  • Wow! A bit of a fly on the wall comment in jest has been turned into me supposedly taking the credit for the size of the thread!?! Err...ok...   Just to clarify, I have far more important things to

  • Apologies is this thread is going a bit "off topic", but I'll carry on anyway as there is Golf R content... This is my personal experience of the S3, Golf R and M135i and the respective test drives.

There's no discernible lag with my four pot turbo engine, so I don't doubt that the 400 would be pretty similar.

Anyone who can't afford a "proper" motor?

Maybe.

But theyre gonna want about £40k for the r400 are they not?

Possibly, but what else is there at that price / performance level?

I think the current facelift (out at the end of the month) A45 is about £38K or so and that's about 380bhp. Still can't believe a 0-62 of 4.2 seconds. Mental, but in a good way

I went to MB about 3 or 4 months ago and got a quote, a base A45 was £38k by the time I had added few options paint/roof etc (no carbon pack, that was about £3.5k) it ended up at £44k ish!

The big thing that put me off the A45 was the slightly chavvy looking interior IMO the central display looks like an after thought and looked like the PID in swmbo's £7k Citigo, not what you would expect from a £40k car.

I love my Golf R, it is very understated and fits in with the crowd nicely until you floor it :) so no chance of changing for a good few years and at less than £28k mine was positively cheap in comparison to the A45 @ 0.7 seconds faster!

I hated the mini ipad thing stuck on the dash. Sadly it seems that this is something that not only Merc embrace, but several other manufactures too. I hate them. If they reduced the bezel to a thin veneer it would improve things massively imho. The thing that put me off mostly was the ride quality. I doubt I would drive the car hard enough, often enough, to feel the benefits of this set up, so the rest of the time I would be suffering in pain. Mind you, the new one looks to have tackled this problem as well as other well documented failings as well as giving the car a desperately needed power boost :D

I'd imagine the A45 would come with a discount of about 2.5-4k

Helps a little

Attempted to find the info but got through 3 pages of solid links then thought sod this, so VW quote a potential MPG of about 40mpg tops, so what have you all been getting then?

Depends on driving but my normal commute is 14miles mostly motorway and national speed limit. Motorway is currently 50mph limit. On way to work 44mpg and on way home around 36mpg. Town around 31-32mpg. I have an S3

28mpg :( but I don't really go very far, but when I do I like to get there quickly :)

Get a lovely GTR for not much more.

Okay its not as practical, and itll cost more to run, but it blows the R out the water in every other sense, by a huge margin.

And some people do just have the R as a sunday car, it seems

Uncle cant get over 28mpg out of his

I regularly get 36+ on a steady motorway run. Drops to 30-31 if the drive home involves "good progress"

28 definitely seems like the magic number ;)

From new until approx 5000 miles after a good running -in on tight engine and a discovery period getting to know the car in it's various driving modes and having some good fun car returned an average 34.5 mpg

Since then up to 10k service and on to 12750 as of today average 36.5 mpg.

Recently repeated 3 weeks consecutively the same journey to West London of 200 miles,A road Wiits,M4 and a stop startish South Circular car returned 38.5mpg mainly in ECO mode but about 20%in Race with an average speed of 52.5 mpg.

Drive along M4 up until Chiswick yielded over 41 mpg at average speed of 58 mpg.

Fuel consumption based on tank top Ups and cross checking known % discrepancy against computer .

Hope that helps with Real World owner experience.

I do recommend R critics have a read of the current TopGear mag in it's broad assessment of 28 hot hatches and some Estates on UK B roads and some off main road ,track etc. 4,5 and 6 cyl, lovely engine sounds or not.

Next mod on mine , V8 sound tracker!!

My commute of a total of approx 18 miles each way - 11miles (ish) single lane "A" roads and last bit in town/city.

I'm around 29mpg in my DSG.

Mainly in Eco mode but once or twice a week it ventures into a sportier moment, generally find the DSG encourages me to take it steady and having the speed in big digital numbers on the dash, calms things down, as it is way too easy to unintentionally go a bit quick ;)

Never look at the big speedo dial now.

Can't stand eco mode. Tried it once & felt like the car wasn't working properly :D

28 squirt and go man. Throttle and brake mode, sounds like my missus driving style.lol

Yeah Eco mode is not nice lol

Keith I'm shocked you are averaging 36mpg over 12k miles. Stop babying it and get your foot down! Lol ;-)
