RE: 2006 vrS OWNERS STUTTER - SKODA UK FIX

Featured Replies

Thanks for the update

I rang my dealer this morning to get mine booked in. They knew nothing about it at first but then it was sorted when I explained the email I had received telling me they had indeed been contacted by SUK and to book it in

They told me the part was on order and they would ring me when it came in. I would love to get it done before next friday because I will be covering motorway miles aswell as some decent A roads next weekend. Hey Ho :)

  • First off, well done to those who condensed the thread Couple of questions if anyone knows the answer. 1) Where do skoda dealers fit the 14.5mm gasket? Position 6 or 11? Seem to remember reading th

I've had 4 or 5 Fabia vRS 06 or 07 models. My current one is the first that I've noticed a stutter on. Anyway, had it fixed yesterday. Seems fine now, fuel economy still great too. Got 62.7mpg this morning! Apparently a washer or grommit has been changed on the EGR valve!

I think the delay has been Skoda UK, calculating the exact size hole and testing cars, to fix the stutter but keep the EU4 class. But they seem to have sorted it, which I believe is more than the rest of the VAG group.

Having spoken at length with someone at Skoda Technical re a totally different problem on a different Skoda the subject of the fabias came up & what you are thinking I believe to be correct. Skoda UK have worked long & hard to sort this problem.

I understand that in some other European countries the attitude has been that due to the new emission laws thats the way the car will be so live with it !!

First impressions following ECU adaption and modified EGR valve gasket

My car 2006 Fabia 1.9TDi

First test drive today, apart from trip home after collecting car from dealer yesterday, a short local journey, urban and country roads about 20 miles. Throttle operation is now smoother and more progressive, the very obvious dead spot when beginning to open the throttle seems to have disappeared. When pulling away or changing up in lower gears the lack of hesitation is a definite improvement.

One incident which curbed my enthusiasm was a definite stutter when changing from second to third gear. This occurred ten minutes after cold start but has not been repeated since.

Another test drive this afternoon, 25 miles including near motorway type drive but weather conditions limited continuous top speeds. Again the results were positive, much smoother driving because of more progressive and predictable throttle response. No further stutter. Cruise control also seems to be improved with no evidence of the previous jerky operation.

Having enjoyed 4 years of very economical motoring with my previous Fabia, it will take more extensive journeys before I am able to say whether the fix has done anything to improve the poor fuel consumption which was a long way short of the published extra uban figure.

I will update this after more miles. I

I have heard different again! The EGR mod is supposed to now be a no go, as it screws emissions! (the mod i believe is a restrictive gasket, smaller diameter hole)

According to earlier posts on this forum the previous fix involved a modified

EGV gasket but this was apparently not a success and was almost immediately withdrawn.

It seems that modifications to the exhaust valve operation, including changes to the size of the gasket, can have an adverse effect on engine operating temeratures and emmissions. Perhaps this was the reason it was quickly withdrawn.

This latest fix being tested by Skoda also involves a modified EGV gasket but this time they have also issued software for the dealer to carry out an ECU adaption.

So far I am pleased with the results, see my previous posts. I hope to get some mileage under the bonnet this weekend to see what effect on fuel consumption.

how will u know if it's kicking out the correct emissions still?

also, how do i go about getting mine recalled? just called my local dealer or contact skoda uk direct?

I have a six week old Fabia VRS and have kept up with all the messages concerning the stutter and I noticed it from the first day of delivery. With the latest posts mentioning a fix I contacted Skoda customer services today about this and they mention 'hesitation' is the issue and to speak to a dealer who will have all the details. Spoke to my local dealer who said they have detailed fix information and need to replace the EGR (I think) gasket which has a hole in it. They also went into detail about the very new ones having a even smaller one which will build up the exhaust gases. This was very interesting I as I have done just over 1000 miles and every now and then when I put my foot down I get plumes of smoke out the back of the exhaust. I mentioned this and they are sure this is down to me having the smaller whole type and definately needs replacing and some set up work done so exhaust gases are released frequently and not allowed to build up.

Going in next week for the work and will give an update after that.

Would be interested to know if anyone has the plumes of smoke every now and then on one of the new VRSs.

Most VRS's kick out a plume of smoke when you boot it.

I think it's just the excess soot coming out of the exhaust with the extra pressure of air coming from you booting it...i could be wrong tho

Ref the queries raised by JimVRS, I have no way of knowing about the emission levels but have to rely on the fact that it was a Skoda approved modification carried out on their instructions by an approved dealer. The vehicle was in the workshop from 9.00 am until 5.00 pm, this included an extensive road test, so it is reasonable to assume that the whole range of engine parameters were carefully checked. Time will tell.

I initially raised my complaint about the car with the dealer within a week of delivery and after three returns to workshop and test drives by everyone from the dealer principal down, I resorted to letter writing and ultimately received confirmation that Skoda had been notified about the problem with my car and were investigating. I also contacted Skoda customer services direct and then started receiving fortnightly phone calls from Skoda to let me know they were still actively investigating the problem.

I get the impression the fix is currently on a limited trial and if it solves the stutter and related symptoms it will be released for those cars where the fault has been registered

with Skoda by the dealer. This is conjecture on my part but seems logical.

well my replacement egr gasket has been put off another week due to my dealer not being able to get the part on also my car is getting worse it has stalled twice today in 2nd gear

Sorry to hear about your problem trying to get the fix installed. Judging by the numerous contributors to the Briskoda forum over the 8 months since I took delivery of my car there must be a lot of stuttering Fabias and it will take time to get them all rectified.

In any case I doubt that Skoda will rush into fitting the modified EGV gasket and ECU adaption to all affected cars until they have analysed the feedback from those already modified. I am expecting a call from Skoda customer service department next week.

It's nearly a week since mine was fixed and it seems that the fix has been a success.

No stutters, no hesitation at low throttle setting, and no drop off in road speed at constant throttle. Hope to test extra urban fuel consumption today.

how will u know if it's kicking out the correct emissions still?

i don't think anybody will be able to tell whether your car is euro 3 or 4 emissions , unless they change the MOT testing machines to test whats actually in the exhaust smoke , i can't see that happening though . All manufacturers do is make the cars compliant with the regulations , after selling it they have no control over it , you could top your oil up with the incorrect spec oil , this could change the emissions

So I have a question... is this not a good time to order a fully loaded Furby vRS??? P.S: That is a serious question, or are they bulding the ew ones now with modified bits to solve the problem???

Alex

P.S. doeas anyone know anybody whom has purchased a 2006 vRS and not suffered this problem, or is it all of them?

I have a new Fab vRS, 800 miles with an 'occasional 'misfire' in 2 and or 3 put it down to my inexperienced driving - is this what you are all calling a stutter? If it is surely it is a warrenty job so I have 3 years to sort it - unless it is doing damage.

So do I have this infection and is it causing any damage?

The best thing to do would be take your car to the dealer who can take a vagcom readout and send it to SUK and then wait :)

ahh just found the pole, 71 with problem 33 without!! Thats ney good figures, seems as though a couple have been fixed so Im gonna push on and get one...

It's a week since the ECU and EGV modifications and I was beginning to think they had solved the problem but the stutter has returned.

There was one stutter incident the day after the mod and then the car seemed to settle down but yesterday there were two more stutters and again today. I was also disappointed to find the extra urban fuel consumption, though marginally improved, is still well below the published figure. The best I can get is 61 mph.

Cruise control is smoother but seems to return even lower motorway mpg.

I understand that Skoda have reached the end of the line with the stuttering 1.9 TDi and no further fixes are planned. It's quite unbelievable that they expect to continue selling models fitted with this engine and all it's problems to the unsuspecting public..

I've decided there is more to life than waiting for the next stutter and sharing my problems with other Briskodians, I want to enjoy my motoring again so have decided to move over to Honda.

The best I can get is 61 mph.

Eeek. Even the 1.2 HTP goes better than that...

EDIT: Sorry, couldn't resist. I know, I know, I'm a child. :o

I had a message when i got in from work today from Skoda to take my car in to my local dealer for a 'replacement gasket', to be fitted so getting somewhere at last.

I contacted my local dealer today about the 'Fix' I have read about in this forum. I was told that a fix did exist with a replacement gasket restricting airflow but that they had received an e-mail today saying all fixes had to be recalled and undone. As the cars have been found to be emitting excessive emissions they were deemed illegal and Skoda do not want to be seen to be breaking emissions regulations. The e-mail seemed to say that the stutter is a result of ever increasing emissions regs and was not a design fault. Sounds like the VW clan are closing ranks on this one.

Well it obviously is a design fault as other manufacturers seem to be able to produce cars that don't have such problems. I will be contacting Skoda Customer services tomorrow and then Lex Leasing who provide the company car to my workplace. Its driving me nuts and I'm not going to let this lie. Unlike a private buyer I'm stuck with the car for the next three years. Plenty of time to keep hassling until I get a fix or Skoda get fed up of me the same way I'm getting fed up of their car.

I hope the one I am getting in 7-10 days soesnt have this problem... if it does, how long do I have to reject the car? and will I get a refund if thats what I do? What is the legislation on this???

More importantly is the stutter dangerous, and do remapped cars suffer from the same problem? anyone out there had a map yet and what did it do to the stutter?

Revo remap proved to be a 99% fix on mine. I just get the odd hint of a stutter once in a while.

I don't beleive the stutter is dangerous at all, I can't see it being a problem for the dill wit drivers either, but i'm sure well hear from them.

cracking car with or without stutter.

You had me at ' I don't believe'! , interesting about the remap, hmmmmmm!
