Columbus RNS 510 - Alternatives

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

I've got my 2009 Superb now with 7 months, generally very happy with it. A few niggle bits, but one of the most annoying is the Columbus unit. I guess too be fair, it is a pretty old unit now and has shown signs of failing with ah-hoc power-downs....and the music HDD is pretty crap.

So, i did a little digging on Briskoda and found some threads from 2013 about android alternatives and a kenwood unit. doing a quick google search today, gave me this;

Has anyone bought a new multimedia unit and thrown out the Columbus? It might be worth spending a few hundred on a new head unit, with far more recent and better features. some of the units on the link above look great, but i've not done my homework on them yet to see how comparable they are with the Columbus and Skoda its self for things like the Climate control or steering wheel controls.

can anyone shed some light on this subject?

thanks,

John

a lot of people looking at the android eonon units now, same fittings as the columbus

Ive not had any experience but a few videos on youtube popping up with them fitted in passats

I had a pioneer Appradio in a previous car and it was horrible! (admittedly it was an older unit than the ones linked).

Although it did interface with your phone apps there were very few that actually worked, the ones that did work didn't work very well and if you wanted to do anything normal like listen to the radio it was hopeless.  The whole thing was just badly thought out.

I presume the interfaces have got better but I would recommend trying to use one before you commit, I couldn't live with it and it got replaced within a month...

Hi, did you get a new unit? I am interested in replacing my Amundsen to get features like MirrorLink, but I don't want to lose to much of the integration with steering wheel control, handsfree and MFD.

There are loads of Chinese Android units, but I have no idea how well they work, and hard to find a lot of info.

I've just fitted the kenwood dnx521dab to my 2010 superb in place of the bolero. Got it for £500 (new, opened but not fitted on fleabay) but cost another £120 for the canbus module and harness so it displays the parking sensors and climatronic etc. Really pleased with it, interfaces well with the mfd on the dash including the navigation (after enabling with vcds). The only thing that doesn't work is the compass display on the mfd but I believe that is normal

Is it using the built in antenna for GPS, or did you have to fit another one?

There wasn't a built in GPS antenna as the original head unit didn't have navigation but I just mounted the kenwood one on top of the head unit (after reading of others doing the same), seems to work fine that way and only takes about 30 seconds after boot up to find satellites.

You could try looking at the NewsMy NR5261

I've got one, and i'm quite pleased with it.

It's an Android headunit, and it needs a bit of tweaking before running well (i have switched to XDauto ROM), which is working fine!

There are still some minor issues, like red light in the physical buttons (can be turned off should you wish), no RDS and TA on the FM radio, and no navigation/phone readout on the MFD.

Other than that, im happy, and sound quality etc. is just as good as the original Columbus HU i used to have...but everuthing is MUCH snappier, and being an android, you gotta love it for customizability :)

Buy from here:

And here are two very long threads about the headunit:
