DSG Box or Engine/Electrical issue??

Featured Replies

Hi everyone!

I have hopped in & out of different posts on our forum but still i'm really struggling with my current issue & where to turn next?? Had lots of advice from my last post too but this is from a new angle.

My current intermittent issue relates to gear change which I had linked to my engine not running right but since coil pack change & new plugs motor wise running with a bit more punch now however........

This happens once a week or so in all types of driving conditions wet, dry, cold, long & short journeys. When pulling away it will go to change from 2nd to 3rd & my only way to describe what it does is like someone hit the brakes car lurches forward then shortly after like a boost of power gear changes & whoosh off like a rocket! Will point out this is only in normal auto mode, I have tried to get it to do it in Sport & manual mode but as yet hasn't done it has shifted perfectly fine power & speed wise.

I know the gearbox has its own gremlins from oil to electrical issues, just wondered if anyone has had anything of similar trouble & if so how it was resolved?

Cheers

Arran

Sorry, not easy to say what is wrong if anything.

?

How many miles has the car done?

?

Is there no longer and fault codes showing for misfires if there ever was before plugs and coils changed?

?

Has the car had the waterpump changed ever?

?

Has the DSG had 'Service Campaign' '34F7' ,  there should be a sticker in the spare tyre well if done.

Cheers Root i wasn't sure how to stick to my original thread new to this whole forum thingy.

Only sticker in my wheel well is the big white one that gives engine code, paint code etc, nothing obvious that I can see relating to 34F7 campaign?? Although may have been washed away from the 3" of water that currently enjoys residing with my spare wheel 😖

Not having the paper work from its first 5 dealer services I can't find out all Skoda UK will tell me is no outstanding recalls, paper work I have is for none dealer servicing done after.

Sorry again for making things complicated with my newb forum skills.

'34F7' should show here if outstanding.   So if not outstanding that is that.

Skoda UK are duty bound to tell you if done. They agreed a voluntary recall with the DVSA.

Water in the tyre well is likely from the flaps beside the rear bumper.   Threads on here on 'flaps'.

Sorry, but this is not helping you much with your question in the OP.

Ah brilliant Root I will grab my VIN after work & hop on the link see what comes up 👍

Water in the boot issue I came across that thread too technical for me bumper removal etc, may have to hold out until a bit more flush get my mechanic to have a butchers

@ArranMac1

On a good surface with nothing about.

Hold in the TC (Traction Control button)  & put TC off,

and in D boot the car from a standing start and see if you have the same thing as you posted about.

Ah ok will give that a go see what happens although probably not best at the mo as its ****ing down, will let you know once I try it what happens.

Cheers

So its selecting 3rd gear no problems then stuttering in lower revs then gaining power? Sounds fuel/electrical related and not clutch/box which might be a saviour. Often the case is new but wrong plugs work great for a few hundreds miles then start to play up.

What plugs did you put in it? I'd only ever recommend  NGK BKR7EIX as first choice then denso as a second choice, NEVER use deal supplied or recommened plugs as 99.9% they will throw the wrong plugs in it.

Well i tried the booting it from standing without traction control last night this time 1st, 2nd shifted perfectly but it got to 3rd & felt held back again then sudden surge of power boom! Tried this morning shifting 1st, 2nd & 3rd no issue at all just a lot of tyre smoke lol.

Have checked & I had the above NGK plugs fitted 2 weeks ago now.

Have put VIN in on the Skoda link above comes up with a green tick followed by:-

Dear customer,
No relevant recall campaigns have been launched by ŠKODA for the entered VIN tmbfp65j5b3107802.

On looking through paperwork again found that in 2014 dealer services the box was ticked for gearbox oil change this was around 20k on the clock?

Rely on Skoda for absolutely F**k all......In my opinion they are useless, They never had any recognition of mine having a new engine fitted at 14k.

Strange that its only in 3rd.....1st,3rd,5th & reverse are controlled by clutch K1 so you would think that if it was any issues with the clutch gearbox the other gears would be affected too, No other signs of loss of power or anything at all and it doesn't do it manual? No flashing of gear symbols on the maxidot etc can only be a good sign.

Get it plugged in to a decent fault reader and see if anything flags up, My advice would be not to boot it however much tempted😃

Wow that's impressive of them not to notice a whole engine replacement!

Yeah it is an odd one that is for sure especially how random it is in doing it, I had about 4 weeks ago had power issue but had engine management light flashing then go off the few days later had EPC light come on then go out followed by LIMP mode, cleared up & ran fine next day had errors checked & cleared plus new plugs fitted & compression test done, compression all good spark plugs don't appear to have been changed for a long time huge gap in all of them & black & corroded. Have not had any flashing gear symbols to date & since new plugs fitted & cleared errors not had any warning lights fingers crossed.

Gear issue has come on since then but still do wonder if its some sort of misfire or electrical sensor fault just trying to find it out is the hard part, errors flag up random as follows as had checked & cleared twice now:-

2 x Electrical relay faults

1 x Oxygen sensor

1 x fuel sensor

1 x cylinder 3 loss of compression

1 x random loss of compression in all cylinders

I have heard you need to find someone with DSG related fault reader if that is at fault??

I am putting my bet on the Supercharger clutch being the issue.

But that is just an uneducated guess.

Get the 2 rubber belt inspected and see just how they look.

& be sure to watch for any loss of coolant indicating it could be new water pump time.

Best do as @Mickmartin suggests.  No more booting it till the issue is diagnosed and fixed.

Especially not down a slip road onto a motorway or in an outside lane with something up your jacksy.

Any decent code reader will bring up any mechantronic/Electrical faults related to the gearbox, My worry would be the compression issues as that could be heading down the road valve/piston problems, Oxygen and fuel

sensor is totally relatable to your issues too.

Get it plugged back in again, Could be as simple as sensor however I’d be getting that compression check again to be on the safe side.

Eek supercharger clutch, belts that doesn't sound good 😬 so far no signs of any loss of coolant, the cost of the water pump scares me lol stupid electrical unit!

I had the compression checked after second lot of errors at same time as new plugs were fitted, compression was all spot on that was only just about 2 weeks ago, i get the sensor idea as so many on their think the issue was the random errors & what to try first hence new plugs as most people said do them, the possibly new coil packs & so on

If your car has gone 9 years on the original waterpump then good.

About £500 to get the New Waterpump fitted and new belts, new coolant.

Not come across anything to say water pump has been replaced in what paper work I have, looking at the water pump price wise so far looking at just shy of £300 just for the pump unless looking in the wrong place? 😫

Baring in mind that the OP is not sure about drilling a hole in the spare tyre well without the use of an electric drill or mountainbike repairs,

maybe best step away from changing a waterpump.

Should be around £150-180 from most car component shops/motor spares, It was £128 I believe will a trade discount when I last checked for the pump alone, Insourced mine on amazon from Germany for just over £100.

One thing for sure will not be having a Stage 1 remap any time soon, need to know the engine is cured, just really no idea where to start or who to go to now 🙄

@ArranMac1

Do you know that your car is not already remapped.  Maybe with the hopeless Revo Stage 1?

Or has the car had a Software update since you got it?

?

Have you got the Code for those NGK plugs that were fitted, are they on your invoice?

  • Author

@Roottootemoot

Nothing to say it has been document wise & no way of knowing I guess without going on rolling road? Same with software update again no idea??

Not to hand will try find out to double check I know they were expensive NGK my mechanic said they were the recommended one for the CAVE engine??

Get it plugged in would be my first go to, I have 2 OBD readers and thought my car was error free then plugged it into VCDS two weeks ago and it threw up ignition timing faults. If you can, Unplug the map and fuel sensors and reconnect them.

Again if there's no obvious signs of smoke etc when the loss of power happens I would be heading the route of a sensor, When you start the car are there any signs of dodgy idling or misfires?
