Is it dead? Roll up, roll up, place yer bets....
I've often suggested that she's missed a great business opportunity. Her roast potato's (and wedges, come to think of it) are always amazing. My Son is a chef and even he is bemused at how good they are, consistently. Aunt Bessie, eat your spuds out 😁 We go out occasionally for breakfast, and good as they always are, they're never quite up to DIY standards. G

Is it dead? Roll up, roll up, place yer bets....
Agreed, I think it's reasonable to look for more than simply taking it off charge and starting (see my confidence growing!) the Juke straight away. Even if this is moving the goal post a smidge. This request depended on my finding a working multimeter, but I see what you're after. I think I'm starting to smell a Kit-kat 😁 I'd just like to point out the efforts I'm going to here. Holding multimeter leads on both battery terminals, while taking a photo at the same time is no mean feat with only one arm that works! More like Triggers Broom-endale. Yes I miscalculated sawing some flooring a couple of decades ago It was very upsetting. I blame the people we purchased the house from. If they didn't have the CH pump under the floor at the top of the stairs, I wouldn't have felt the need to move it to the airing cupboard, and wouldn't have discovered the hash someone had made of the square (ish) of floor that had been cut out. It looked like they'd done it with a blunt road drill, from outside, on the end of a JCB arm 😡 It's now back on charge and drawing fairly nicely: Slow to update today as having a lazy (easy like) Sunday morning. Then Mrs Gaz tempted me with an intermission of: 😎 G

Is it dead? Roll up, roll up, place yer bets....
Oooh fightin' talk 💪 😎 So, if I get the Juke to start, with this battery....? Money where your mouth is - I want at least a four bar Kit-Kat, or even a double Snickers if I do. And I'll obviously reciprocate if I fail. G

Is it dead? Roll up, roll up, place yer bets....
8:30pm sitrep..... Well it's still drawing circa 3 amps from my trusty old style battery charger (possibly mid 1980's vintage). No leaks, cracks, or bulges 👍 I dried it late afternoon, but there was some more (albeit less) condensation just now. The battery's not warm. Decided to not leave it on charge overnight, so have switched it off and will put it back on charge in the morning. A bit slow compared to Pub Bingo, but I'm quite looking forward to finding out how it fares. Until tomorrow..... Gaz PS: Yes, it's an EFB PPS: Stanley (the stool - first pic) is older than the battery charger. Been with me, man and boy, and has even been with me to car meets for chums to meet 😁

Is it dead? Roll up, roll up, place yer bets....
She lives not far away from me, so would've seen minus 5 at times over the last few days, so freezing is quite likely/possible. There was nothing untoward when I oiked it out of the Juke. I'll check on it between eight and nine when it's been trickling for eight hours. Just looked up the price of a new one - cheapy about £140, decent about £220. Stop/start seems to bump the price quite sharply, dunno why that should surprise me. She won't be happy and has already said she can't afford anything 'til after Christmas, not that the car's going anywhere. I forgot to let the handbrake off - sod it! 🙄 Gaz

Is it dead? Roll up, roll up, place yer bets....
Can't find an obvious date code Mike But the perky little blighter's started to condensate on the outside (garage is dry but not heated - still 5°C outside) and is showing potential signs of life: I like being an optimist, but I'd still say it's 50-50. Gaz

Is it dead? Roll up, roll up, place yer bets....
An ex work colleague has been medically refrained from driving. She told me about it two days ago, silly plonker. Her trusty '64 plate Nissan Juke hasn't been started since August 😳 I've just been round and it's dead as a dodo, not even LEDs coming on. Looks like it might be the original battery: And it's now in my garage, on charge, but at first sight taking bugger all amps: So what do we think, will it pick up and be resuscitated, or has it departed this mortal coil? I'll leave it on trickle for a good while, and check in on it from time to time. A quid says it's dead. Gaz

Best tyres for VRS
That's a bag of worms you've just opened! Plenty of discussion on this in the Tyre Zone: https://www.briskoda.net/forums/forum/213-tyres-zone/ Personally, my preferences for a vRS are Pilot Sport 4's (or 5's now obviously), Goodyear Eagle assymetricals, Avon ZV7's, and Hankook Ventus v12's. Although I'm currently running Cross Climate 2's on one GTI and PS4's on the other. CC2's are a good year rounder. There are other all season tyres to choose from, some of which reportedly have a better Summer/warmer weather focus. The world's your lobster really when it comes to tyre choice. Depends a lot on where you are, your driving style, and what you're looking for - something that'll get you about better in snow/colder weather, or a tarmac terrorist summer thrashable. Gaz

At last, an Electric car I can be genuinely excited about!
I think I saw 1.48 to 60mph. Certainly a sub 8 1/4: Matt's language and responses were quite telling! 😁 Gaz

SKODA OCTAVIA VRS CHALLENGE TSI - Snow driving advice please
If you're thinking of having two sets of tyres ( i.e. keeping the Pirelli's - n'owt wrong with them, they just might not be best suited to current conditions), then I'd suggest not going for CC2's, but head for decent winter tyres. Only go down the CC2 route if your vRS is going to wear them year round - full winters being better purposed than all season tyres when it comes to the recent low temperatures, snow and ice. Don't think any of us would laugh. That'd be tempting too much fate 🙄 Three cars ago I had an immaculate Saab 9-5, on good tyres, which I wrote off at walking pace on ice under snow. I felt pretty stupid about that for a long time Gaz

SKODA OCTAVIA VRS CHALLENGE TSI - Snow driving advice please
Good review for CC's as they wear too 👍: I think when it comes to turning the traction control off, the caveat should be to only do it for as long as is necessary. It's there for a reason. Gaz

SKODA OCTAVIA VRS CHALLENGE TSI - Snow driving advice please
Hello and welcome Shauna What make of tyre does the car currently have? What are the tread depths and how many miles has the car done? It's all a bit subjective in terms of the hill, temperature and other factors, but yes, if you've summer tyres fitted, that will be a factor. Winter, or all season tyres on now, will probably help. I've been a nay-sayer on all season tyres, as I live right on the south coast, but I have Michelin Cross Climate 2's on my car (also a DSG), and in the current cold temperatures, I'm glad I do. Gaz

Tyre valve damage and MOT query
+1 👍 Get 'em changed IMO. I wouldn't want them on my car, for cosmetic, or functional reasons. Where has the metal gone - if you've inflated the tyres since, have you blown metal swarf into the tyre? Very unlikely I expect in reality, but what if? Metal caps are known to get stuck in the circumstances you've experienced. Best avoided - as you now know. Gaz

OMG, me too! 😎 The 928 was my dream for a couple of decades. I saw his 912 and got goosebumps. But then we got to the Cooper S, external hinges and sliding windows et al and that just felt like automotive royalty! Gaz

Amundsen Mib2 Map Updates 2023/2024
Bingo!! Oh my goodness, it was as simple as that - thank you so much I had a really old file, not even car related, called 'maps', which is why it had defaulted to 'maps 2' once unzipped. Version 17 maps, and all working tickety boo, on the original 16gb SD card. Muchas gracias Langers! 👍 😎 Gaz

Amundsen Mib2 Map Updates 2023/2024
Well the fun I'm having with updating maps is starting to wane 🙁 After a particularly stupid start yesterday, it became apparent this is the thread for me - ish, and not the Columbus thread as the Golf has a Discover Media2 unit. I decided to go via the VW website and found an option for 9.33gb V.17 maps (as in a size that'll fit my 16gb VW SD card), which I've downloaded to my MBP, unzipped with Keka (as per VW's recommendation) and then cleaned the VW SD card with CleanMyDrive2 (also per VW's recommendation). And I can clearly see the folder on the SD card: Put the card in the car and it's not playing: So I popped into VW. They told me I could download the AS V.17 maps onto an ordinary SD Card of the right size (I've a 64gb card) and that it doesn't need to be a VW card. This doesn't appear to be correct. And that seems to be borne out by the VW website, which clearly states it needs to be a VW card for the AS maps. I went to their parts/accessories counter, and was told that a 32gb card wasn't available for my car, but the latest I could get was V.15, on a 16gb card (like what I already have) with a reference of 5NA 919 866 CA. This also appears to be incorrect, as the VW website clearly says V.17 is available for my media unit (although I'll need a 32gb card as it looks like the 15.93gb AS maps need 16.1gb of space). A 16gb card from VW will cost me..... drum roll..... the princely sum of £136.21. A quick squizz online and it looks like I can get the same card for £45, which is plug and play, and currently sounding very tempting: But is there something I'm missing or ought to try before embracing F-it mode and buying the 32gb card? and will my unit be able to use a 32gb card if VW are saying the only available card is a 16gb version? It's the first time I've tried updating maps, so this is all new to me, and I'm currently feeling quite stupid Gaz

Columbus Map Update 2023 (MIB1/2 HIGH)
Thanks Tell - embarrassingly, the SD card says 'Volkswagen Navigation AS' - so the clues were all there, ready for me to enthusiastically ignore I'm back in my box now, lid closed. Gaz
