You need VCDS to recode the unit to work with your car.

You need to host your images on a website other than photo bucket - they changed their T&Cs recently so only paid subscriptions can host for third party websites, loot e.g. imager

Gosh, that's an old post, I'm way beyond those levels now.

Currently my firmware is at 5274 (though I don't expect any new versions for this old Columbus) and maps are v14 8477 and I'm looking for v15 which should be out in the next few weeks.

As for the source of my updates I'm not really allowed to say as the moderator doesn't like that - even though Skoda is notoriously hopeless at providing this information and service.

All I can say is that Google is your friend here. Good Hunting!

v15 Western Europe is available, I've just installed it. (CD_8015).

I think either you're wrong, or someone has been pulling your leg. Latest version is 8515...

I must be having a bad day. You're correct of course Rustynuts, I meant to write CD_8515.

I'll go and have a lie down.

Have managed to find the V15 version of maps, burnt to dvd-dl and all I get is dvd error!

Tried burning using different software and speeds and used 4 disks now and still I get an error. What am I doing wrong.

Did you burn the DVD on the slowest burn setting possible? The issue with installs via DVD is that the age of the CD player in your car can cause reading issues... with this in mind i ALWAYS install my updates from a SD card however in order to do this you still need a DVD with a very small piece of software installed on it to trigger the installation from the SD card.

Tried at varying speeds as I remember from last time to do it at the slowest burn speed. Got some more disks on the way so shall have another bash on night shift. Using good quality disks so shall try this otherwise may give the SD card way a go.

Burnt a disk of the iso image to a dl DVD and burnt a a speed of 2.8 as reported by the software. Still no joy. CD/DVD error is all I get.  What is the best burner software to use please?

Imgburn.

Shall give that a go later. Using good quality disks and last year had no problem at all. Why this time around. Oh well.

Hey.

anyone knows where I could get firmware / maps for my friends Superb (Columbus, I think it's MY12)? Update portal says you have to contact dealer, which not interested in.

Hi Folks

New here having recently acquired a s/h Skoda Superb MkII 2015.

Been looking at how to update maps, and have to admit to being a bit confused over which Columbus we have.

Interrogating the unit, we get ;

HW Vsn H27

SW Vsn 6276

Map West Europe

Active Map Supplier Navteq

Map Vsn HDD 8195

Putting the VIN to the website gives the disappointing "Your navigation can be updated only at the service. "

Looking at some posts, there may be a way to get a special disc that will enable updating via files downloaded to an SD card ?

(I know it reads at least 16GB cards; have music on one of them, nothing of ours on the internal drive).

Have 32GB card if needed.

Not keen on changing firmware/HDD partition sizes etc.

Advice sought on least painful way to update maps without recourse to dealer (amazed that a 2015 unit was that cumbersome)

Thanks in advance

You need a dvd maps disc version V15. You don't need to alter any partition sizes or update any firmware, just install new maps. You won't need to muck about with the sd card method as it's only for people who have issues installing off a dvd.

Thanks for swift response.

I got the impression a V15 disc was a rather expensive approach....

Well, you can go to the dealers and buy a genuine dvd. Or you can become a pirate and buy a back up disc from Ebay. Or you can download the maps from somewhere on the web and burn them to a disc yourself. Or you can download the maps from somewhere on the internet, find the required program and means to convert them to a workable sd card method along with the correct program to enable your unit to read and install them.

The first one is the only really legal method (short of borrowing a genuine disc from someone who bought it), the second one is just paying someone else to become a pirate for you, the third one is the cheapest, and the fourth one is overly complicated to get to where you need to be.

Asking where to download the maps probably won't get you very far other than Admin or Mods warning you about the benefits of buying a genuine disc. But in any event the Columbus is essentially the same as the VW RNS510 unit, and using a bit of google you can probably locate a viable download for the maps.

Hi, again, thanks for the swift response.

When I was doing the original search, one of the official update site pages had a "vHere" logo at the top, as in the free maps for use on tablets (eg Android) that use the Here App.

If they are using that on the discs, the actual map data might not be where the official disc cost is arising from.

Understood re not asking for pirate info here, though.

Is there no way to trigger map loading from the SD card in this instance?

The DVD route seems cumbersome/primitive/prone to read head issues.

The maps are specific to the RNS510 / Columbus unit. The maps come on a dvd. The people who have used the sd card method to load the maps have acquired the maps from *** (insert your chosen maps source here, Ebay, download, website etc.) and have had trouble with their unit reading a dvd so have resorted to a hack to use the same maps to load via sd card. The sd card method involves tricking your unit into thinking a software update is available, and further tricking the unit into thinking that the update is on a dvd drive hiding in the sd card slot. This then forces the unit to start a software update and loading the maps onto the hard drive instead of an actual software update. Liken it if you will to using a Windows 10 update procedure to load a new version of Mozilla Firefox onto your desktop because you can't be arsed to find a viable download / installation procedure for said program. Yes, you can probably do it, yes it's fraught with possible issues re damage to the unit and leaving you with a brick where you used to have a working unit, and yes it's something many people have done. But the reason they've done it is because the primitive and cumbersome method of simply using a dvd has failed due to [using a poor copied disc, using  a scratched or damaged disc, downloading a faulty maps iso, faulty dvd drive]. Also, with a dvd you can install the maps while driving, turn the unit off and back on again with no issues etc. whereas with the sd card method you start the process off and leave it turned on until it either finishes or fails and bricks your unit.

To be honest, if you're hell bent on trying to find a way to use you sd card method to install new maps without trying the plain and simple "stick a dvd in and let it copy" then good luck.

I know which primitive and cumbersome method I'd be using...

Thanks again for the detailed input; I'd not seen such a succinct summary before.

I'll stick to the cumbersome and primitive route, then.

Though I won't try it while driving ;)

While driving is fine. You just won't be able to use the nav while doing so.

After a map update procedure, how do you know if it has been successful?

Assuming the GPS & Maps functions still work, how can you tell if the maps were actually updated?

(assume no screen prompts actually told you, and no auto-ejection of the maps disc).

If you interrogate the unit and get "Map Vsn HDD xxxx" where xxxx is the current version, can you safely assume it went OK?

Is there any actual piece of UK map that folk know got updated recently that can be checked by putting in a UK postcode?

Yes.

Thanks for the confirmation :)

Be nice to know a piece of map that  was new to the current version, though, if anyone knows of one.....

You should get a progress bar whilst the Maps are updating then a message to confirm when it has finished. Then just check the map version number to confirm the new maps are installed.
