Reduce oil consumption

Featured Replies

My 06 FSI VRS is just under the normal consumption limit, so can't get any work done under the warranty scheme, presumably the only cure is to rebuild with new rings etc?

It's a pain in the arse to have to keep a constant supply and fill it up so often, as my mileage is fairly high. I was using the low level warning light, but I had the dreaded low pressure light flicker on after a particularly hasty roundabout recently, and the level was low, but not off the dipstick...None of this gives me confidence in driving it hard any more, which means it's just becoming a money sponge now it's £1.45 a litre in my local Tesco.

And I taught they just called the vrs diesel the oil burners on here.

Mines pretty bad too, drinking around 1 litre to around 7-800 miles. Im getting abit sick of it now im going to do some investigating in the next few weeks to find out exactly where it is going.

Same problem here on my 06 vRS petrol. I have gone through 6 litres on oil since the last service 10 months ago and only done 5500 miles.

It is currently on long-life oil, but I think I will change to normal at the next service although it has effectively already had a complete oil change already!

Does anyone know if there is anything I can do to slow down the consumption? Also, where is the stuff going given that it is not leaking, it must be burning it but I have never noticed anything.

The oil is being burnt in mine, the haze in the headlights of following cars under full throttle tells me that. I'm assuming new rings is the answer, or a new car.

The tfsi engine has a reputation for drinking oil.

Some engines seem to be far worse than others but the vast majority report that it drinks oil.

Theres pretty much nothing you can do and even the official line from Skoda is that it's a "characteristic of the car".

If its any comfort at least you know theres nothing actually wrong with the car.

Redex do an oil treatment additive (ASDA) I tried it in my girlfriends Arosa nearly year ago and we havnt even used 2 litres yet! Its supposed to coat the engine to reduce leaks, wear and consumption. If I cant work out where its going ill be using it again.

On a break in york and the car has started to run really rough with a high idle of no less than 1000 rpm. Ive also noticed massive oil consumption over the last week so I took the manifold pipe off the PCV today to discover it full of oil, so much that it was dripping from the pipe when I removed it. Ive got a new valve on order from DM KEITH that will arrive thursday (which is alot slower than what im used to lol)...fingers crossed!

5w40 oil took my consumption down from 1L per 1200miles to 1L per 1800miles.

Did you change from 5W30-5W40 during service OR is it okay to put 5W40 in with 5W30?

There is 5W30 in mine, I need to get a few litres as a top up but was considering in changing to 5W40...not sure wheather I need to wait until service time.

Happy to say mine didnt use a drop between the last oil change and the latest oil change last week, not sure of the mileage as its on variable :)

Yours is also a diesel Dallan :)

As for possibly altering the spec/viscosity of oil used, I'd certainly recommend dropping Guy a line at Opie, or ask on their section here. They would certainly be able to advise further, whilst still keeping within VAG guidelines and oil spec tolerances.

I changed to 5w40 at service time. I spoke to Opie oils who recommended a few good quality 5w40 oils. I was told to use these due to my cars state of tune.

5W40 has the same viscosity as 5W30

5W40 has the same viscosity as 5W30

Really - how come ??

5W is the viscosity. The 30 and 40 bit is related to the oils ability to keep the viscosity of 5W at a certain temperture. For example 5W40 holds a viscosity of 5W at a higher temperture than 5W30 does.

The W is Winter viscosity rating, the second number is the viscosity at engine operating temp (measured at 100 deg C / 210 F). A low W rating me4ans the oil is "thin" at 0 deg C which is what you want, the second number the viscosity at higher temp. Generally, the engine will be designed to use a certain SAE viscosity (the second number), and a low W rating so that the oil flows around the engine when you start it from cold. It's [possible that using a higher viscosity oil at operating temp (so say a 40 instead of 30) might mean less consumption, it might also means more engine friction (to pump a thicker fluid around the engine), If I was going to change anything, I'd be inclined to switch from a 5W-30 to a 5W-40 if you use a lot of oil. I'd also be inclined to try some kind of oil additive such as slick 50 to try to offset the increased friction; both of these measures will also help if you run low and the dreaded low pressure light flicks on (as mine has).

Viscosity is simply a measurement of shear force resistance of the oil, which will determine the properties of the hydrodynamic wedge between the moving surfaces.

5W-30 does not have the same viscosity as 5W-40 when your engine is at a stable running temp, but is when it is cold.

Doesnt matter what you say on here someone will always come along and say your wrong, so unless your qualified id just take it to a garage.
