New Golf R

Featured Replies

I was merely posting my thoughts. Everyone has different opinions. I like the thought of 5cyl as I've been more used to V6s and v8s.

No doubt of its capabilities for price. The s3 and golf R offer a great performance package

  • For 23k I'd be in a Cayman.  Not a bleeding Polo.

  • Wow! A bit of a fly on the wall comment in jest has been turned into me supposedly taking the credit for the size of the thread!?! Err...ok...   Just to clarify, I have far more important things to

  • Apologies is this thread is going a bit "off topic", but I'll carry on anyway as there is Golf R content... This is my personal experience of the S3, Golf R and M135i and the respective test drives.

I get what you mean Kenny. All of the VAG models are incredibly competent but soulless. As much fun and as fast as my car is, I don't yearn after it like I did my old alfas. It's too perfect, almost anodyne, and most of the time simply way too fast to be fun, where fun is exploring the limits. All incredibly capable machines, but that's all they are. And, to be honest is most of the competition. It's a crazy universe where 300bhp can get almost boring, taken for granted. One thing I have learnt, is the next car needs to have some idiosyncrasies, something to make it unique and different, to me. Nit to stand out to others, I prefer a Q car, but there is an emotional connection missing, and has been for some time.

Bloody hell stever750,it's never boring!(Leon 310 , Golf R ,m135i etc. WTF.

Cheer up mate ,the world won't end tomorrow.

You'd better start reading the ads in Classic Car Mag.

Everyone is allowed their opinion different people want and like different things

Each car has its merits but we need to accept they will have their downsides too

Can you tell the difference.

Before or After?

Big difference, didn't think it would be. I'm surprised!

The new golf r looks amazing

1st day trip out(200 miles approx.) with missus and her son, on this weeks holiday, mixed roads about 60% reasonably clear M4 and then Wilts cross-country A&B.

Smooth but brisk run, average speed 45 mph returned 37 mpg( eco mode). My weekly commute and general domestic use still returns an average of 34 mpg( Normal , individual and sport. mode).

My car is very rarely driven sedately( bought for fun and enjoyment) but is run through the mode ranges as and when appropriate, so a mixed bag.

Mileage now at 7900 ,Conti tyres holding up well so approx. 1/3 worn down.

One notable thing yesterday was the internal noise level of the running in Eco Mode, compared to my fun - shorter distance local run outs in the Normal / Sport mode. (n.b.60% in the car on my own, allows more fun flexibility) . Very smooth but still bloody quick when required but one hell of a difference in Db level and eardrum comfort mode.

So conclusion is than I will not yet be disconnecting the Soundaktor - yet, even though I'm an "oldish fart"

Maybe something is wrong with my car. 700miles on and I can not seem to get more than 240 to a tank of fuel......

donovan,

just getting to the brakes wearing off, and the tyres settling.

(have you checked and set your own tyre pressures?)

So what have you got, 3 or 5 door, manual or DSG and is it run on 99 Ron?

3dr, dsg, always vpower. I haven't checked tyre pressures since I picked up might do this shortly.

Please report back.

It is always interesting to see how those at Dealerships doing a PDI prepare and hand over a Performance Vehicle.

or just any Vehicle for that matter.

It is a shame that it is not only Trained / Qualified Technician that get employed / tasked to do them.

Combination imo, driving style and a tight engine.

Think I was getting initially about 260-280 per tank. Now much better at 7900 miles on clock

depends how your driving it I guess. my lowest on S3 was 305 but now way up. hopefully yours will loosen up over time

yean not a nice trend. as with all car thefts these days, this seems to be one of the easier methods and of growing frequency

Don't worry Keith, it's not about to end mate, but modern cars lack something in character. Fun is more than just horsepower and traction / fast cornering, especially as it's downright stupid let alone legal to push the grip envelope anywhere but the remotest places. Car theft is a huge factor in a purchasing decision, I'm pretty sure if it's happened to you, it would be the last overtly performance orientated car you'd own. The prospect of a thug with a baseball bat breaking into my house in the night isn't very appealing.

I was seriously thinking about a top spec Merc or BMW next. After reading those lists I might have second thoughts :(

same here. M4 and the RS4 are crossed off my list. This one big advantage of remapping, all the go without the show.

I keep getting tempted to get a S4, Debadge it, map it and just never wash or Polish it.

Had the S4 before my current car. Had a Revo map to 411bhp. Very nice engine & gearbox & interior &........... shame about the handling

But it's the Golf R Topic ,George.

But it's the Golf R Topic ,George.

Talking about the Golf R contemporaries are for all intent and purposes keeping it on topic(ish) :)
