Full Sized Tyre as Spare

Recommended Posts

@MartiniB Thanks for the information about using 206/65R16 as a spare tyre size, I'm planning on getting mine replaced (with the Continental EcoContact 6) however I'm having trouble finding the correct steel wheel, I know it must have a PCD of 5x112 and a central bore of 57.1, but what about the offset?

I have found this black steel wheel Trevble TR8667 which has an offset of 46.00 but not sure how it differs from the stock spare wheel.

Any help would be appreciated.

i would'nt worry to much about the offset, its only for temporary use and does'nt need to be exact, and most vw/ skoda offsets are around 40 - 46 mm anyway

6.5Jx16 ET41 is the correct specification of 16" rim for the Superb MK3. 215/60R16 might not fit flush in the wheel well, but 195/65R16 could be used to make the spare tyre a bit thinner.

For those wondering - yes, u can fit a full size spare in a Superb.

A small trim off the plastic edging, and it fits very easily 👍🏽

Easy to remove and put the tyre in too.

Boot carpet sits about 3 cm higher, but u don't notice it.

Sorry.....I missed this.

They r the standard 19" wheels that come with the L&K model.

I've stumbled across this thread after searching for spare wheel options for my 66 plate 150 PS 2WD L&K estate.

I fell foul of the goo and needed to be transported home the week before last.

I'm searching my head about options that will fit in the wheel well without raising the boot floor. My wheels are 19" on 234/40 R19 tyres.

I'd prefer a wider tyre (than a skinny space saver) so I'm assuming it'll need to be a 205 width wheel, but that combo of wheel size and tyre size will be best whilst still fitting in the well?

Thanks in advance, I'm sending myself loopy looking at this.

On the Superb MK3, the 215/60R16 tyre size fitted to a 6.5Jx16 ET41 rim raises the carpet slightly, perhaps by about 6mm.

I suggest you try the same size 215/60R16 tyre, but fitted to a 0.5" narrower 6Jx16 ET43 rim from the Karoq. By fitting the same size tyre to a 0.5" narrower rim, when inflated, the width of the tyre (as measured from sidewall to sidewall) will be about 6mm narrower. Therefore, the carpet should now be flush.

This avoids the need to use those really quite unpleasant 125/70R18 space saver tyres.

An alternative to the 6Jx16 ET43 rim from the Karoq, is a 6Jx16 ET40 rim from the Superb MK1. The 6Jx16 ET40 rim is a winter tyre size on the Superb MK1.

The three photos above of the Alcar 6665, Alcar 9490, and Alcar 8426 are actual photos of these steel rims (ie. not generic photos). Notice that the Alcar 6665 is a 14-hole design, the Alcar 9490 is a 15-hole design, and the Alcar 8426 is an 18-hole design.

I've included details of the 6.5Jx16 ET41 steel rim from the Superb MK3 for completeness, not because the carpet will fit flush (because it won't with a 215/60R16 tyre size fitted to a 6,5J rim width).

Would a 125/70 R18 (spacesaver)be a disaster if used on a superb running 235/40 R19s?

Why use a skinny space saver tyre when u can use a proper size spare like the ones @Carlston mentioned....

or even put a full size 19" spare.

I have that in mine, and it has the 235/40/19 tyres.

Going on holiday soon and there's loads of official VAG skinnys on eBay.

I'm hoping it won't need to be used very often, so I'm weighing up the benefits of buying one that I know will do the job so I can just put it to bed.

Also thanks to @Carlston awesome post I can see that adding rims, tyres, jack and brace, will bring it in at double (if not triple) of a skinny.

Although I have a flexi floor I don't want the carpet lifting, hence not having a 235/40 R19.

Not relevant to those that do not cram the boot / rear of stuff when on trips, but if you have to remove everything and fit the spare then the wheel tyre that comes off has to go someplace.

If not into the spare tyre well until it is fixed then stuff might need put in there and the wheel left on top of the boot floor.

The spare wheel jack and foam kit (without spare wheel) is cheap at 1359CZK (about £46.70). The link is to "eshop skoda cz" but UK dealers should be able to order one if you give them the OEM part number 3V0093860B

There's a different kit available if you have a 272HP/280HP 4x4 model, which has a slightly different OEM part number 3V0093860C .

Pros and Cons have been described already:

a)  same size as all other wheels
+ can be installed on any axle
+ can be used for unlimited distances
+ no size diff = no speed limits
+ Cruise control will be available
 - boot floor will be pushed few cm up
 - most expensive

b) custom 205/65r16, full diameter (my choice)
-> https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/442912-full-size-spare-wheel/page/2/?tab=comments#comment-5040470

+ minor width diff will provide safe driving on + 30% of speed printed on spare disc. Important note, when installed on rear axle.
+ can be used for longer distances
+ minor circumference diff will provide ability of Cruise control usage. In theory, i haven't had to test it after OEM 205/55r16 were replaced.
+ fits in it's place, doesn't change size of boot.

c) OEM 205/55r16
+ lot wider than 'd' = safer than 'd', but don't think printed speed limit can be exceed more than + 10%, even when installed on rear axle.
+ fits in it's place, doesn't change size of boot
 - huge circumference difference disables usage of Cruise Control

 - huge circumference difference isn't healthy for 4x4

d) OEM 125/70r18
+ fits in it's place, doesn't change size of boot
 - huge width difference = absolutely unsafe, even when installed or rear axle.
 - huge circumference difference disables usage of Cruise Control

 - huge circumference difference isn't healthy for 4x4

GREAT summary @MartiniB. In a last minute dash before we go on holiday at the weekend, for my L&K on 19", I bought a 205/55 r16 from eBay. It is in decent knick with the foam insert and scissor jack. £45 picked up (1 hour away).

I know the size difference is noticeable but I'll take it steady should I ever need it.

another idea, i need Direct Tire Pressure Monitoring System instead stock Indirect

i finally got around (6 years later) to putting the spare 19" full size wheel into my car. its a 280 4x4, so the extra skinny wheel, and the big foam insert from the factory.

the rear trim piece pops up easily enough, but I have the factory towbar, so left that connected, and worked away with a snips. super easy job to do, trimmmed up the foam insert, and now i have a full size spare.

i also have the variable boot floor, and i had no idea what the hell that was actually for, but now, it takes the slight bump out of the floor with the slightly bigger wheel in place, but the factory tray thing that used to sit into the floor now sits on top of it.

i think i could drop the foam insert a bit by trimming the bottom of if with a saw, so I will do that piece tonight and see how close to flush i can get it

thanks to the OP for the instructions!

I too wanted a full size spare. I now have it - a new full size wheel and a 215/55 R17 tyre (underinflated). Thanks to all on here for inspiration. Rim only sits slightly lower than boot floor but with tyre sits slightly higher. Some thick underlay is the solution - I found some grey stuff from a national carpet shop. The polystyrene inset in the spare wheel set had to be trimmed to fit inside the new rim so maybe there's a more appropriately sized version. Hopefully the photos answer any questions (they at least answer the questions I had before I started)
