What was your first car?

Oooh I had a "lovely" K reg 1.4 Ford Escort L

Had no options so windy windows all round, no air bag, ABS that didn't really work, and the interior was pretty manky from the guy who had it before me smoking 50 zillion cigarettes a day.

However I did get it up to an indicated 110mph, which was probably more like 90. Would probably go a bit quicker given a down hill stretch, but the steering went so light I didn't dare get any more out of it.

Cost £400 to buy the car - £1400 to insure it for the first year.

Ahhh the days of being 17 :D

1982 Mk1 Golf 1.1c started me off at 17, use to cut out going up hills, down hills and err...come to think of it on the flat as well.

Traded it in for a Mk2 XR2 at a garage that was at the bottom of a steep bank, so just coasted it into the forecourt. Never heard anything back off them - they probably just scrapped it.

Lots of fords here.

First car a 1980 Fiesta 1.1S (swapped the engine for a 1.3 later)

After that also a 1988 Mk2 XR2, one of my old loves (had 4 different engines for that car, std 1.6, totally modified 1.6 a totally modified 1.9 and the last months a 1.4 because I couldnt find a 1.6 to replace the 1.9)

Late 1960's Morris Minor Traveller in dark blue with 100k miles on the clock. Cost me £125. Brakes failed going down a hill on an icy road, drove along the road verge bank to stop it before I reached a main road junction. Later the king pins went. Oh the joys of motoring.

First car was a Mk1 Escort, black and modded to look like a Mexico. Everything electrical had been connected directly to the battery and one night, before I got around to connecting everything up properly it caught fire on Dunster Mile just outside Minehead. Bought for £100. I tried to restore it but gave up. Sent to the scrappers.

First car? A 1989 G reg Fiat Panda 750. Something like 30bhp when it was new, and bearing in mind I didn't pass my test until I was 18, mid-2000, I wouldn't be surprised if it had less bhp than I had years by the time I got hold of it. As you'd expect, it was an absolute crock of ****, it was flimsy, it'd cut out for no reason, sometimes it wouldn't start, sometimes it would start but then not rev at all, sometimes it'd just drop back to idle when driving, etc. But it was given to me free and meant I didn't have to rely on my parents or our rubbish village bus service so I loved it :)

Mine was a Cinquecento sx. 899cc and 38 Italian stallions trying to get out of the small bonnet. Filled the back with speakers and had a chrome exhaust trim and neon lights under the floor.

Man, some good times...

I "test drove" one once, as a potential Panda replacement (god knows why). The handbrake had seized on the forecourt and it didn't have enough power behind it to get it moving. Didn't buy it ;)

1985 C regd Black Mini 1000, fitted a holley intake manifold fitted bigger 1 3/4" carb, LCB exhaust manifold and home made centre exit single box exhoust system, sounded great and get to a ton pretty quickly, made plenty of people feel sick with its cornering abilities and even played chicken with a TVR one day after he thought he had right of way. :hi:

A Gold Mk3 Escort 1.1, cherished for decades by a little old man. One year of driving to college later and it was a wreck, shame on my teenage self.

At least the handbrake worked. I had a couple of house bricks in the boot to wedge under the wheels...

I bought my first car in February last year. 1994 Audi 80 avant 1.9tdi. It was really slow, had a heavy clutch, locked itself when it was started or switched off or the boot was closed when the engine was off, it didn't like corners and it only broke down once (wishbone fractured at 70mph). I miss it, but I'm glad to have replaced it with fabia vrs :)
