In the car more than anything outside changing.

But listening again today to a Golf R Estate booting it, it sounds damn good from outside.

(not sure if it is maybe a VW Salesman with his Perk / Demonstrator, but just were i stay he opens it up as he leaves the 30 mph limit.)

Long may he continue,  love it.

It has an effect on the outside noise as it opens some butterfly flaps at the back and allows all four pipes to open but gives a real good PRARRRP sound on changing gear and that is defo on the outside as its certainly turned a few heads and even (shamed to say) frightened a few ;)

It is most noticeable going 1st to 2nd on full throttle :)

DefendeBen is correct. In Race mode the outside exhaust flaps open to give more external noise.

They can also be permanently opened by VCDS or by unplugging the connectors when they are already opened. :)

Must say the tail pipes are a pita as they turn black in a couple of days and need constant cleaning as it soon starts to crust up :(

Noticed the crusting effect also happens on the larger twin pipes on the Audi RS3. Saw that on one in London yesterday. So would appear to be a common trait on these performance engines.

Mine sounded good in Race mode in the City during the busy day and echoing evening!!

Yeah the joy of four shiny pipes!

I use Autosol and give a quick polish weekly. It seems to prevent the crust from welding onto the chrome. Just a quick wipe & re-apply :)

ATM mine don't get left longer than 2 days between cleans (tail pipes only) as my OCD kicks in and my car sits right outside my lounge window in clear view from my chair :)

Mine had a Modesta treatment on them and they were super easy to clean (not a VAG car, but I assume potentially the same problems could have been in store), at least untill I swapped it out for a Sport Zorst. So far the only disfigurement with the new pipes is a teeny spot of rust on the inside of the bores :D Soon clears off with a good blast though :)

Just been offered a good spec'd Golf R Estate ,from a large VW dealer direct- £38500 Configured price offered @ £33500. Hence £5k discount.

PX deal offered, over the internet, would be about £2 k less than I would require.

Delivery lead time is quoted as 18 weeks.

If PCP, the rate currently is 6.3%.

What was the difference is ££££s between what they offered you and the cost of the discounted R estate Keith?

Forgive me as I have been away for a week, but are you buying a Golf R Estate now Keith? I might have my wires crossed

Genuine question Keith,not being sarcastic

I was just wondering the same! :D

I was genuinely wondering. I know Keith looked at RS3s and test drove some, but then I think he dismissed them after several reviews said it was a bit so-so and also has posted a lot about the Estate, including in Tom's M135 thread, so when I saw the latest post on the Estate with a fairly big discount I though he might be about to pull the trigger, so to speak.

:wonder: I'm confused........not that this is unusual.

There's nothing I really could have put on them either to stop that.  Seems to be just a symptom of that car / engine? :)

Think I would really struggle to know what to get as an alternative, when my Golf R comes upto time to move on.

It fulfils so many needs and the performance is up there with some awesome alternatives which would have much poorer mpg's :(

Think it would have to be better than the R to contemplate changing.

Apparently everyone suffers this on the Golf R and the Audi S3, from reading forums.

A quick damp cloth gets rid but it looks like they run too rich IMO but apparently it's normal :)

Best thing I put on the s3 gtechniq exo lasted some time

Just sounding out the market place Amanda,as my Partner's brother in law has just taken delivery of his. He got a good deal on his Merc PX but not much off the R.

Would be a nice useful and fun motor to have but I still fancy a R400 if the package is right but waiting to hear more andtest drive.

.

Perhaps he did get a good discount. After all they may have inflated the Merc PX to make your Partners b- i- l  feel he had made a wise purchase a few years ago and then not offering much discount to make him think that the new car would have great residuals. It's the price to change that counts.
