Cajalajo. I can understand you're confusion and also the VAG community in general, so many theories on different forums.

I'm pretty sure I have the built in silikat supply expansion vessel although not certain how it is contained. You I'm sure have the same.

My vehicle is still under warranty and am reluctant to mess around with changing things. I can't find any reference to this type of expansion vessel failing causing what the bag type is responsible for. 

You have no problems at the moment I understand, I have mentioned to you about replacement of the G13. You will have to decide to replace the silikat free expansion vessel that are available.

What now confuses me is the absence of the MIT silikat writing on the vessels of later vehicles. What has changed.

Friend of mine recently took delivery of brand new Octavia VRS TSI. I will check what is under his bonnet as soon as I get a chance.

My Octavia is 4 months old and has an expansion tank with no label and does not have bag.

A neighbour has a 6 month old GTI Golf which had a bag but French VW dealer removed it because of problems they had had with clogged cooling system.

He was told they were removing all bags as a matter of course.

This is positive news. I shall contact  Skoda dealer about my built in silikat vessel on this basis.

Great info thank you. Benterrier's and my car do not have a bag but some entirely different silicate delivery system. That is the mystery we are trying to solve. Whether or not this system is prone to failure (one that the bag is infamous for).

Interesting stuff my expansion bottle has coolant thats gone a really dirty brown and after 8 miles the heater isnt warm (and no fans come on when set to high and auto )  never gets hot inside the car...

 

Cars going in tomorrow under warranty and the dealer claims to have never heard of the silica bags or bottles (beadles southend)   .

 

Car has the stamp that suggests silica  its a 2016 scout diesel .

 

I feel a heated discusion coming on ...

After reading how easy it is to take out the "silikat" bag, I have just taken mine out. A few minutes using nothing but fingers, bit fiddly but easy enough.

 

Saves on the cost of failure I suppose.

Have you checked for a bag and if so is it ok or bust

I think I need to change the tank ASAP. As I stated, there is no bag, the tank has "Mit Silikat" stamp and the coolant is no longer purple. I have nothing to take out and my only option appears to be brand new tank installation followed by coolant change. The heater still works. The question is why is Skoda allowed to get away with this. I am out of warranty but the car has only 40,000km on the clock. This issue and Haldex pump clogging and failing on 4x4 cars, are major manufacturing defects on this car.

So when people are removing the bags (be it Skoda or DIY), what's the recommended coolant change interval?  Given that it's only in theory good for life if it has the bag....

Not Visible, you say your coolant is very dirty, have a fish round with a blunt pencil or similar, it my be hiding in the depths!

no bag mate  nothing at all even remnants ..

HOW LONG DO YOUR CARS TAKE TO REACH 90 AND DO THE HEATER FANS COME ON IF THE HEATER IS SET TO AUTO

Is there a VAG Tech on here that can confirm it is only the tanks with a bag that are the potential problem and that the dual wall 'mit silicat' tanks are burst proof so have no danger of clogging the heating system

The term dual wall, not sure about this. I have a MIT silikat vessel on my car but wouldn't describe it that way. Unless you're referring to the bit inside holding the later silikat holder.

Yes, my understanding is that there are tanks with a 'free floating' bag in them and this type which has a semi dual wall and captive silicon, perhaps I misunderstood but I thought this later type could not cause the problem.

Yes the silikat container certainly has a better chance of staying in tact than the bag.

My tank had the little walled compartment, which made it an absolute pig to get out. 

The way I look at it is the new tanks don't have the bag or the container for the Silikat so it must have been removed for a reason. From what I have seen the tank with the container was fitted first then switched to the bag type, only vw group will know the reason why the change was made whether it's down to failure or cost. For me even though I had the tank with the container it's not worth me taking the chance of a failure especially out of warranty. 

Interested to hear your comments about which came first, the tank with the container followed by the bag type. I would have thought the other way round.

my car is a  MY2015 Tsi vrs and it had the tank with the container most of the people posting here have newer cars with the bag in the tank.  The newest tank supplied by skoda doesn't have the container or the bag. 

All makes it very confusing, mine My2018 TDI with container type.

My Octavia was built 11.08.2019 and does not have a bag .
