New Golf R

Oh dear, what have I started! Think I might just get the porsche now to buck the trend!

My neighbour has a gtr which I thought about buying. He's never got above 19mpg in it ;) but he does have 9 points on his license.

Yeah. My mates got one too. Awesome cars arent they.

2mpg we got coming over a local, very good road. Was absolutly caning it though. Overtook a 320d which was going for it, but looked like he was stopped compared, in the corners aswel as the straights haha

Ahaha. I know what you're saying.

Its just known as a poor mans porsche because its the most affordable porsche.

Driving a porsche shows interest in cars and driving, but the boxster is much cheaper than the more upmarket 911.

Simple as that. Dont look into it too much hahs.

Im fully aware you cant tell anything about a person by the car they drive. People in massive houses might have a massive mortgage, somebody driving a ferrari might be in a lot of debt.

Car really doesnt tell you anything about them. But 'poor mans porsche' is just a saying used because its as i say, the cheapest model.

I dont want a vrs for various reasons. I could have one if i wanted, but im just not interested in them. I'll spend a few K on a bike now n again n thats where i enjoy myself. I'm just not arsed by a 7 seconds to 60 car.

I just potter around in the car in comfort, doing 50mpg. It suits me just fine.

If i want a thrill, I'll get on the bike n go for a blast

Haha no worries I appreciate it is just a phrase. It just got me abit puzzled when you said the 'only reason' for having a Boxster was because of inability to afford a car on the next rung up the chain yet you yourself actively choose to drive a lower spec car so you can put money into enjoying your other toys (i.e the bike).

Horses for courses and all that :-)

Yeahh i know what you mean mate.

But a porsche does show interest doesnt it aha. A fabia urm, well, doesnt really haha.

Unless it's something a bit different like a vRS that's quick

Yeah thsts true. That shows abit of interest doesnt it.

I dno. We all like different things n have different views on everything eh! Otherwise, we'd all have a porsche boxster.

Oh wait..

It's all judging a book by it's cover, people will look at my Fabia think ohh he's a boring git who has no interest in cars what they don't know is the fact that I do have an interest in cars and for one it's just my cheap runaround and two they won't know it's secretly going to be a 1.8t behind all the 1.2 badging

I like things like that! Nobody expects it to shift, but it will!

Never get that with bikes. Everybody expects you to out accelerate them everywhere. Which you do anyway, without trying lol. Doesnt have the same effect though!

I know it's getting off topic but this whole "poor mans Porsche" made me chuckle so I thought I'd throw in my 2p...

I{snip}

Now where did I put those paper bags? I need to wear one over my head when out in the M135i in case anyone sees me and thinks I'm poor because I couldn't afford an M3........ Lol ;-)

Exactly! And speed isn't what makes a car fun anyway, so there's no guarantee a 911 would be more fun on the roads than a Boxster - possibly the opposite anyway as you'd not be stretching the 911's abilities.

And that's why I didn't buy a new 125d/M135i (as much as I'd like one), and opted for keeping the 330d until it dies, and buying an E30 as well - should provide just as much fun on the roads and I've got spare £££ left (and no deprecation on the E30 :))

S3 and golf R are basically the same

they are the same! I deliver both on a day to day basis and they are the same.

Nice one glad ur enjoying :)

Golf R ownership, after my 1.5 weeks of driving experience , 450 miles later with mixed road surfaces and class of roads M,A,B and C in Wiltshire combined with my weekly commute.

Loving it but in a different way to the vRS Estate.

Engine still remains tight but responsive when I feel that running - in  mode needs an uplift .

Engine note and surge is great, currently between 1500 - 5000 rpm. Pulling power is effortless and ultra smooth, with the slickness of the 6 speed, a tad better than the vRS box, don't know why but it feels so.

Currently the cornering / handling is superb on country roads and is like a magnet gripping tight and secure and again very smooth through  switchback corners at pace.

Generally the cost of running is comparative to the vRS ,AS RETUNING 33.5 mpg @ AVERAGE SPEED OF 35 mph. If anything slightly better than the vRS was at this stage of running-in.

No increase in insurance premium either!

Conclusion to date, Loving it ! MUCH FUN TO COME!

Glad you are pleased with it Keith. Now get some photos up for us to drool over! :-)

Sorry Tom,

To much driving fun to be had running - in this beauty. No time yet for quality of photos. Now car needs a good wash, prior to taking and posting photos.. Sent a brief one to George, when it was cleaner, via phone  to feed his habit!!

Loving it to bits, as I guess you are with your M135i

Returning a 39 mpg, average speed  40 mph, over a 120 mile trip out. So even more pleased with that.

It will be interesting to see what return I get, when I really start to stretch the performance. (Not long now)

Engine is now loosening up nicely.

Aim to get some photos up next week.

Interesting contrast when I jump into my Partners stealth fighter - Fabia vRS MK2 (CTHE)

Love the mix of qualities  .

Much Fun to be had in this household!!

Still a very rare sight on the roads, other than Dealers Demonstrators,

or it must just be the Cloak of Invisibility enabled on the privately owned ones out there.

Two of the cheapest are in Scotland on VW website at £28500.

Plenty of DSG demos about George - tempted!? Keep the vRS .

I am saving up for a Beetle, i like the headroom  to wear the Fox Hat when driving.

Dundee VW Dealerships Demonstrator which was the first i went to see.

Nice. (I asked if i could have visitation rights.)

The two lower priced ones in Scotland are no longer showing, so assume sold!

Beetle sounds like your type of motor- with a 300 bhp up front!!

Or a tuning pack, strapped to the 220 bhp!

Havent seen many around these parts; when my R36 was in for a service it was only GTI demo's parked up.

How is the Golf R going?

Boss,

Thanks for asking.

As above,

Now having covered 1200 miles ,the engine continues to be easing up nicely and continues to put a big smile on my face every time I turn the key.( yes, not keyless)

Long term fuel consumption is at 35mpg but in fairness only covering local mileage with only one trip above 120 miles after I picked her up.

One bit of excitement was going to Gurston Down Hill Climb recently, around country lines and general twisty B roads, a guy in a Porsche Boxster struggled to stay with me and I wasn't really trying.

Sorry I haven't got any photos up yet but just not got around yet to really taking any decent ones, only sent an outside shot to George and Sittingbull  by phone on request.

Recommend  anyone to buy one.

Are you thinking about an R?

Without wanting to be rude I wasn't that worried about pictures, I've seen them in the blue and they do look very nice.

I had a test drive and I was impressed, but think I need a longer one for a better idea because it wasn't quite as involving as the Fiesta ST I have now but far better as a daily all year round car for a family.

Think I missed the main boat when the cheaper lease deals were out.  Although that does limit tweaking a little...

Have thought about one a few times.  But not sure I need one if you know what I mean. :D

Was curious how the car was going, guessed you'd be "settling in" about now after the initial buzz.
