  1. Many people think that if something is fitted it must work to pass an MOT. This is not true. For instance, a rear wiper and washer doesn't need to work. There was a thread on the high level rear light on another forum. I'm not sure about whether a high level rear light is compulsory on a new car now, but it would appear that if a high level light has several bulbs/LEDs the car will fail an MOT if fewer than half ot the fitted bulbs/LEDs are not working. However if the light is not working att all it will pass bevcause it could be disconnected, and no further investigation by the tester is allowed. I'm not sure whether this makes any sense, but that is how it is.
  2. Good news this morning. The car is in Emden. Just waiting for a ship, might take a bit longer due to fewer cars to fery. Then hopefully a short wait, depending on the availability of lorry drivers, so perhaps another 3 weeks. Oredered end of May, build week 28 or 29, (can't remember which), and I was expecting it mid-October. So timing looks about right.
  3. I hope I haven't misunderstood . Whoever think they arestake charging their car, heating or lighting their homes because the get their electricity from a green provider is mistaken. The green energy company may purchase their energy from a third pary who uses solar/wind power but once it is put into the grid with all of the other sources, what comes out at the user end is just electricity. We are all just as green as everyone else. If you look at some of the power ads on TV you woill see that they will frequently have disclaimers stating that the power comes from the grid, probably because their earlier adverts were misleading consumers thinking that they were claiming something that was patently impossible.
  4. This will depend on whether the lights are activated by microswitches on the brake pedal or by hydraulic pressure in the brakelines. Some brands of car have microswitches on the brake pedal which have two functions, 1: to operate the brakelights and, 2: to disengage cruise control. Failre can cause all sorts of apparently unrelated issues.
  5. Although ethanol may be 33% enery in ethanol, if you do the sums, the extra 5% ethano will give a reduction of about 1.6% to the energy value of the fuel. If a car does 50 mpg on E5, that translates into a drop of ~0.8 mpg. Probably a bit simplistic though.
  6. I don't think the difference in mpg, if there is a difference, is significant enough to cause extra visits to a petrol station.
  7. There is no shortage of fuel! I had to get fuel this morning. Couldn't get near local Tesco's due to queueing, both for fuel and access to the shop, but I did get fuel at our local station which includes a conveniemnce store. So the issue there is that people queue for fuel, then when you get to the second pump behind another car you have to wait for ages due to the driver in front doing their shopping and getting Costa coffee.
  8. Still waiting for news of my Edition. Build week 28 or 29. Latest from the chat end of last week is that it is still being built, and is in a queue for chips. Did you specify digital cockpit?

  10. I shall be happy if that is true. I'm not a huge fan of motorways, autoroutes, autobahns etc, so I prefer to use N roads in France as we are now not tight for time. 50 mph seems stupidly slow on some of the wide flat roads we use.
  11. The speed limit for single carriageway roads in France is now 80kph rather than 90 kph.(unless a lower speed is indicated)
  12. I wouldn't buy a bi-fuel car, as it is important that I can travel through the Channel Tunnel (normal times) ans, as far as I am aware, LPG cvehicles cannot travel.

  16. Got a call from the salesman this morning about 8.30. Apparently he has no more info than the chat chap. The only difference is that you can get a response from the chat far quicker than the agent, and although I was told the agent had more info, I'm not sure that is correct.
  17. Yes there is. I asked about mine yesterday. Latest info is that the build has commenced but it is incomplete. The chap asked me if I had spoken to the dealer as they apparently have more information than the chat people. He said he would get in touch with them, but no information a day and a half later.
  18. It's a pity that the person who wrote this article has made things as clear as mud. The headline refers to Karoq and Kodiak Scout models, perhaps implying that the 4 wheel drive versions are to be ditched, then this. 'Skoda’s rugged Karoq and Kodiaq SUVs are set to be axed from its UK new car line-up due to limited customer demand.' This implies that all Karoq and Kodiak versions are to be discontinued. As the article was dated June last year, this obviously didn't happen!

    This thread is going off topic; even so I have comments. Am I ok as I passed my test nearly 51 years ago. My father took his test in his 40s, so if the system above was in place, 40 years after his test he would be in his 80s. It is a fallacy to depend on how long a person has had a licence, age may be a limiting factor. But I don't agree with retesting on age basis either. FYI I took a PCV test just over 3 years ago, got a CPC and now I can drive preserved buses with over 70 people on it.
  20. Might be worth asking for delivery on or after 2nd January as it will be a 2022 car rather than 2021, and may be worth a little more in the future.
  21. Sorry, I should clarify. The car was not a stock car, it was a factory built with optional extras ( never mind that the salesman was useless and managed to get it built with esp rather than the requested cruise control) and was specifically requested for 58 delivery. Strangely they wouldn't let me have a test drive until after I had placed an order (???)
  22. Just checked with my daughter. I was right, it was £2500. Seems like an excessive excess to me!
  23. In 2008 I ordered a car which I specifically asked to be delivered with a 58 plate. I don't know why the dealer didn't want to honour this (the excuse was that the manufacturer insisted, presumably to meet targets and it wouldn't affect the residual value ?????) and the actually quoted me the 08 plate registration. I basically refused to go through with the purchase, eventually they agreed to change it and was duly delivered with the agreed 58 plate. So I assume they had to unregister the car as above and re-register it. Didn't deal with that agent again.
  24. My daughter and I went to a Renault dealer and was required to sign a document before she took the car for a test drive. When we came back she told me that there was a huge excess on the document. I seem to recall £2500, but I may be wrong. I'll correct if it is wrong and I remember. I have had to have quite a few loan cars and I believe the agent I use has a £250 excess. My own insurance covers me for loan cars and I think that that has an excess of £400. I used to use my insurance as the excess was cheaper but now it seems to be the other way round.
