My record was 29 :D, I usually to 20-25 depending on closures during the day.

At least in the diesel I get in to double figures on the mpg :D

after each lap you have to come off and put your ticket in the barrier' date=' you'd be insane to do them all one after the other! Doing 2 in a row is enough!

I did 5 back to back once in my old black one - 48 minutes and nearly a full tank of fuel. :D

I was absolutely ****ed and the car was a tad on the warm side, with 2 very melted tyres.

Had to do it though as the place was pretty empty

Thanks guys.It all makes sense now.

I see that crashing is very expensive , especially if you need the air ambulance

I can imagine a no fuel situation would be a wallet basher. Is that what you mean by don't run out?

@maxim.....2 laps is enough? Ive never been but would like to make it worthwhile going.

24 laps is circa 330miles. I realise concentration will have to be at a peak at all times so I don't end up a statistic, and I wont be timing myself for that reason, but surely 24 laps in a day is more than achievable.

I didn't mean 2 laps per day, just 2 laps in one go! Best thing is to get there early in the morning, and get plenty of laps in then, ie. sunday morning.

24 in a day? Yeah, as I said it can be done. You'll be doing 10 minute laps, so that is only 240 minutes of driving - 4 hours. Track is open for what, 10 hours? However:

You will find the laps tiring, it's not like a four hour drive on the road. You really do need to concentrate or you'll become a statistic. I know your car is fast and you are the next Fangio but, go your own pace do not try and race someone or even keep up with them until you know what you are doing and where you are going and if someone wants to overtake - let them!

Then there are the closures when someone gets cocky or gets it wrong and decides to investigate the scenery - that'll knock an hour or two (or more if it is a death) out of the day. You may want to avoid the busy periods and go for lunch or spectate thats another hour or so gone. Then there are trips to get fuel, go for a coffee, have passenger laps, throw up etc etc.

24 in a day is a fair few. Do it over the space of 2 days woul be my recommendation for a first trip.

Got ya

Sounds like good advice my friend, not sure about the fangio thing though.:D

10 mins a lap? I'd be chuffed if i managed that on my first weekend there.

I have been watching as much ring footage as possible to see what goes on, and my worst fear is coming round a blind bend into the back of a tour bus.

Also trying to get a basic feel for it on GT4. You dont have to buy the barrier if you hit it on there. Clearly I'm not a retard and realise the real thing will be a world apart from the game, but the layout is identical apparently.

ish :D

Don't worry about the bus, it'd be his fault for not moving over for you :D

Worry about bikers! I had one try to jump on my bonnet at about 130 mph, I took to the grass to avoid them  She hadn't worked out that I would be going through a corner at that speed so just peeled in to it as I came along side :(

Buses hurt though, regardless of blame. As for bikers, well..........

(not all bikers irritate me obviously)

Then there are trips to get fuel' date=' ./QUOTE']

watch out for the speed trap on the way, as you come out of the car park and do a right there's a road that looks like a 60mph but its only a 30mph road, instant fine!

As am I but the same corners catch me out every time which are the ones that tighten once you have entered them or the blind ones  I'm just hoping I'm not going to do the same on the real track.

Also for you die hards what do you do in the way of insurance?

Also for you die hards what do you do in the way of insurance?

The ring is classified as a standard one way toll road with no speed limit, all the usual road laws apply in theory eg. passing on the left. So unless your insurance specifically excludes it, some UK companies do under the clause of "derestricted toll roads" then your existing policy will be fine. Just make sure you contact them to have your full cover extended to europe by getting a "green card". some companies dont require you to contact them, if you are unsure contact them. If you dont your cover will reduce to 3rd party only, the minimum requirement in europe and you dont want that in view of what could happen.

With the M5 I do 7 laps in a row, but with the Octavia I did not more than 3 laps in a row. And that was with Mov'it breaks.

cheers manny, I will speak to my insure and see where I stand.

you dont need to mention the ring, just say you are going to Germany.

no speed limit? I'm sure one of the corner's has a 70 sign on it... I was told that I only needed a green card if I was travelling outside of europe, some new EU law....

What foreign travel cover do I have for my car?

Travelling with your car to countries outside of the United Kingdom is considered as foreign travel. There are 2 categories of country to which the policyholder may travel, EU countries and non-EU countries.

You need not inform us in advance if you intend to travel to the EU as you do not need a

Never been to the ring, but travelled Germany extensively. If you don't speak German, and the policeman doesn't speak English, how do you explain that you have insurance? You show him your green card, thats how. It says what he wants to know in his language iirc, as it does for most other euro countries.

It's not a big job to get one, just ring your broker a week or so before you go and tell him where you are going. Usually no extra charge, but depends on your policy.

The new EU law to which you refer won't stop you getting a whopping fine or worse if you can't satisfy his questions.

Generally, the German police will only pull you if you give them cause to.

So no pre dawn auto ban runs to the beach then...

Not sure on what my policy says, a dam fine point to be aware of mind :)

Crying shame the M6 toll is not de-restricted... de restrict but zero tollerance approaching booths would be fine IMHO.

As to best route, I'm stuck in the middle of the land here, so a drive to Dover etc will take almost as long as the rest of the trip, another factor for consideration :D

and generally they are only interested in getting your speeding fine money and seeing your passport, they didn't even ask to see my insurance!

I'd be up for a trip to the Ring before the end of the year, so please count me in as a maybe.

Last month, we did an epic 3k mile tour of the Alps in the VX. Quite easily the best holiday of my life.

Came back via the Ring (be rude not to!). Arrived late in the evening and booked into the Dorint Hotel beside the new Ring. Had a room overlooking the finish line, which was amazing.

Spent the next day watching a Paul Manthey Racing trackday take place. Found various viewing locations around the track and it really helped get a feel for the place. In the evening we arrived at the ticket booths (they've installed English friendly machines now) and bought our 5 lap ticket.

Fortunately, Germany were playing football that night, so the track was quite empty. 90% of the cars were English, including a CTR, Exige, S2000, M3, MX5, Elan and TR6. It was a fantastic experience.

The next day we came back via Aachen, Antwerp, Bruge and onto Calais. Be warned that Antwerp is currently the home of the worst roadworks in Europe - very nasty.

As I say, can't say for certain, but we'd love to join you for this. Perhaps we can get some club vinyls made up for the event?!

I have just added another thread with the list in, please can this now be used to show your interest. Discussion may continue here, I have done this to hopefully make life easier for me and Carsten.

Any news on the hotel yet?

and crossing times?

  • Author

I have posted this in the other thread I now have on the go, its all gone very quiet at the moment. The problem is Carsten needs to know minimum numbers so he can try and get a group discount and the later it gets the more difficult it will be.

Regarding getting there, I'll be going out at around 6.45-7am on the Saturday, and back again at around 5pm on the Tuesday. Its not possible to get a discount on the crossing unless a huge number of people come along. I always book with the cheapest operator, at the moment P&O ,Seafrance and the chunnel seem quiet expensive. Hoverspeed are good, but the cardeck on the seacat can be a pain unless travelling 1st class. Speedferries use smaller seacats and are ok.

I have found a website of places to stay, the site is in german but its obvious what the room rates are. The site shows Hotels, B&B's and other accomodation which I believe are all in Nurburg itself although I am not sure where some of them are, I know most of them.

http://www.nuerburg.de/tourist-info/deutsch/hotels.php

So your coming home on the Monday now and not the Tuesday?

i'll book my crossing tonight and will sort out my definate nimber of people.
