New Golf R

Featured Replies

I thought keeping the hatch and estate separate made sense as they're quite different cars in terms of their market, around the time of the pre-FL Octavia mk 2 there were sod all performance estates but plenty of hatches (no hot Golf estate, Focus ST estate etc.) whereas now it's better although there's still not that many.

  • Wow! A bit of a fly on the wall comment in jest has been turned into me supposedly taking the credit for the size of the thread!?! Err...ok...   Just to clarify, I have far more important things to

  • Apologies is this thread is going a bit "off topic", but I'll carry on anyway as there is Golf R content... This is my personal experience of the S3, Golf R and M135i and the respective test drives.

Ok as all R threads have been merged here goes on the estate.

Linky below to the best full side on picture I have found of the R which is not set on a wide angle lens causing distortion which quite a few are which exaggerate the rear proportions slightly.

Also bear in mind that the Golf Estate has shorter overhangs than the MK3 Octavia in either hatch or estate.

& as per usual they get the price difference wrong yet again!..................idiots state £695 more than same hatch.............er other spec estates yes but the R estate is £1,365 more than the 5dr DSG hatch...............£32,220 v £33,585.......................

& the only complaint?......no manual...................stupid VW..... :wall: ........shoot yourself in the foot why not, it's not as if you have to tool up for it ! That's why you spent huge amounts of money on the MQB platform so that it is easy to share whole drivetrains/engines/gearboxes etc............. :@

Very happy with your action. :D

This thread will never die, never I tell you!

Every new snipped of info on any motoring website is a new post/link away. :)

I see no point in two threads, one for hatch and one for estate.

Merge cannot be undone.

Most threads about the same car are merged in other sub-forums here as well.

I assume market research from Audi shows people spending this kind of money typically want DSG?

That is it often, as well as simplifying the Ordering, Building and what people are going to pay to get the version they want, ie more dosh,

and sometimes it is just that the Manuals are having issues.

Not going to be that problem this time, or they would let us know.

Had a sit in an R on Saturday thhat turned up at my cricket match

Stunning,understated,quad pipes,lovely inside

My kind of car,,,,,

Just realised that over here in Ireland (not sure about UK) there is a Golf "Edition R" looks the same as the "R" but is the cheapskate model!!! I was thinking holy moly there's a sudden surge in rich people buying the top spec Golf as I was seeing them everywhere !!!.....alas no...its just wanna be's!!!

K:)

Yeah there's the R Line in various models (Passat, Golf, Polo), similar to the Skoda Monte Carlo editions I guess, look fast but aren't really!

So much better day to day driving package than the Audi RS3 imo

What mileage have you done in the RS3 to reach that conclusion?

Will be testing the RS3 VERY shortly.

However, my experience with my R and the Review attached is enough to tell me what I need to know.http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/audi/first-drives/2015-audi-rs3-sportback-review

My test drive will of course help me with hands on experience and a final conclusion.

However,RS3 will need to do a lot to convince me, knowing as I do the overall day to day qualities of the R. Coupled with VFM price that I purchased it for, with much discount .

Bit premature to say IMO then, the driving experience MIGHT just blow your socks off, without basing an opinion on a road test report

Don't think they can be all wrong, however I bow to your vast experience and superior knowledge of both vehicles

End of our discussion.

I roll over to the level of your sarcastic wit, we all know you'd never admit to buying the wrong car, that's obvious

And I have no desire to plague dealers with taking worthless test drives of vehicles which I have no intention of buying

At least one of the reviews claimed that demand for manual Golf R hatchbacks had been very low and hence not worthwhile offering as an option for the estate, although it's clearly easier for the like of VW to offer more options it's always going to be at some cost.  I had a look on autotrader out of interest, I can't seem to get a filter for the R's specifically but looking at the most expensive Golf's shows a lot of R's - certainly mostly automatic but still a reasonable number of manuals.

As time goes on it does seem to be getting more and more difficult to avoid automatics.

I genuinely think most of the reviews of the golf are a wee bit over the top. It's a good car, the engine is also good but as with most VAG cars it's a bit characterless. And to be honest that's the only reason I see any place for the RS but that may suffer the same fate. Just hoping that 5cyl does something

Kenny,

At 3/10 are getting the best and most fun out of your motor?

Kenny trust me the golf r is not characterless. I own one and when driven properly it is the opposite. You get much more rear end action when going round bends then my mk1 TT Quattro

3/10? Don't know what you mean

Mate I've had the more or less the same car for 14months. Driven one plenty too. I'm not dissing the car just saying it's not quite the holly Grail

It is the holy grail at 30k end of. There is nothing currently in it's price range which is as capable. Obviously this may change with news about new type r and new focus rs. But at present it is a bloody brilliant all rounder. BTW have you taken it to a track? Maybe just maybe that may change your mind when your able to push it to the edge legally
