Infotainment retrofitting

Recommended Posts

I'm sorry if this is too ridiculous a question - but am I right in saying the MIB2 units have white backlights behind the buttons as opposed to the green on the MIB1 that matches the rest of the interior of that year's model?

It's the only reason I'm sticking with my MIB1 columbus.

Hello all

Very good info here. I want just to confirm what head unit I need to replace mine.

If I am correct, I will need  3V0919606 PFL 8 inch Columbus or 3V0919605D FL 8 inch Amundsen.

Is this correct? And this should be plug and play?

Also, how do I know if I have MIB or MIB2?

Thank you

Hi @pab567and @SashaGracegreat information thank you!

I just wanted to double check, I have just bought my second Octavia (MkIII 1.6TDI estate, 2015) and I have the Amundsen MY16 with DAB, part number 5Q0035874A.  Could anyone confirm which new screen I can use that can use Apple CarPlay?  And whether it is simply a case of switching out the screens?  From the OP it looks as though there might be some limitation with the Amundsen MY16.  There is a smart link option in my menu but it has to be activated by the dealer - might be nice to have a new screen though if it's a simple enough task!

Thanks all

@nori you have Amundsen MIB2 MY16, non-DAB. You can use any of screens you mentioned (3V0919606, 3V0919605D), they are P&P, just note in case of 3V0919605D you will get a little space between the display and the trims.

@SimmoWhale you can you 5E0919606, 5E0919605M (with NAV button), 5E0919605N (without NAV button). Apple CarPlay is NOT screen-dependent, it depends on the glove box unit - yours supports it as long as SmartLink is activated.

@pab567 ah I see thank you.  So I need to get SmartLink activated either way.  So the simplest option would be to just have SmartLink activated (presumably at a dealer?) and then I would have CarPlay on my current system?

Thank you very much for replying so quickly!

I changed from the MIB1 to the MIB2, bought mine from Pub567, and If anybody looking to update, I´m sure they others highly skilled, but I have to say, Pub its a great guy, the price was same as ebay, but the item was in mint condition, great communication, and he programmed the unit jus as I asked him with all the protection removed.,  And with all function activated. So if you look to update, Pub is your guy.

Thanks again Pub.

p.s. the screen protector, you can get it from Amazon, I bought mine from aliexpress

Just received mine and installed it, super happy about it. There is a small gap behind the screen at the top, but you wont notice. Also you need radio removal tool.

Thank you pab567 for the info.

Hello everyone,

Not sure if it's the right place to post this, so I apologize if I did something wrong, but I have some real issues with my unit. It's a 5Q0035864C, on an Octavia 2018.

At some point, out of the blue, the unit was restarting every 3 minutes or so. Any modifications made on the settings menu (including a factory reset) during those 3 minutes were lost after restart. I went to the dealership and they tried to update the firmware but the unit kept restarting so they suggested replacing the whole unit on my expense. Which I kindly refused due to the high cost, evidently.

Now, I found a 3rd party guy that tried fixing it, but it got an error while trying to rewrite the emmc at about 2% in, so he suggested that the emmc might be broken and needs to be replaced. He ordered an emmc bga100 but the problem persists. He cannot upload the software. Aaand....I'm stuck.

If any of you guys, have an ideea on what to try further, I'll gladly appreciate it!

Thank you!

Hi

first suggestion would be take it back to Skoda dealer and point out that you have statutory rights and they apply to cars too.

under the consumer rights act goods have to be of merchantable quality and last as long as a reasonable person would expect them to last having regard to their price and nature. This applies to parts of cars not just the whole.

goven what satnav media units cost (to replace a reasonable person would expect them to last the full 6 years of these rights.

therefore Skoda can’t blank you on this.

if the dealer refuses ask them to refer it to Skoda UK who should know your rights. If bot get trading standards involved.

technically under the act you might get charged a portion of the repair costs based on you having had the use of the part for say three years (based on it being a 2018 car) but surprisingly most companies don’t know the act well enough to realise this and replace for free when pushed!

good luck whatever you try!

Thank you,

The car was bought second hand from Germany and I live in Romania. I'm not sure if such a law exist here. The car is out of warranty. Thing is, I wanted it to get repaired at the dealers (for a price, of course), not replaced. This kind of solution I could have given myself without being a Skoda engineer. ;)

Now, I need to know if anyone has encounter this kind of problem and if a possible solution might exists, or I'll just have to dig a bit deeper and get a new unit. I haven't found anything on internet so far.

Hi,

I have a Skoda Octavia Mk3 (VIN=TMBBC7NE1Exxxxxxx=MY2014 I believe), originally with Columbus MIB1 system but decided to get a retrofit MIB2 system from VAGTEC in 2018.

Ever since I had the retrofit though, CarPlay doesn't always connect first time. When the VAGTEC fitter demonstrated the functionality after completing the installation, CarPlay connected first time every time, but mine didn't. So I started to Google for possible causes, checking possible causes such as cables, network settings on my iPhone, the apps installed but everything I did including resetting my iPhone never resolved the issue for me. I lived with it, as although it was annoying, it did work most of the time, eventually, sometimes after setting off. and sometimes resetting (pressing off button for 10 secs) . In December 2020 I thought getting the firmware updated may help. So shipped the head unit to VAGTEC for an update. System was upgraded from 0848 to 1433 as per the screenshots below. Alas, issue persisted. Although the phone mostly connects, I occasionally see the errors in the other screenshots below i.e. Error: USB 1 or Error: USB 2 or get as far as the 'Available Devices' screen but not to CarPlay. Selecting Apple CarPlay from the available devices list usually results in CarPlay working, but not always and not always on the first attempt either. One other observation is that even though CarPlay doesn't connect first time every time, the connection does generally provide power for charging i.e. the iPhone charges but sometimes this is intermittent too.

I get the same experience with an iPhone 7, iPhone 8 or iPhone SE and this has been happening with the various versions of iOS since Aug 2018. I'm also using genuine Apple cable and have tried other MFi cables too. Have also factory reset from the menu option in the head unit.

Has anyone seen these errors before or knows what causes them? I'm inclined to think the USB port (part # 5Q0035726E), which was changed from the original USB port when the MIB2 unit was first installed, needs changing once more. Either that or I've got a duff head unit.

Welcome your thoughts and ideas.

Took the plunge and got a new USB port. Got the USB port from my local Skoda dealer. Got the screen removal keys (toolkit from Amazon as I thought I may have needed some of them) and et voila, all working as it should have done from day 1 of the retrofit for me!

Removal took a couple of hours as I didn't want to break anything and use too much force. Putting it all back together again took 5 mins! So really, once you know what you are doing, this is probably a 15 mins job

Looking at the part number of the old and new port, I notice the new one is a newer hardware version number too, 006 instead of 005. Not sure how much of a difference that has made, but it's all working now, first time every time, so far anyway! Next step is to make it wireless, as @Soren1984 has done using https://re-stream.se/product/wireless-carplay-dongle/ in his post

Reference documents and YouTube videos I found helpful

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFKcHsgY5jk - swapping to an Android unit
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7SYzkHiEaQ -swapping the USB port but is a series of stills rather than a video, but still helpful.

Hi guys, I think this is a hot topic, but I’ve just bought a 2014 Octavia with the Amundsen (MIB1 I believe) head unit and I really want to upgrade to CarPlay. Can anyone direct me where I can can get whatever I need and have it fitted? I’m in Hull, East Yorkshire but can travel.
Thanks in advance. 😊

I have a Amundsen MiB2 (which I am thinking about replacing for a Columbus screen )

My system doesn’t currently have the Smartlink activated (I believe it’s a dealer set up @160 quid)

My question is would I need to replace the screen before I update or would it not make a difference which way round I did it. Basically rather not pay the dealer twice

Cheers
