Featured Replies

Grapo I wouldn't let my car go down to the orange light if you check it regular it shouldn't become on issue, George keep it up

A sensible and positive contribution.

Someone has obviously hacked into Seb's account.

  • The vrs won't have the oil in the system long enough for it to do any damage

  • As someone who fought and won against Skoda.... Twice, you need to keep on at them! I rejected my car after it had 4 new engines in 2 years (they admitted there was a problem) so I'm happy to help you

  • Rag it to the redline on a regular basis from day 1 of ownership and its less likely you'll have issues. End of. Mine runs super sweet with no oil problemo "running in" this way hehe. When I sell it I

to cover theirselfs, but its a general Fabia Owners manual.

Page 168

"It is normal for the engine to consume oil. THE OIL CONSUMPTION MAY BE AS MUCH AS 0.5 L/1000 KM DEPENDING ON THE STYLE OF DRIVING AND THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH YOU OPERATE YOUR VEHICLE.

The oil consumption may be slightly higher than this during the first 5,000km.

One should therefore check the level at regular intervals, preferably every time after the fuel tank is filled or after driving long stretches.

We recommend maintaining the oil level within the range A if the engine has been operating at high loads, for example

etc etc

"The warning light in the instrument cluster* will indicate whether the oil level is too low.In this case, check the oil level as soon as possible.Top up with an appropriate quantity of oil."

I told you to ignore me lol, a new leaf has been turned ;) makes sense to check oil on a weekly basis regardless of the vehicle, I have always done so ever since my first car model T straight of the line

Weekly's a bit O.T.T. (unless you're doing a lot of miles or suspect there's a problem)!

Fabias (MKI & II vRSes) are the first cars I've checked the oil on - fortunately no issues (touch wood :) ).

I wasn't always this diligent - never once checked the oil on my Lupo GTi - sold it when it was four years old - only 20,000 on the clock - lasted one annual service to another.

My old dear had a Polo Sport from new (1.4 100PS) that used oil whereas prior to my GTi I had a Lupo Sport with the same engine - no oil useage!

^^^^ nice too talk isn't it ? ;)

The Twin Charger is at present pretty much a unique petrol engine in its small capacity & performance.

Twin Turbos a plenty in bigger capacity and Ford, Fiat and others are bringing in Small capacity

Twin Turbos or Turbo and Supercharge,

but only time will tell how they go once enough of them in use.

I tried, by using the DVLA figures to check how many Twin Chargers are Taxed in the UK.

vRS, Polo GTi, Seat 178 bhp & Audi 185 ps.

Roughly it looks like under 6000 Twin Chargers registered in the UK since 2009.

(If that figure is way out, someone can maybe say the correct numbers)

If checking your oil is the only thing to do to keep IMO a pretty amazing engine running OK, i think its worth the bother.

Obviously there are other failures,

but thats whats going to come out in the wash hopefully.

george

If they said twincharged engines will use more oil due to having a small capacity engine and both a turbo and supercharger but we'll supply you with 1L of oil free with each service i'd be happy.

If its beacuse of a manufacturers fault then they should just say which batch has a problem and recall them. Not wait for them to pop out of warranty!!

its been 2000 miles now since my service (that was 200 miles after the oil breather pipe mod) and the first 1000 miles the oil usage wasn't bad at all, hardly used any but this last 1000 miles has seen it at the bottom of the dipstick :(

i must admit after the first 1000 miles i lost all my concerns and neglected it a little so it came as a shock today to find it down there, booked into the dealers for the next installment :(

I went in to get two bottles of oil from the dealer yesterday. Want to use exactly the same stuff so no questions could be asked of the oil, after all it came from them. They seem cheaper that almost anywhere else for decent oil too which I find odd. Asked about what procedure was if I thought I was using too much oil and was told that they do like a drop, quoted what it says in the handbook about it could a litre in 600km or whatever it was and told me to top it up now when I was there, note the mileage and check it every tankful or every 1000 miles. Went to check and sods law the marker was spot on where it should have been. I do roughly 280-300 miles to a tank so should be often enough for checking.

I'm not going to stress over it as it's in warranty and if it does go badly wrong then it's all up to them to sort it.

QUICK UPDATE!

Everyone knows the history etc etc...

I had major issues with the car, finally got a new engine and have just completed the "running in" procedure (c. 1500 miles)..

The engine is now loosening up nicely and I finally got to start pushing it ;)..

Oil usage (or lack of :D ) is minimal, admittedly I did check after 20 - 30 mins of parking up and was on a slight gradient but it was at the max point (actually just over but we can't be picky). It is worth pointing out that the oil was changed after 300 miles due to the car being due a service, so I've covered 1200 miles with very little/if any usage :)

I'm a happy sole :D

At last Damo!!

Ours has been reported to Skoda as the breather pipe fix hasnt been the fix they said it would be

Which breather pipe is this fix changing? I might change it just as a precaution.

Mine has covered about 2000 miles since my new pistons seems perfect with oil usage now, nt that it was ever that bad anyway on mine.

nice one Damo, glad its all good now :)

mine has old breathers, and is perfect :p

Curse you Sharkrider with your vRS without a thirst for the amber nectar which is Castrol Edge :) :)

Damo, that sounds good, mine is pretty much the same after 2500 miles. Although i will be more prepared to pass judgement when i have got more miles on the engine. The original lump only started to show issues after 5 or 6000 miles.

Soul? Or are you a fish? ;)

Good news - the new cthe engine seems to be ok.

Had oil change for test done today - 3.6 litres put in and weighed, have 200 miles to cover then take it back to be measured.

Apparently revised engine has pins on the piston rings to stop them turning and lining up with the others.

That sounds quite bizarre. I am not an engineer but I thought the whole point was that the piston rings are supposed to be able to move? Any system employed to stop them lining up (I'm guessing here someone is suggesting that if all the holes in the Swiss cheese, sorry gaps in the rings line up the oil can get past) could result them being held in place and deposits building up on them, creating more damage later surely.

Ad Lav, hope the oil test works out the way you want it to.

It sometimes seems like VAG are using us as guinea pigs to develop this engine! Shame they're now planning to take it out of production just when there is hope that a non oil burning variant is on the horizon.

Mine failed the oil test last week.

Are they really taking the Twin Charger out of production ?

& just as my deposit on a new SEAT Ibiza Cupra is about to clear from my account.

Hope its a good one that i get if its to be one of the last.

One thing that attracted me to the vRS was the level of technology you were getting for the price in terms of engine and gearbox. The 1.4 TSI twincharger was voted International Engine of the Year in 2009. It was described as “a masterstroke of downsizing technology and a real engineering showcase". At the same time it picked up the Best Green Engine award. VW are now saying the engine is proving to be too complex and costly to produce. They will switch their focus to a more conventional turbocharged setup.

So if you've got a good one, hang on to it!

Interesting link about known problems that have been found in some engines: -

https://docs.google....rol9fu32RaIViYg

VW/VAG like to say lots about future plans, mostly through magazines and not in direct Media statements

they like to Simplify like with new A3's and bring in new technology like with Cylinder Deactivation.

They also like the Public to buy and try and help them out with advancing or improving.

Fault finding comes at the Public Buyers expense too often.

They are very very slow to accept faults are down to them.

REVO like to put blame where they can, & bunching a series of engines and possible faults together and saying watch out,

after the fact and they have taken customers money does not absolve them of any responsibility.

2010 and they should have been aware of possible problems, thats before they started providing Tuning on Twin Chargers.

http://www.falkland....evotechnik.html

** Maybe REVO should have a clear Warning in their Literature and Sites.**

? Do REVO give a hand out on that document to all customers or anyone making an enquiry ?

It would be good if VAG openly admitted that these were the known problems with standard engines.

george

I agree with the above. I had a revo map on my octavia which i was initially happy with but after a short period the car started to misfire and hesitate on occasions. My neighbor had the revo remap on his audi S3 and after 4 months his turbo went belly up. Coincidence? When the warranty runs out i know which map i will be getting APR.

Update:

Oil checked again this morning by the dealer

0.7 litres used in 107 miles!!!

Thats worse than before the breather pipe was replaced!!

Needless to say he's going to have aword with Skoda

Next route is some more checks on consumption

Then a new engine!!

Ouch!! I thought mine was bad using over a litre in 600 miles. I've had the breather pipe and new engine fitted and neither have sorted the problem, so I hope you have better luck then me.

i have 18000 miles on my vrs and used about 8 litres of castrol edge over those miles. Is this ok for the vrs or should i speak to the dealer
