Any one fit a exide battery

Featured Replies

As above

is that a question of can somebody fit one for you, or whether someone has that brand of battery fitted to their car?

I wouldn't have thought it would be an issue as long as it is replaced like for like (type and rating) and the system is then coded correctly.

So long as the battery is either an EFB or AGM type (i.e. compatible with the start/stop system) and of sufficient capacity (Ah) & cold start current (CCA), plus the Battery Management System is correctly coded then there's no need to fit any particular manufacturer of battery.

I fitted a Halfords AGM battery in mine when I needed a new one, 4 year guarantee and got a good discount with my trade card.

You should get the system coded to say it has a new battery as if the values are marginally different you can change it, I.e if it's slightly higher amp/hour

On the Octavia III the battery management system is  sub-system of the BCM at address #9 - open that and then with VCDS use the long coding helper.

That is only for original battery mine is Varta silver dynamic agm

Not true, you can set any battery type and capacity - if you're not sure how to then ask Ross-Tech for details (they will need a VCDS Auto-Scan)

Anyone have views on Exide batteries? How are they as a brand? How are their batteries?

Not heard of them for 40 years. Maybe just a brand name nowadays.

Which goes to prove @gregoir has been living in a hole for 40 years..😉

Exide is over a century old premium battery manufacturer, invented AGM and EFB battery technology. OE fitment on my 2018 Superb (EFB)

Doesn't say much about them then. The OE fitment Moll EFB on my Octy from new was the most useless thing I've seen fitted for a long time. Didn't make it through warranty. Didn't dare try claim on it for fear of getting another one.

Best move I made, binning it. Starts better on the new battery after 12 months than it ever did on the OE fitment.

Telling is the fact that Varta are one of the manufacturers listed in the BCM

Am I right in thinking, then, that I can't just pull out the old battery and fit a new one without having to involve coding?

Interesting, my battery goes flat in under 15min of ignition on. Also found the key battery only lasts 12months

Yes, if you don't at least change the battery serial number the BMS will assume you have the old (knackered) battery and start disabling some heavy electrical loads.

Sounds like it's not holding charge like it should - worth changing it before Winter really arrives IMHO.

Do you have any examples to back that statement up?

I swapped my battery in July, fitted a E39 Varta Start-Stop Plus 096 AGM Car Battery 12V 70Ah (570901076), bought from Tayna Batteries website.

No coding changed whatsoever and all my electrical consumer systems work exactly as before. No service faults showing up either. So as far as I can see it's 100% "plug & play".

Interesting.  No issues with the radio code, then?  Hope not as I can't find my code!!  I was planning using a spare slave battery hooked up to the main battery leads on the harness to maintain current to the system, but if I don't have to do that,,,

You won’t get issues with the radio code but you do need to recode the BMS when you fit a new battery, even if the replacement is exactly the same as the original you at least need to change the serial number so the system knows a new battery has been fitted.

See my post above. New AGM Varta battery replaced the original EFB one. No recoding of serial number, or type  done, no issues apparent. Start/stop works when it had stopped with the old one. No radio code; lighting; Aircon; power steering etc etc issues.

No issues apparent, but there will be if you haven’t coded the new battery. Especially since you changed from EFB to AGM.

Its not just disabling heavy load systems the charging system needs to know what type of battery, amp and age it is .
As it is a complex charging system on these cars now

Its not just an alternator pushing out charge all the time like cars of old

EFB and AGM need different charging

As above Code it correctly for NO issues

As above, The BCM adapts its charging to an ageing battery, only way to reset it is to do the coding. it will be charging at the wrong rate to the wrong level. It will stop charging at the reduced max capacity of a knackered EFB.

Lets see how long the Varta AGM will last doing that

That's why modern smart chargers have an AGM setting
