Columbus firmware upgrade

Featured Replies

Its a good point, I hadn't thought about a 'volume license' or similar for franchised dealers but you know what...I bet these don't exist for Sat Nav maps! ;)

The good thing is, give it a few years (ok maybe a little longer) and all fw upgrades will be provided to cars 'over wireless' i.e. cars will be fitted with built in roaming Wi-Fi/Mi-Fi and updates will be delivered to all elements of the car (not just head units) over wireless and I guess this will form part of a cars regular service - what price will we pay for such service/capability...well that remains to be seen!

Either way, it's a good discussion point!

If Skoda dealers are fraudulently using single-user disks to load a number of head units, is it any wonder that their customers see nothing wrong with obtaining the data from un-licensed sources via torrent downloads?

IF, and it is unproven at this stage, they are using / distributing it without a license, then yes it would be illegal. I can't guarantee it or provide any evidence, but I doubt that Skoda dealers would be supplied with a disk and told they can't use it more than once...

I agree with Ray on nearly everything he has said above.

Of the many things that dealers have to legally display (among them VOSA MOT certificate, insurance, etc.), the license to distribute copies of their own branded maps (albeit licensed from Navteq) is probably very low on their agenda.

By paying £30 to a Skoda dealer for the update but no physical media (and several people commented on how good a deal this was) you are probably (I'm no lawyer here) obviating yourself of moral responsibility as you purchased a 'license' from a legitimate source.

Can anyone tell me what is the latest Firmware version and what maps should be loaded on a new 2013 Superb II with Columbus?

I was surprised to see it had 5 digit Post Code search only and complained to the dealer, Specialist Cars, Aberdeen who didn't have much of a clue but to be fair, said they would order a new disk and install it for me. Will a a new map disc upgrade the FW too or is that a separate process?

From the Version Information tab:

Delivery Part Number 3T0035680K

HW Version H09

SW Version 5238

Map Version HDD 7918

Edit:

From looking back on this thread it appears my map version is V9 yet the street I live in which has existed for 7 years isn't there. Also - why am I restricted to 5 digit postcode search?? :-(

I'm guessing that 'Specialist Cars of Aberdeen' is not a Skoda dealer or they would have connected their 'ELSA' diagnostic tool to determine the firmware/software/map code levels. 7918 is definitely the latest available map version and isn't likely to be updated until October/November this year. I haven't seen firmware levels starting with a '5' until now so that too looks very new. So maybe the 7-character Post Code feature needs to be activated by the ELSA or VCDS tool. I await other forum viewers updates on that.

Specialist Cars are a Skoda Dealer (as well as all others in the VAG group).

It transpires however that it's me that's been a bit of a plonker! When inputting a postcode I somehow expected the letters to appear after I input the numbers i.e after I input AB for Aberdeenshire it automatically reverts to numbers so when I input the numbers (thereby inputting 5 digits in total) it doesn't revert back to letter options and I assumed that I had a 5 digit entry unit what I failed to notice however is that all I had to do was press the ABC button and hey presto I can enter a full post code - oops.

On a slightly different topic however - I can't seem to get my iPhone to stream audio. The BT button is greyed out and there's no option on the iPhone to select any other output mode like there would be if there's an Apple TV unit it Bluetooth speakers to connect to. I've ticked the box to Autoplay Bluetooth Audio but that makes no difference. Any ideas?

Do you have a BT/phone module fitted to your car? It's not built in to the head unit...

If so, is it compatible with your phone?

Yes I have a BT Module. The phone fcility works as it should via BT I jaust can't get BT Audio.

The phone is an iPhone 4S.

What BT module do you have fitted? Not all do audio streaming...

My iPhone 4s does stream audio (quietly and with dodgy timing info) to my module.

Its phone related too I think. Im suffering the same thing with my new Samsung handset as kb, but my htc desire was fine, with track info I think. No change to module...

It's a brand new 2013 car so id like to think it's the most up to date. It's a Novero HT-4 which means nothing to me tbh

Well that is a very up-to-date module and gives pretty much full functionality (including streaming) according to this.

I do suspect it might be phone related rather than module related in this case.

I'll have a go with the Mrs' iPhone 4 in the morning.

OK so I've been a plonker twice in the same day!

Just before I went to bed (have to be up at silly o'clock) it suddenly dawned on me that I was trying to set up my phone for BT Audio via the Columbus unit when I should have been trying to do it via maxidot as my phone needed to talk to the BT Module not the Columbus - DOH!!

Dashed outside, quick fiddle with the maxidot menu and hey presto I have BT Audio.

I am now über spoiled for choice! Spotify Playlists on my iPhone, iPod via MDI, 32gb SD Card and what's left of the HDD (about 18gb IIRC) Oh and of course there's the slot for one of those old fashioned CD thingys :-)

I am now happy and can go to bed. Night Night.

Hi,

just purchased a late 2010 plate superb elegance from an dealer and asked them to upgrade the maps and firmware before I took delivery, short story is they upgraded the maps but not the firmware so I have 5 digit postcodes and no hidden menu. That dealer is some 80 miles from me so don't want to update to 3xxx as I don't have the maps to reload (& not sure the local dealers will be so kind), and as I have a 18Gb music partition I presume it hasn't been split into 3.

Is it possible to pull the maps off the HDD? or a safe way to update without re-partitioning the hdd and enable the hidden menu?

I think you're out of luck on both counts, a firmware update will format your HD & you can't extract the maps. There are plenty of kind people on the forum that will lend you a maps DVD

Discussions on how to obtain the V9 maps will be deleted, the only official method is to purchase from the dealer. The disc is copyright and any downloads will be illegal content.

I don't think so....direct from Navteq.....

Thanks, be good to understand if there a few people who have an older unit successfully upgraded to 402x fw and v8/9 maps?

Mine is a rev B running 4120 and v9 maps.

Although it is soon to belong to VRSerious.

Can you run this on SII pre-FL Columbus? I thought you can only update maps from DVD, but here they suggest SD card...

I saw this the other day whilst looking for the answer to my issue - I guess this is the 3yr updates on the new Octavia but doesn't say they are limited to them.

Has anyone tried to download and install from SD or dvd?  my 2mb link is a little sloooowww so still on part 1

Just a warning, if you have a rev A Columbus don't load 5xxx firmware. There is a possibility you will brick the Columbus.

Thanks for the heads up, but doesn't this warning always go with any upgrade of firmware?

What specific warnings have been issued with this firmware? And what benefit does it bring?

Basically the rev A units have a different internal memory structure and it is a few years since the last official firmware release for them. Some firmware releases can be modified to work, but a standard factory release stands a good chance of permanently bricking a rev A.

No warnings have been issued as these releases should not be available outside of the dealer network. Any 5xxx firmware is for the newer DAB units with LED screens. The header file contained within the firmware upgrade will state exactly which models it is intended for (C12 etc.). If your model is not on the list, which from memory is rev A and B units then you are doing this at your own risk.

IIRC it wasn't recommended going past 2xxx firmwares on rev A units.
