Skoda MFD3 Trinax - My thoughts **Warning Lots of Pictures**

Featured Replies

I'm struggling here...

It's a 6? inch lcd screen. It lives in your car. It doesn't make it go faster, or drive better. It plays the same satnav discs, but with a "better synthesised voice". It plays music somewhat better than the previous incarnation, or the cheap head unit that normally comes in Skodas. You like the sound better than your home stereo. Do you go and sit in your car to listen to music in the evenings? It plays DVDs. We all know you can't, or shouldn't, or wouldn't want to, watch DVDs in the car while you're driving, which, IMHO, a car is for...

It costs at LEAST 1.5k pounds! Let me tell you, you can buy a pretty nice stereo for the lounge for that money, and you can sit indoors in the warm, with the light on, to listen to the music.

What am I missing... ?

the point......

Nick, It doesn't use the DX mapping that the MFD and MFD2 use. Maps are Navteq, TMC is now fully covered for all roads.

The unit is made by VDO.

Stu, do you have enhanced phone control via bluetooth like we can see on pics?

Not at the moment Andrey but I am looking into it.

Yes if you buy the correct TMC enabled disk. The unit can't do it without the right disk.

Cheers Ian, i better start saving, who's getting a mfd3 and want to donate their mfd2 to me ;)

Before you get too excited TMC on the MFD2 is only M/ways.

:( no way to fool it then?

Maybe in the new year, if you donate a couple of hundred quid to me in return

ill have to see what the second hand market rate is by then mate ;) might be just as cheap to get a mfd3 ;)

What about parking distance control, Stu? It is seems, that there are no graphics on display , but does it decrease volume of sound when you activate the rear gear like Stream Unit?

And can you make a night pictures with buttons illumination etc?

  • Author

I've not got anything like the visual display with the Stream but there is a coding option in VAG-COM to monitor the input from reverse. It's still early days for VAG-COM, the guys at RossTech are working to implement some new things that will support the RNS510.

It would be good to get a look at a Factory Fit one and see what it's coded to.

Thats something I wouldnt want to loose tbh - if it gets worked out however Im up for an MFD3

You won't miss the PDC graphics for long.

I did however raise the pitch of the PDC beeps because it was hard to distinguish over the radio at times.

Yep it all blends into insignificance when you can see who's calling, dial your phone numbers and search your contacts via the touch screen :P;)

Stu, it is clear, that we loose graffic from parking distance sensors, but does it even decrease volume of a music when you activate the rear gear? It must be an a settings like in Stream unit.

  • Author

Yes it seems that way Andrey.

I've been doing some more digging around and it seems that the reverse gear input is to activate the rear veiw camera display - Therefore you wouldn't need graphics.

..hmm so we need a retrofit rear camera buy in then? :)
