Octavia 3 Navigation upgrade - options / ideas / thoughts

Please let me know more. DAB I do not need, the GPS antenna is absolutely no problem....coding is as far as I have read. Who made the coding? Do you know how complicated it was? I would appreciate all the details you can share!

It was not done by a Skoda-dealer, but at a company named 'Car Trends'. Funny enough, they do a lot of work for authorized dealers too. Not long ago I had service done at Skoda and I was a little worried what they would say. I had some gremlin in the parking sensor system that I feared the dealer would blame on the work from Car Trends, but it was no problem. A salesman I spoke to told me that they also sometimes use them to install equipment on demo-cars or cars that was ordered wrong and had something missing.

My Columbus-unit is a second hand unit that is somehow 'locked' for Skoda, so the anti-theft system doesn't spot that it now is in another car. I really don't know (or care about) the technical details, but installation took around 1 hour or so. It only took a few minutes to swap the units, and perhaps 15-20 minutes to change the antenne to DAB. It is situated at the rear right window (on a combi) and it was needed to remove an airbag at the back seat and remove a bit of trim to get the wire hidden. Coding took maybe 20-25 minutes. Again I don't know the details but some coding is needed, and since my car was the first with Canton he have installed Columbus in, it took a little while to get the Columbus and the Canton working.

The GPS antenna is hidden behind the dashboard, and that is the only thing that maybe isn't as good as a factory fitted unit with the roof antenna. It's not uncommon that my Columbus looses the signal.

Their website is only in Danish http://www.cartrends.dk

You can also find them on Facebook. They post a lot of pictures of their work on VAG-cars.

  • There is a factory approved sat nav upgrade for skoda seat and VW cars with the MIB2 bolero system. Available from Skoda dealers. £489 or £599 fitted. Its a box you fit behind the glovebox with a gps

  • Sorry, that's my language issues not the car setup I do have Bolero+Canton now (no navi whatsoever) and what I meant to say was: "if I had Amundsen I would have no urge for change".

  • Either way, in case of my configuration (Canton) the integration is rather questionable, as the amp is connected by fiber-optic wire. It requires special hardware and potentially extra config to make

Thanks citembe ! That's a real help!

I'll try to contact them and check if they could help me with my car.

Just a silly question re. contact: on their page there is the (CVR: 34 73 03 34) - is that a telephone number?

Cheers!

The phonenumber is 31 32 33 34.

Tlf is short for telefon(telephone) in danish and norwegian.

And nr is short for number.

If I could get Columbus it's nearly worth the trip over from Ireland!

There are multiple companies fitting factory Columbus systems(both MIB1 and MIB2) here in Denmark. The other company is VagStyle, they don't have a webpage as such but are present on Facebook instead where they post images of their work and respond to messages.

https://www.facebook.com/vagstyle/

CarTrends and VagStyle are situated in different parts of the country, i've personally used CarTrends to have him fit a factory/Original towbar on my Octavia, and he did a stellar job :) Next on my list is the Columbus ;)

While i was in he had a brand new Polo 6C(driven 8km, still in transport mode) a dealer had delivered to him for fitting of parking sensors back and front(of course original with Park-Assist).

And a brand new Octavia that was in for an upgrade from Bolero + Canton to Columbus MIB2 + Canton :)

I've received feedback from "Cartrends": "Yes we can install it. The MIB1 system would be 2200euro and mib2 3000euro" that plus the trip to Denmark (2x 1000km)...well I guess I'll pass.

Ouch...but well, at least I tried ;)

That's got to become available closer to home soon and the price will drop too.

I can live without an integrated sat-nav, but have to do something to improve the audio coming from my Bolero (MIB1).

That I have covered - Canton is in. It has it's down sides though - I have problem (no practical way of) fitting a 3rd party audio head unit. The positive side is that sound is not too bad (although door may go sometimes in resonance and so does the central speaker). What you can think of is a new head unit with better specs and/or an external amp/dsp. In case I had no Canton I would not hesitate to get an aftermarket unit - there is plenty cheap and good looking units like Adayo CE4M1A; I wouldn't go for Android or other over-cooked inventions, but sth similar to original units.

There were few topics on that, e.g. http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/305763-upgrading-car-speakers-after-collecting-new-car/

I had Garmin stand-alone device once. I really hated the software - the interface was laid-out in not exactly smart way.

Therefore I've decided to go with the Dynavin (freedom of map choice - any winCE-based gizmo should run on it) and ordered one. We'll see how it works and I'll post a proper review when done ;)

Anyway - good to know that Skoda made the thing with Garmin so official and available.

In case something isn't right with Dynavin, I'll re-consider the Kenwood (only open question being again the integration with Canton)!

A small update in the topic: I have received the unit to install on the Bolero (it's Dynavin).

I'm preparing to put it into the car and now comes the big question: does anyone know if unplugging the main factory unit can cause coding problems upon reconnect?
In other words, well, obviously I need to unplug the harness and LVDS cables from the control unit to put dynavin "in between"; should I expect any problems with Bolero after powering it all back again?
Should the battery be disconnected before the installation?
Cheers!

How much is the yearly subscription to PocketGPS I wonder?

  • 3 months later...

I had the Kenwood GVN-MIB1 (Garmin GVN60) fitted by Beadles Maidstone yesterday after two months of wrangling since agreeing to buy the car, with me doing all the chasing of the dealership!

Anyway I'm happy to answer questions / take pictures if it will help anybody. So far I'm not exactly blown away by the interface of the Nav. itself, but the integration with the Bolero is seamless and it seems pretty fast when calculating routes.

For future reference, this is upcoming and will have a estimated cost of ~€1200 with ETA end of September 2016:

Also, Alpine is rumoured to be coming out with a similar system, although more expensive. Either of them should be a better options than the stock system or those plug-and-play

I ended up now with Dynavin unit hooked up between the glove-box module and interface panel. Has some quirks, but works well in general.

Hi,

my VRS already has nav. Can the kenwoodunit be fitted as replacement of the skoda system?

I believe yes. Those units are "highjacking" the signal between the glove-box unit and the interface module.

OK thanks, I'll look into it
