Fitted the SuperSkoda lower grill cover today. 2 minute job, the clips just hook round two of the vertical ribs in the grill, mine were not tight to get on (note..they clip round and locate inside the middle of the rib, not right round it, maybe that is why previous poster found them tight to get on ?) then 2 screws through the cover and into the clips.

Looks good, the engine warmed up noticably quicker on the way home from work tonight, 4 degrees outside, 3 miles stop / start and traffic lights and engine temp. around 80 on the dial. Went out again later, about 8 miles and the temp. needle staying rock solid on 90 degrees.

Fitted the same as yours, in the middle of the rib. One was a snug fit the other one was a bit tight to get on to begin with but once it was started it was ok and a good fit .

There is one thing to remember in all this and that is that the coolant warms up a lot quicker than the oil in our engines (based on my experience of the 2.0L TDI).

Temperature this morning on my commute was around 2 degC.

I do a 3.5 mile run @ 40mph on a local road and then get onto the A1(M) @ around 70 mph. Coolant is up to 90degC by the time I get to the Motorway (3.5 miles) but the oil was only around 70 degC by then. It took a further 5 - 7 miles (total 10 miles) for the oil to get to 90degC. I then have another 10 miles to do and oil was at 93 degC (had been up to 101 degC) when I pulled into the car park at the office.

My recommendation on this is that, if your routine journey is up to 10, maybe 15 miles, then the lower grill cover may be beneficial, but if it is any longer don't fit one.

I may however experiment with a temporary DIY cover (plastic card with cable ties) and see what sort of results I get.

I always have the oil temp selected at least until oil has got to a decent temp, 80-90 dg , don't like to drive the car tion hard until then.

The amount of drivers, neighbours I see blasting their car away from stone cold... then they wonder why the engines done and burning oil.

IIRC Its part of the MFD but you have to have the service regime set to 'variable'; it doesn't display if you're on 'fixed'.

If you're like me on 'Fixed', the Oil Temp display can be activated by VCDS.

Mine is set to "variable servicing" according to the factory code sticker in the handbook, but I can`t see anything to do with oil temp in the Maxidot display options ?

Looking at my lower grill with a view to making a temporary cover, I noticed a stone lodged between two crossflow tubes. I picked it out and the crater left a mess of crushed fins - lucky it didn't puncture the system. A mesh grill sounds like a good idea.

Further poking about got rid of a lot of leaves, more bits of sizeable grit and some bits of wood!!

There seems to be three heat exchangers, one must be for the air con, one for coolant, the other?

Also, on the front of the block there appears to be an oil/water intercooler - is this correct. I've got one on my MG TF, made by KTM of Austrian bike fame, and it looks very similar.

That does seem excessive. I've been watching the gauge as the temperature drops and it's taking longer to get to 90, but nothing like that number of miles. In the summer it took around 7 miles. Before the recent cold spell it had gone to 8 miles, and this morning (5C) it took 9 miles. Hot air was coming out of the vents within 2 miles, and the water is up to temp within 5 miles. That's with a mix of 30 - 60mph on mainly town & B roads, with a mile or so of A road (former A1) that's the only usual place to get to 60. My '03 Octy TDi was a bit better (no oil temp gauge, just going on water temp), but not overly so.

I regularly needed to use a sheet of thin ply or cardboard on my old Escorts, but hadn't considered it with more recent cars. I'll be interested to hear how folks get on with the grill cover - getting up to temp sooner has got to be a benefit.

If you scroll through the mfd screen, ie consumption, time travelled etc, it should be there. I believe it is always there but some on fixed service only get -- on the display. I'm on fixed and mine displays fine. Note until the temp gets above 50 deg you get the -- display also.

Oh and there is a tick box in, Setup menu... Then MFD data.. Scroll down and tick oil temp display box.

In the MaxiDot (MFD) display go to - Menu - Setup - MFD Data - 'tick' the relevant box.

If you do not have an option for 'Oil Temp' it may be that you are on fixed regime servicing and, as Merlinman suggests, the ability to display Oil Temp may need VCDS to enable it.

Yeti's built before wk45/09 do not have the option to display oil temp or the gear recommendation indicator; another thought :wonder:

A bit harsh andyspan, I'll wait to hear from hood about his order and consider joining in. Russia has some dodgy people as does almost everywhere but liverpool may well be quite genuine and if fluent in both languages and resident there could be a real asset. I've never been quick to send money to those I don't know much about but am happy for him to get established here.
