Is this bag of trouble easily located in the bottle, couple of months ago I had a fish round but couldn't find it after alarm bells rang finding it marked MIT Silikat.

Yes Ben, dead easy (well it was for me).  Stuck my finger in and could feel it straight away.  The feint line at the end of the arrow is the top edge of the bag:

This is on my Golf GTI, and I have to say I feel a bit conflicted.  My car's still under warranty, so I could potentially affect it if I remove the bag.  Other reports (as we've also seen on here) are that the matrix getting blocked can be sand from casting the cylinder head.  I think I'll discuss it with my local VW before deciding what to do.

I have a 2015 built late 14 scout duel climate control 2.0 tdi and it has the silica seams to be no rhyme or reason to the presence or lack of the silica in the tank

My 2015 vRS had a silica bag:

The new expansion tank has turned up safely, so mine will get swapped out shortly.  Not worth taking the gamble for £20 or thereabouts.

I was slightly concerned that the fixings might be different, but, no, all exactly as the original

My Tsi vrs is the same, MY2015 built late 2014. It has the writing and the bag, not for long though new bottle will be on once the weather is better. No point taking the chance especially out of warranty

Have spoken to a neighbour who has a newish GTI Golf...his local dealer apparently removes the silica bag from all cars fitted with them as a matter of course .

Do you know the part number that was on your new one should be on the docket

8MA 376 702-464  Postage and VAT brought it to £21.20

If you're looking for the Skoda part number it's 5Q0 121 407 M.

Thanks was looking for the revision letter that that non silica starts at Allan is your car 2.00 tdi

Mines is a 2.0 Tsi but I think it's the same bottle for both.

  • 1 month later...

This worries me greatly.

Is it just a case of swapping out the tank? Can the bag be removed and the original tank put back on or is there a reason why it must be a whole new unit?

Thanks

EDIT: I went and took a look at the tank - it's full so it makes it much harder to look into, even with a torch, but I can't make out the bag. Is it very small?

You can remove the bag, I just replaced the tank as I didn't want to risk tearing or damaging the bag. To replace the tank I just removed the coolant then disconnected the two hoses and two clips. Swapped the tank over reconnected the hoses and topped the coolant back up with new coolant. It took  less than 20 minutes

I have a Scout 1.8 TSI made in June 2015. The expansion tank has "Mit Silikat" sign on it. However, I cannot locate the bag with silica in the tank. Please see the video attached. I was wondering if anybody can clarify what different versions of the tank are out there. My thank appears to be double walled. The inner chamber is quite small and there is no way the bag that was pulled out in Youtube video (further up in the thread) would fit in this small space. The outer chamber cannot be accessed from the inner chamber and the silica bag might be in there. Is this the standard design of "Mit Silikat" tank? Or, is this something newer? Is it perhaps, that this setup is 'safer" than the single chamber tank (with the bag placed on the bottom as in the video referenced above)? I would like to get rid of the tank only if it isn't safe. Any help will be appreciated.

Just popped out and removed the silicon bag from the expansion tank. Very easy to do and took less than 5 mins.

I cannot find it or I don't know what to look for. Where was the bag positioned in the tank?

This is what I think is in my car. How do you remove the silicate from its container? There is no bag that I can see. I don's like the colour of the coolant in my car.  It is not pink, more like brownish/reddish.

This design is new to me. When I checked my tank which was labelled mit Silikat l couldn't find any bag. Presuming it had been removed earlier I'll have to check out for this tank design.
