Does anyone have a motion sensor cam to capture any carpark damage/vandalism?

I just have my blackvue managed by a PowerMagic box so it records permanently until the battery level drops to a preset level. It then stops so that it doesn't flatten the battery.

I've had a look tonight and I can get the cabling into the a pillar easy enough and get to the fuse box. I was an electrician in a previous life so the rest is easy. However..... I've just seen a mini 0806 package on eBay that comes with what sounds like a useful cpl filter and an OBD power cable. Has anyone seen or used an OBD port as a power source? Sounds like it's asking for trouble but makes a lot of sense for ease of install and removal!

I've seen those OBD power cables but didn't see the point when a fuse tap is so easy to install.

Incidentally, I have a Mini 0806 and can't fault it.

The fuse tap is indeed easy but plug and play seemed less hassle! There seems to be a few copies of the 0806, who is the original manufacturer Prog? Is there a specific version I should be looking for please?

Have a look at 'techmoan' on YouTube he is a good source of info. I have seen lots of 4th gen units and a couple claiming to be 5th gen, I'm not sure if the 5th gen is just advertising though sorry

Too many manufacturers for the 0806. Few bad reviews too, build quality wise and it's coming from HK seemingly so may be difficult to exchange. I have everything I need for a hard wire job on the way though. Just need to find a fuse to piggy back on, the manual says 18 is free?! Will need to check with the meter once I pull it all apart!

I use a drivepro220 front and a drivepro200 rear, both are pretty decent and can be picked up for less than £200 the pair now.

Ditto jonro2009.

Drivepros 200 fitted front and back, cost under £200 including including sd cards, piggyback fuses, etc. And can be picked up at your local Currys so no hassle about dodgy Chinese fakes.

So thats my Mini 0806 fitted, cable in the A-pillar using a cable rat, piggy back fuse etc. Happy with it so far, although one thing caught me out....

I was worried about having airbags in the pillars, so obviously I looked for the AIRBAG logo on the plastics like there are on pretty much every panel with an airbag inside it. However, whilst running the cable I sneaked a peak inside and heres a long white thing with AIRBAG printed on the side of it sat inside.

I still have all my teeth and my nose isnt broken so all went well!

Also no DAB interference, although I live in Cumbria and DAB can be hit and miss anyway! ;)

I wondered about the A pillar route for the USB lead, I tried and failed to dislodge the trim from it position so could only poke it in along side the door rubbers. Then realised it was a Curtain airbag that looked like it was one piece from the bottom of the A pillar across the top of the doors according to the sales brochure.

I did not want to run the risk of the USB lead fouling the airbag as it could quite easily do. After much head scratching and poking around (Not in the A pillar!) I found I could get the lead across the head lining and down the leading edge of the A pillar trim where there is a gap between it and the screen. I also found I could thread the lead down under the bottom front edge of the A pillar where it meets the dash and through to the area behind the side panel where I have attached my voltage dropper.

I would like to remove the A pillar trim to see if there is a better/safer way to run the lead without interfering with the airbag but can I get the trim to release? No. I have pulled it, poked it;  got cut and squashed fingers but it still won't let go! If seems its held in place by two 'tongues'  that need to be released then slide the trim up, but it's difficult to see inside.

I fed the cable into the horizontal join in the trim at the top of the A pillar, then down under the outside edge -  the door seal. Then into the side of the dash, having removed the roughly triangular plastic cover. Plenty of space in there for adapters, sockets, cable etc., I've got a three-socket adapter in there for front and rear cameras and the TomTom satnav.

(Just a reminder, eleven pages into this thread. There is a post earlier in this section, with photos, showing the fitting of the power feed on a Golf from the fusebox through under the dash, and the procedure is very similar on the Octavia.)

I have read this thread with interest. I am considering a dash cam myself after a couple of incidents which were entirely not my fault yet i received abuse from the offending party.

I would ideally want front and rear cams. The transcend ones seem quite small and discreet. Which, if leaving in the car for protection when parked up, is a must imho.

When hardwired, can they be set up to record as soon as you start your engine or do they need you to press a button to start the recording?

i Was thinking of a couple of the transcend cams but wouldn't want to be pushing a button on the rear one and then the front one everytime i set off for a drive.

The Transcends autostart recording as soon as you turn the ignition on (assuming you've hardwired them, which around half the tread discusses!). No buttons need to be pressed. And I understand that goes for other makes as well.

Thanks for this, much appreciated. i really must pay more attention to the detail in threads instead of skimming through. :-)

...there's a lot of chaff to get through though, apart from all the duplicated and asinine threads...

If you want simple and not too worried about trawling through threads, Halfords sell a couple of which? Best Buys and they even do hardwired fitting for thirty quid.

That was the way I did it, at first. Then thought if going from the headlining to the door seal then that would cross the curtain airbag (unless you went behind it). The curtain seems to be one piece so the cable, if going across the front would restrict the deployment. Not 100% sure about that but that's what I reckon.

I have my 12 volt dropper in the space behind the side dash cover with power from piggy backed fuse.

Anything that needs intervention in starting up isn't a very good dashcam! As always have a google for techmoan or look on YouTube.

As for the pillars and airbags, the pilars are very flimsily installed and the outside edge relies on the deal for a good hold anyway. I was able to pull mine back and look inside it from the top.

My usb cable runs up the door window side of the pillar then crosses the seam at the top of the trim, thus not fouling the airbag. Given the force they come out I'm not concerned in the same way I'm not concerned about the damage the 2 foot piece of abs plastic covering the airbag will do.

Halfords will install your camera for you, If rather use a COMPETENT auto electrician if doing it myself wasn't an option it must be worth the extra. As for Halfords camera choice I'm sure there are some good ones.

Only thing with the Transcend units is the chrome bezel around the lens, this is quite noticeable from the outside depending on position. Easy fix is to use some black electricians tape to cover the bezel so don't be put off by that. I use the drivepro220 front which has the GPS logger and the 200 at the rear, I didn't feel the need for GPS in both units as you can match up the two footage wise, saved a couple of quid too.

I've got the transcend and never worried about the bezel, been there for 2 years :)

Same here, I've not modified mine either. I was just mentioning it as Roblatus had said he wanted something discreet and the bezel may put him off but it's easily sorted, it's a pretty decent camera IMO and priced well for wha it is. [emoji3]

I have a chrome bezel on mine, just went over it with a black permanent marker pen, job done!

My thoughts exactly.

Installed my Transcend DrivePro 200 this afternoon. It's only using the lighter socket but the hardwire kit will be here tomorrow to tidy things up.

It's the new version so features an internal battery, bigger 32GB SD card and an extra layer of lens. Below is a link to the YT video - its been compressed a little by iMove and YouTube but I'm over the moon with it. The wifi feature is a nice touch too. Link here

Due to the lane camera housing I had to set it to the side but it doesn't really effect it.

Nice quality video Karl but maybe showing a bit too much sky causing the camera to darken?
