New Golf R

If the these 7,8,9 speed cars were manual, they probably wouldn't be much use, even if the gear changes were brilliant. I think they only work because they are automatic and the changes are pretty quick.

Big gear knob for all those numbers lol

  • Apologies is this thread is going a bit "off topic", but I'll carry on anyway as there is Golf R content... This is my personal experience of the S3, Golf R and M135i and the respective test drives.

I do wish people would stop dissing BMW drivers as they're easily offended - and some have big sticks lol! ;-p

As for having a car on PCP not being the same as buying it, well I'll take exception on behalf of Amanda as it's totally irrelevant. PCP can be an extremely good way of owning a car. Yes I did say owning! After all, spending £30k on a car and having it depreciate by £10k over a few years is no different to spending £10k on a PCP package.

Let's keep this civil and inoffensive so as not to antagonise anyone........

I have a big stick in my Vitara :p I like manuals, but having a slightly dodgy knee these days, I find that the highish mileage I do means my knee can become quite sore. I have a manual Vitara because I do less miles in it and I like to keep my hand (or foot) in :)

Don't VAG do 7 speed DSGs in some of their other more powerful cars? Is it too big to fit in something like the Golf along with the 2.0??

I've got a 7sp DSG(500) in my Tiguan so you'd have thought it possible.

A good gear knob is important :) The Golf-ball knob was brilliant in it's day and I quite like the wand in my current car. But I haven't driven many modern cars with the sort of gear changes that you used to get in old RWD Fords. I wondered about the Golf's DSG partly because it seemed an easy way to improve economy/emissions/acceleration if they had a 7-9 speed DSG they could slot into the Golf.

Is that a diesel with lots of torks?

Is that a diesel with lots of torks?

Yes but IIRC the 210bhp petrol one has the same.

I thought it was the torckkkks that broked your gearbox if they were too bigs? Perhaps its a combination of the two, or maybe they are holding back for a halo car?

It needs to be good. Very important grip required. Gearbox makes or breaks a car

I thought this was a thread about Golf "R" ..............& now about gearboxes with the most ratios?............ :S

Well if you can't beat them................

Remembered reading about this last year so dug this out from Auto express, VAG have developed a 10 speed DSG which is the same packaging size as the 7 speed DSG & will handle 550Nm & will fit the MQB platform & therefore will be seen in the near future circa 2018..............

VAG has Porsche & they have been working on higher than 7 speed for a while............personally I prefer a manual & 6 forward is plenty enough. But because they don't (as of yet) make the Golf "R" estate in manual I won't get............

Unless I get bored & find a 6 speed Manual Golf "R" hatch with a rear end crash........... :) .........then just swap over the engine, ECU, gearbox, driveshafts, hub carriers, etc , & fit the lighter aluminium front subframe & front wishbones from the Audi S3 & a nice Milltek exhaust (only two outlets, not stupid four)....straight forward bolt on conversion (thanks VAG for the MQB platform).........create a one off 6 speed Manual in Tungsten Silver (again N/A on R estate) without the "R" bumpers, totally sleeper look.........that'll annoy a few people............. B)

With my recent experience putting a 500bhp TT-RS engine into a Yeti I'd expect a world of pain.

Might require loom and most of the things it plugs into.

These cars were 6 months apart in build date and the Can-Bus didn't like the door locks, wiper motor, headlights etc...

That's because it was an Audi CAN loom into a Skoda CAN loom....................mine is a MK7 Golf CAN loom into a MK7 Golf CAN loom, so same modules etc........plug & play.............only headache would be the security codes but that's in the instrument binnacle which would be swapped over

I hope it's as simple as you suspect. :)

Give you an example.............if I was to swap MQB Audi engine into my MQB Golf then I would have problems like you did, one reason is because Audi use a separate door controller for each door............VW only fit two & piggy back the rears of the front door controllers..........

EDIT

also most of the CAN, instruments etc  in my car as tick boxes for "4wd system installed", and the abs module is the same.......

Hmm, maybe I should have used a 2.5tfsi 5 cylinder Skoda donor instead... :D

Bugger!!!!!.............. missed this 5dr manual R with engine & drivetrain all ok........just both sides having panel damage & only 1500 miles!!

£17,500  CAT D............

Seriously temping if it was still available as perfect for rescuing the mechanicals.......

......TBH I have the space & money to do the swap, BUT having had the past 3yrs of high emotional stress that I have had (closing my business, mother in & out of hospital major surgery & father dying) I need some "me" time & to chill out............... :S

Talks cheap.

Just found this (old well Nov 2014) article about the VW Golf MK7 "R" estate, just about sums it up in my view............... :D

http://sniffpetrol.com/2014/11/20/golf-r-estate-kills-off-all-other-cars/#.VVC8Rk10zGg

‘We predict that pretty soon all car forums will be full of people discussing the Golf R estate they have ordered, or are about to order.'

Tell us about it :(

nb

And the Jaguar XE, Audi RS3, and any other hot hatchback out there (whether it has an estate version or not)

Talks cheap.

err.................you missed the post I did after that one you quoted & about the second up after this one I am quoting which explains why I am not doing it.....I have the money & space, tools, VCDS, & having taken apart various VAG cars over the last 20yrs I have mechanical & electrical experience with them & doing said swap is NOT out with my capabilities..............

err....   no I didn't, it was two posts up from mine.

So you still stand by your post "talk is Cheap" inferring that I either don't have the skill or money to do the swap & that the only way prove it is to do it then?...............

I know my skill level & if I hit a problems (very rare) & have enough money to pay a someone with more skill to do it.............plenty of people do "cheque book build" cars.........

As I stated I ain't ready for a big project due to the past three years anyway.......................but the swap is easy (advantages of MQB platform) compared to the "Cheque-book builds" that a certain forum member is doing............ :D

Unless you are trying to troll/wind up............. :p

Back ON TOPIC I know someone up here who has ordered an "R" estate in lapis,, might get a ride in it as I might end up doing some VCDS mods, mind you I still prefer the sound of my neighbours MK4 R32 which has the 3.2lt V6........... :sun: ...............was doing some VCDS fault finding today......

No trolling Fab, Just highlighting you get a lot of talk on forums and no action, bit like the ebay buyers who have no intention of buying. Observations on various project forums suggest that those that talk a lot tend to do very little doing with lots of excuses. The ones that get on with things do so in a quiet unassuming manner with out blowing their own trumpet and referring to apparent wealth, skills and expertise. That's how your posts read.

The math don't add up either for your intended project why spend 17.5K on a donor and rip apart a lower spec donor car forecourt value circa 18-20k.. along with a load of work for a total spend of 37.5k When you can buy a new car for £33,585 albeit DSG if you really want a manual that badly, swap out the box using the savings for the discount you negotiate and the money you recoup from selling on the DSG box. De badge the car, do the exhaust etc and you'd still be in pocket and with a better car at the end of it. Considering all of the above your intended project currently doesn't have much credibility.

Crack on and get it done and my view may shift (no pun intended)

Jings some folk love only their opinion being right lol....

I don't know why I'm still subscribed to this thread to be honest. It just seems to go around in circles these days!....

If I see anything that brings up reports in this thread again (happening a lot) I swear I will bin this whole thread permanently.

Please keep on track, civil, etc.

Thanks!
