during braking and descents.

“Demand for middle distillates is rising and it seems that shipping is taking more diesel out of the passenger vehicle market -- generally pushing diesel prices higher,” said Salih Yilmaz, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. “On the refining side, the run to create more diesel is resulting in more gasoline too, creating a glut and pressuring gasoline prices.”

So new regs on marine diesel coming into effect by end of this year, pushing diesel prices higher and side effect of lowering petrol price!

Its not just shipping taking the diesel though. As you say xman, new marine fuel regs... finally.. given the recent massive surge in cruise operations, it alone is an industry that needs to clean itself up alot..
