Cambelt change necessary after 5 years?

Skoda service staff quoting a price for a car / engine they know nothing about is when you might want to ask.  Do you want to phone a friend .   A 1.5 TSI ACT done at a fixed price that a 1.2 or 1.4 TSI is done for is maybe worth having done.   If they stand by that quote of £579.  They are certainly no place near there normal hourly rates and costs for parts and 20% vat.  But if they are going to have a fully qualified tech on the job for 4-6 hours instead of doing 2 or 3 cars and making them money that is their concern.

The reason you change a cambelt kit is to prevent this from happening. 

It's all about the potential of one snapping within my opinion. Otherwise there would be no point changing it, it wouldn't be a serviceable item. 

The main point being the frequency of when it should be changed. 

Skoda now state 10 years, although they're not prepared to guarantee that.

Time will tell with those that have them for 10 years or more or are buying ones around then.     Timing chains might well not snap or stretch but the other components give up the will to live.     Well past time VW put 7 plus year warranties on their engine.  No way though.    They had to on DQ200 DSG,s in some world regions because the Never need to service as life time oil used was a load of guff.   As to the European owners, tough titty. VW could please their selves with **** ups.

Wonderful.  Which dealership is that?  Maybe plenty will use them if they want their1.5 TSI ACT cam belt done.   Have a couple of days away for a break and car into the dealership and still pay out less than having done at their local dealership..

I’ve said for a long time that the 5 year thing has always been a uk rip off on these tsi engines. I can understand anyone being worried and getting the belt changed, but the every 5 years age thing doesn’t make sense and was never in the official service manuals but dealers and many specialists have quoted it for years.

Thank goodness they are officially saying it isn’t needed.

I'm new to the Skoda world, and was unaware that this could have been an expensive problem that I may have bought myself into a month ago. It's a relief that I probably won't need to splash out a grand or so this year on a cambelt change.

 

I would imagine this Karoq forum is maybe 5 years old, about the same as my 18 plate - in the history of this forum, has anybody posted first-hand that they have had a cambelt fail and consequently suffered the massive bill it entailed?

Not to my knowledge - on this range of tsi engines - and I’ve been on here a few years. One or two have had issues from timing belts not being done properly at dealers…

Looking good, cos that's the concrete proof we need one way or the other.

There is never going to be concrete proof.

Go by what the Manufacturers did advise or now advise, you decide.

 

Have an extended warranty valid, and if VW,s advice, guidelines, recommendations or specification prove to be wrong for you it is only money.

 

People on this forum, section and on others need maybe to stop talking about cam belts as though Advice or Recommendations cover them all.

The TSI,s and TDI,s advice might not be the same.

Just been told by  Caffyns  Ashford that  my Karoq  1.5  SEL TSI   has a lifetime  belt  and will not  need changing.

 

I am very pleased to have saved £775.00 which I was going to pay in three weeks time.   What is a lifetime? 

 

at  73 years old will the cambelt  outlive me?

What model year is your car, please.

 It is  August  2018,  and I have have done 14,800 miles,  with no problems apart from a fight with a Spanish lorry 

 

in Calais docks.  Lorry 1,  Skoda front wing and bumper 0.

   The  information was verbal, after the lady on service reception put me on hold while she went away to check.

 

They had given the same information to my daughter , who has a similar model ,  but not the two cylinder gadget,

 

about  an hour earlier.   They did say I could have the new belt fitted if I still wanted to!  Will leave it a bit longer,

 

sure there will lots of info about this on this forum.    Give Caffyns  Ashford a ring.

Probably. 73 years is pretty old for a cambelt.

Just to help confirm everyone comments, the Skoda website now appears to have removed all mention of the Cambelt 5 yearly Change in its maintenance section.. Looks like it is no longer a thing...
