Well here goes nothing.. after spending a week in Germany at the Nurburgring and a visit to Spa in Belgium i thought i'd crack on with the engine build. All them fast cars and i was in my van, not ideal to be driving quick.

Finished cleaning the block and painted silver, mainly so its easy to see any leaks, just a wuick job didnt go to town on removing all flaking paint only the easy bits. 

Pistons and forged rods built up with new circlips.

Crank in with KING Racing bearings all round, can feel the difference compared to standard.

Pistons in the block and bolted up using KING racing bearings again and ARP hardware.

New crank seal fitted into end cap and bolted up. New oil pump, chain and tensioner. 

Fitted a spare sump to stop and crap getting in, still waiting on my baffle insert to arrive before fitting cleaned up sump.

Hit a brick wall when trying to find headgasket.. i ordered one from ECP with a big order and looks like they missed it off, i presumed it was in the head kit when checking the order.

So the plan to have it all built up and timing belt etc on didnt go to plan.

After the head gasket issue, Euro Car Parts have realized their mistake and sending me a full new kit.

Who advertises a 'Head Gasket Kit' and doesn't supply the head gasket? They even have one in the photo.

I found that with 99% of head gasket kits, they don't actually come with the head gasket, just all the other gaskets needed when changing one, crazy

Got the head gasket kit today.

exact same as i origionaly ordered, just with the head gasket in.

was hoping to do it tomorrow, but may not get time. 

Started cleaning bits up today ready for refitting..

Had to put manifold on 

Super magnetic plug.

AwesomeGTI thermostat which opens at slightly lower temp to keep things cooler.

 

Well my sump baffle turned up today..

Haha its not hard nowadays with the quality of camera phones. 

Looking at books like haynes makes you wonder what potato they used to do them 

Bit more progress today.

Baffle for the sump i've managed to hammer it straight and bend it back to somewhere like. Fitted cleaned up sump.

cleaned up a few bits and sprayed up.

i'm sticking with standard rocker cover untill its up and running and it needs a few tweaks to get the smooth one fitted.

Inlet manifold and rocker cover sprayed hammered grey.

You can chop more off that alternator bracket. Iirc the stock one without aircon only has 3 bolts (just fitted one to mine but don't know where it came from... maybe Tech1e's engine).

I did think 2 bolts would be good enough, but thought it looked neater like this. Needs 3 bolts to line up properly anyway, last thing i want it the belt not running true.

 

few more. Its of the jigsaw arrived today. Hoping to have it ready to go back in the car today. 

Going to be a beast. I'm off to try and sort out my brakes... Less exciting

Starting to look like an engine now. Not really much to do, copper washers which arrived are wrong. So ordered them from local hydraulic place, pick up tomorrow.

Then turbo can go back on (never known such a sh!t job to fit, cant even het to the back bolt to tighten) then gearbox, decided not to paint gearbox as its too much effort tbh.

Fitted new actuator from BBT as they have updated ones. What an actual ball ache fitting this manifold is..

 

Manifold - turbo finally done. All ready to be fitted..

 

Its in, coolant pipes modified so they no longer go to the heater matrix. Not just a case of fitting everything back on.. not a clue how i'm gonna do the intercooler pipework though.

Set about the wiring today. Theres alot of stuff thats now on the opposite side of the engine to what it was. Alot of wiring that the plastic/tape wrap stuff had on had melted so wanted to use heat sleaving to protect it.  Trip to the scrap yard for a load more plastic conduit to protec the loom in all areas too.

Still more to do tomorrow but the hardest part is done.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Its a great time to do a wiring diragram for yourself. Coming back to trace a problem in 6 months time can be a bit confusing without one (Don't ask me how I know)
