VW CEO says recall to start in January, be completed end-2016

BERLIN (Reuters) - Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) Chief Executive Matthias Mueller said in an interview with a German newspaper that the company would launch a recall for cars affected by its diesel emissions crisis in January and complete the fix by the end of next year.

"If all goes according to plan, we can start the recall in January. All the cars should be fixed by the end of 2016," Mueller told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ). The newspaper provided a copy of the interview prior to publication on Wednesday.  For the U.S. market, a company spokeswoman said later, the remedy will first have to be agreed upon with Environmental Protection Agency, but she offered no timing for that.  Mueller told the FAZ that he believed only a few employees were involved in the diesel emissions rigging that has hammered the company's stock and done severe damage to its reputation, refuting the notion that his detail-oriented predecessor Martin Winterkorn must have known about it.  He said VW would have to become smaller and less centralized, adding that every model and brand would be scrutinized for its contribution to the company and singling out Bugatti.  But he said an "evolution" rather than a "revolution" was needed to get VW back on track, predicting that the company could "shine again" in two to three years.  "This crisis gives us an opportunity to overhaul Volkswagen's structures," Mueller said. "We want to make the company slimmer, more decentralized and give the brands more responsibility.   Mueller rejected the suggestion that VW had informed financial markets too late about the diesel problems despite having told officials at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) weeks before it went public.  "Based on our understanding of the law, we informed in time," he said.

The Skoda recall site confirms my 2012 Yeti 103kw TDI is " we are sorry to inform you......."

From another article

For most motors satisfy an update of the software. Some automobiles but may possibly need to have new injectors and catalytic converters.

That's mean smaller ones... less fuel = less power. Probably for engines 170 HP

Other way... "For most motors satisfy remap... Some cars may need to have smaller injectors and bigger catalytic converters..."

A new catalytic converter and new injectors at no cost for my five year old car might not be all bad.

$2000 this month as a 'loyalty' bonus for U.S. customers.

My 2011 Superb is on the list so sit back and wait thanks for the posted link. Any thoughts we may have on what the fix may be for our particular cars is pure conjecture. I think that VAG have got to come out of this looking greener than green so simply deleting the test mode coding would not suffice, I reckon you will end up with a car running permanently in something like test mode with reduced power and torque but improved fuel consumption and perhaps a reduction in your insurance. End of 2016 is a long way away and a lot can and will happen to VAG in that time.

Apart from the no,s emissions is there any point in getting the recall done if you are thinking of replacing your vehicle with another Vag in the next couple of years.?

My 2011 Superb is on the list.

Sounds like you have a pretty unique Superb there, a "TDi 179"?

If you don't it will be done prior to resale and for your loyalty I expect you will be 'looked after'.

GoAuto News speculates on the matter of govt struggling with the concept of 'compulsion'.

I imagine that aspect will be seriously looked at by most govt's.

I wouldn't be so sure.

Skoda were forced by VOSA to recall all PD170 engines a few years ago to replace the injectors.

You only need to check out the Octavia MkII section to see that this left a lot of cars much worse off in terms of performance and reliability.

Skoda UK were clueless.

I suspect poor old Skoda UK are struggling for answers also.

oops! Senior moment :0)

I'm confused! Engine type of my 2011 2.0CR Tdi is CFFB.

CFFB is on this list: http://www.autoforum.cz/zivot-ridice/vw-tdi-ea-189-mate-v-aute-motor-co-lze-skody-jsou-jich-plne/obrazek/2

CFFB is not on the Superb II section on this page: http://www.autoforum.cz/zivot-ridice/tohle-jsou-vsechny-skody-s-tdi-co-hraji-dvoji-hru-je-jich-vazne-pozehnane/

I've tried to keep up with this thread, honest!  Anyone have an explanation, please?

Thanks,

Stuart

Mine is also CFFB (2.0 CR TDI 2010 Superb) and unfortunately it is affected (confirmed both by phone and via web).

I would just trust official sources rather than any other article/source.

Cheers

Mine is a 2013 2.0 140 L&K YETI CFHC and is affected confirmed via the new web link.

My 2011 CFFB is too.

Although I'm pretty sure my car won't be going anywhere near a Skoda dealer, I like it just the way it is.

Was planning to change my car next year anyway, after the facelifts are released. I would rather see what is on offer, in case I may miss out on something better than currently available.

After the VAG fiasco, now do not know what to do. My Octavia is affected and my confidence in VAG. Px price comparison sites now indicate a much larger monthly depreciation of my car.  With the announcement of the VAG CEO today, that software / hardware revisions would commence from January 2016 and be completed by the end on 2016, may be time to change brand of vehicle if I can now afford it. I do not plan to let VAG force me to downgrade, unless I choose to do so.

Test drive in a Toyota Auris Hybrid tomorrow. This will give me a direct comparison to my VRS. May not be able to accept the diffence in driving experience.

The new Prius has caught my eye + Toyota TRD are ready to release styling upgrades (have seen examples). Might sound dull but this whole issue has made me reconsider life`s priorities. Better to spend on things that give pleasure, other than cars?

Fancied a Leon Cupra / Golf R but now off the agenda. Rather be safe but not sorry. Sad that low life's are now spoiling owning a car with a greater fun factor.  Why should I have to upgrade security of my property / garage / car, just because people with no conscience or morals may choose to take my pride and joy, by whatever means is necessary.

Toyota just as guilty as VW regarding dishonesty, but think diesel days will be numbered and now only driving 5-6,000 miles a year.

There are more than 2 brands in the motoring world.

Wow, is there really a Toyota TRD?

Citroen rearranged their letters to DTR ,many years ago on the BX, when they realised their mistake... :notme:

( sorry back on topic.)

Hardly novel.  the US auto sales business is so cut-throat every manufacturer has price cut schemes, dealer bonuses, military discount, preferred finance yada, yada.

And not just to clear old stock - they do it year round.

Have you driven a Prius? Going from an Octavia vRS to a Prius will be something of a revelation; best buy a comfy cardigan and carpet slippers ;)

TRD is Toyota Racing Developments like AMG for Toyota's stateside.

However Toyota did change the name of the MR2 in France (MR2 reads as "5hitty")

Unless it's desirable and in short supply.

TRD didn't last long in Australia .....it was an Australian manufactured Camry version.

Don't think I've ever seen one
