Guide: Upgrading Columbus firmware and maps

Nope. Looks like he linked to the pictures on his device or computer rather than uploading them or hosting them online. The picture links aren't valid urls.

I've now removed the original links as I couldn't see them either using Firefox - they certainly didn't appear to point to Dropbox either!

Thanks to langers2k for doing the honours.

For what it's worth 'mpw246pl' your unit is identical to mine fitted in my Superb delivered 1st Dec 2011.

I have upgraded the map software (so far successfully) every year from the then new v8.0 (7690) > v9.0 (7918) > v10 (8048) > v11 (8117) > v12 (8195) > v13 (8348) and am now looking out for v14 which should arrive this month.

Re firmware, I have only upgraded twice, from the supplied 3984 to 5270 in Dec 2013 and then to 5274 in Mar 2015 - I doubt whether there'll be any others available for this unit now.

I will not say where my software/firmware came from but it clearly works and you are welcome to borrow the DVDs to test if you wish (as a 'diagnostic' measure of course).
PS: Rustynuts is very good but can be a little brusque at times. Sorry Rustynuts.

However, I will accept that at times I don't have the patience people think I should. Generally after a long day dealing with horrible customers. Thankfully, not many days like that, and today has been a good day, so I apologise.

Chris

Many thanks for taking the time to explain that the maps & software I'd chosen to install are the same as yours and should, by all acounts have worked. Guess its the source of my raw data or a fault within my machine.

I'll feed back when I know more.

I'm sorry to be dim, but can someone clarify the following please:

I have tried a pry tool, a screwdriver and a filler spreader on all 4 sides to remove the bezel so I can access the labels. I assume it IS the black bezel that contains the SD slot that I am removing? Somewhat anxious about breaking it!

If I cannot get the damn thing off, is there any other way to access the system info? Holding down setup for ages just give me FM and AM, but no sysinfo. It seems that some are enabled to show the info and some not. How do I become a 'have'?

Once I have identified the unit, is it pretty straightforward? I am in the IT biz, but this seems to be worrying me more than most!!

Thanks

No! The black bezel is the front of the Columbus and is attached by screws inside the unit.

You need to remove the facia that goes around the Columbus and climate panel, this should reveal 4 screws around the Columbus. Undo these and the entire unit should just slide out so you can see what stickers are on it. Be warned, the wiring might be quite short so be very careful when sliding it out.

You can see the four screws in this post: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/227790-fl-climatronic-retrofit/?p=2678090

Brilliant, thanks. Tried to pull it out but the wires are clearly super-short, so I will hit the local car audio guy up for it who installed my hands-free!

On the MK2 Octavia, you can also try removing the cubby hole on the dash board as you might be able to see the stickers that way or at least get your hands in to disconnect the wiring.

Couple of pictures here, just be careful of the wire for the hazard switch http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/193889-dash-mounted-top-storage-box-removal/?p=2308109

Sorry to resurrect this topic guys.

I have a 2013 Yeti retrofitted with a used Columbus.

Settings show

3T0035680B

H08

5230

7918

I understand the hardware is 5230 and mapping relates to 2012

I'm not sure which model the unit would have come from initially, but I would like to update maps. Not too concerned about the hardware.

I am aware that they can be purchased direct from Skoda but before I do that I was wondering if anyone has a 2016 update they wish to sell on before they purchas the latest update which is due soon. I am not too fussed about having the 2017 latest maps but would like something a bit newer and thought a member might like to recoup some of their outlay

Upgrade to firmware version 5238 only if you have issues with your current one.

Your maps are old (V10), you can safely upgrade that to the latest version right away.

Should a new Superb with Columbus come with the maps on a DVD?

I'm not sure but this thread is about the maps on the old Columbus unit fitted in the mk2 Superb not the current Columbus you have in your car.

You may be better off asking in the Superb III section.

No worries..... Someone will defo know in the Superb III section. :)

Quick question.   Downloaded file is 697,820kb, seems small considering it requires a DVD.  Is this correct/complete?

That sounds like a software download rather than maps.

Sorry, should have made clear, that is software.  Just surprised it's that small but guess it's still over CD size.  From your response it sounds like I'm good though.

Maps next.  Looks like got to down load them in parts so will take a good while.  Should be good to go by about June I think!

Don't really want to update the firmware until I have the maps as it looks like I may loose all current content during upgrade/install

Thanks for the help

Software will go on a cd if you wish. Maps requirement will be dependant on what level of software you have now and what you're going to do.

Ideally I want to get the latest maps, V14, on my unit and latest possible firmware which I believe is 5274.  Mine is a B spec' unit (if I've understood correctly, I'm new to this.)

I also want to upgrade the BT module as I currently can't connect an iphone.

The sw number on the label on the top will tell you more about what you have that anything else. That's what the unit originally started life as and will be a good indicator as to what you can do.

I've not physically checked the SW number yet, need to work out how to remove the unit.

I have displayed the information on the unit and it lists software as 3814

HW is H11

Off the top of my head a unit with HW 11 is one of the older lcd screen units. I would be wary of pushing the firmware too far as there's no benefit for anything much after what you have, unless you're happy to accept that things can go wrong. Certainly 5274 is a step too far for my liking. You can install the latest maps with what you have already.

Thanks Rusty

The main reason for updating the firmware was due to my intention to put the later BT module on.  From what I read that was advisable.

I may simply try putting the later BT unit on with the current firmware and see if it works, if not I'll try upgrading.  At the end of the day I need the BT working so if it won't work with the head unit I need a new one anyway so don't care too much if it gets fried

I'll be honest and say I'm not sure about Bluetooth compatibility with earlier software versions on the Columbus. I don't know exactly what issues you'd encounter, other than perhaps if you wanted Bluetooth streaming you'd need to replace the loom on the Bluetooth module perhaps.
