Ladyloki,

Is it possible if you can tell me if the bulletin that was issued, was done so by Skoda UK themselves or was it Skoda Worldwide that would have issued it. The reason I ask is that I

Skoda UK issues the bulletin Gaff, and Skoda Ireland will eventually follow suit I expect. Ask them to contact factory for confirmation on the issue.

LadyLoki,

He did say he had been checking with the factory but didn't have an issue with them, but then I asked him to look into it again as this bulletin had only been issued in the last week.

Skoda UK would have issued the bulletin but would they have been instructed to do so by the factory or would they have done so off there own back.

Thanks for your help,

Gaff

I think all bulletins are issued on Skoda UK's initiative unless it's a safety recall. Obviously it's a variable thing though... I have tried to find out where this one came from but no joy yet...

I tought that's simple for an engineer (like me)

My ARX Ocatvia 110KW has chassis#: TMBKL41U928547586

Is this # within the range quoted in the bulletin?

Thanks for waisting your time checking

To check the part # on the coil is enough to take of the engine cover ? - or a mirror would do the job?

I dont really know where the coil is ... I will take a look tomorrow.

Regards,

Robert

Remove the engine cover, you will see a line of 4 grey looking plastic covers with wires going into the back. To check the part number you need to disconnect the wiring then look on the top of the grey plastic near where the connector was. Its printed there. reconnect and then do the next one.

my dealer say they know nothing about this bulletin or about the policy to change the old coils????? im not so sure

This photo shows the visual differences between the H (ie old), J and L coilpacks. The H has a slot (arrowed) which extends as far as the head of the coilpack. This slot can be seen clearly without removing the coilpack from the cylinder head. The H has four 4 plastic 'rings' below the head whereas the J and L have 5. The J and L coilpacks have a shorter slot (also arrowed) which is not visible when the coilpack is in place. The metal mid-section of the H is longer than that of the J and L, while that for the L is a different colour. All three coils packs pictured were made by Bremi.

Those visual differences are in addition to the coilpack part number which is clearly stamped on the top of the connector section of the coilpack.

PS My dealer has replaced all four H coilpacks on my car with the L version FOC and at my request. :D

thx for the pictures, ill make sure they change mine then!! as long as they dont replace them with the older type again!!!

Very useful peice of information. I phoned my dealer and 'complained' in the politest possible fashion and they are replacing the remaining two type H coil pack. Thanks

I don't want to dimm your hopes chaps, but a mate of mine who has a seat ibiza cupra 1.8T is on his 4th coil pack (his car is only 2 years old) and after breaking down last time, he insisted on getting the "J" versions. A further few thousand miles on the clock, and this allegedly "fixed J" one has packed up too :(

Fortunately, it's such a bad and reoccuring problem that the AA chaps generally carry a few spare around with them ;)

So keep your fingers crossed, but from a seat point of view, the "fix" doesn't apparently sort it out

that's a shame :(

must say however that i remember *plenty* of instances with H coils going both here and when we were on vwvortex but i don't recall anyone here whose J coils have gone.

could be wrong.

  • 2 weeks later...

Had my car serviced on Tuesday and asked if they could replace the coilpacks as my chassis number falls into the possible dodgy coilpack area , the answer was "no" , was told that if I hadn't had a problem by now then I probably wouldn't  , but service manager gave me the number for Customer Services and said that if they authorised it then he would .

So on Thursday I phoned Customer Services who told me that they couldn't authorise it , and that if one coilpack goes faulty then they will replace just that one , but if I have a problem with 2 coilpacks then and only then would they change all four :(

Just had all mine replaced at Claybank last Saturday.

I haven't had one fail but they were the old dodgy packs so they replaced then FOC without fuss.

How on earth did they square that with what it says in the bulletin above?

Mine were replaced FOC by my dealer at my request. :)

Denis , I even quoted from the bulletin , but all to no avail :( , couldn't understand it either .

I even said that I knew of other people who had had their's changed without question , but it made no difference .

Funny thing is that a friend of mine , who is the parts manager at a local VW garage said that they are changing all the coilpacks on the affected chassis number range as customers cars come in for service etc , without the customer even having to ask .

SEEMS SOME DEALERS ARE BEING TRICKY HERE DUE TO THE FACT THAT THEY HAVEN'T FOLLOWED THE ADVICE GIVEN AND GOT THE PACKS IN STOCK

We are replacing all coilpacks on affected vehicles -- even if they only come in for a bulb change - they are being checked and replaced if required,it would appear some dealers are being very short sighted with regard to this bulletin -- why wait till you have 20 cars outside waiting for them ?? Beyond me.

Hmmmph - first bit of cold weather - went to start my car this morning, cough cough splutter splutter - another coil pack gone :(

I've got a couple of spares you can have...

Bought the bolody things a week before the service bulletin came out. My dealer replaced the ones in the engine FOC just last week...

I don't know whether to be pleased at the free replacement, or pi55ed off because I bought two spares I'm not likely to need...

Mike, I have 2 spares (J) as well. I'm keeping them in the car so that if I do break down, I (or the AA or RAC) can replace the dud one rather than get the car recovered to a dealer. Cheap insurance, really, and good for my peace of mind.

how much do the coil packs cost?

They are about 15 squids from Skoda.

Thanks Mike but I've got a spare myself - well technically it's Jons but i'll go and get another one :D
