Wrong Tyres?

Featured Replies

I've had my Fabia for 10 years (2001 model) and when I have needed tyres I usually go to the tyre place and they fit them.

Sadly, my Skoda has too many problems to bother putting it through its MOT (at least £300 to pass but other work too, including motor for the window - it has cardboard wedged in it to stop it falling down.  Time to say goodbye!

Anyway, I recently had all 4 tyres replaced (2 in December and the other 2 just last month).  I've put a deposit on a used car (2006 Citroen C3) and, before I scrap the car, I thought I'd see if the new Skoda tyres were compatible with the Citroen.  I used a couple of websites where you can enter your number plate to see the size of tyres your car takes (Blackcircles and Halfords) and both websites say my car takes  165/70 R14 but I noticed that my receipt says the tyres fitted are 185/60 R14 so I went out to check them.  4 very new 185/60 R14 tyres.

Have I been driving round with the wrong size tyres or are they compatible? (unfortunately the Citroen needs 185/60 R15 - not that I understand what the numbers all mean) or were they OK?  I need to take the poor car to the scrap yard but ask them to take the wheels off so I can sell them!

Can anyone shed any light on the subject?  Thank you!

The 165mm wide tyres suit 5J (5" wide) rims, the 185mm tyres fit 6J.  Your car obviously has the 6J wheels, if you take off any wheel trim or centre cap, you'll see this info stamped in the area where the bolts go through.

Oh, right...  I'll have a look in the morning (if it's not raining!)

My brother said the scrapyard should be able to take off the wheels is there anything else I should remove?  I could take off the parcel shelf but what about wing mirrors?

Maybe I should start a new thread about 'Scrapping a Skoda'?

If your aim is to sell stuff via this site, you'll first need to go to this page and purchase one of the top two categories of membership, then use the classifieds area to advertise.

Probably not, but thanks.  More after advice as to whether I should bother actually.  I'm just going to wait until I collect my new Citroen on Sunday (just in case my tyres will fit) and then I'll give it a go listing it on a local Facebook page.  If there's no interest it'll be straight to the scrapyard.

While ago my daughter scrapped a Golf shortly after fitting two new tyres on front. Mentioned this on another post, but I ended up trying the 185/65/14on mine in place of the 185/60.

No ill effects, to the contrary, car handles better.

I've always thought that what a maker puts on as standard is a great place to start when experimenting.

You're lucky, different sized tyres front to back usually confuses the ABS sensors and causes problems.

Your skoda tyres are for a 14 inch diameter wheel, and the citroen has 15 inch diameter wheels,so no chance they will fit I'm afraid! :)

Just trim the centres bigger with a Stanley, jobs a good'un (s)

Never had any problems, on mine, but it's amazing how far apart tyres have to be and at what speed to show any problems. Had this problem on one of our firms old transits- new to us ,but supposedly checked out by Ford and our lease depot. No problems up to 55, but pass 60 and the ABS warning came on. Test drive with laptop on, showed slight differences on one wheel at 55. After a lot of time wasting, ended up taking van back to our depot, with intention of getting our local Ford place to check it out. Van was a LWB HI TOP Transit, and on this model drive was to rear end. Next day- had a quick glance at tyres and headed for tyre place . Tyre manager first question was abiut ABS problems- "NS rear is small-it's the tyre that would be fitted on a FWD model". Can't remember the sizes, but normal fit of 215 /xx/xx came to mind, whereas this one was 175/185 /xx/xx .
