Gear selection in DSG

Featured Replies

Is it normal when selecting drive or reverse for the engine to sound like it is at biting point? The engine revs do not drop when drive or reverse is selected. Also after doing approx 30 miles on my way to work it is noticeable that the gear changes from 3 to 2 and 2 to 1 aren't smooth; there's a very slight slight jerk, the slight jerk means its not possible to brake smoothly. It is very slight - am i expecting too much, with the 'standard' auto the down changes were very smooth.

In anticipation of your replies - Steve

6 or 7 speed DSG? What mileage? Was it serviced on time?

Mobile version doesn't show your sig(nature).

Mines was doing the exact same till I had the gearbox oil changed and I think they reset gearbox again
Anyways drove completely different after it

Also try this which I found from a good V/w site to reset it then it self learns how you drive the car.....

My ride uses a 6-speed DSG and the reset procedures are:

a. put key in ignition and turn key to the position just before cranking
b. hold down the accelerator for 10s
c. let go of accelerator and turn key back to Off before turning it back to the position before cranking

If the reset is successful you will hear some shifting mechanical sounds for about 1 to 2s from the gearbox.

After the reset you will feel an vast improvement in the DSG shifting especially in the lower gears.

(I have never tried the above but found it from a site when I was learning about DSG)

Also look at this post particular attention to post 6 which tells another method of not turning key back to OFF  then finally  read post  7 which makes me think its best getting someone that knows what they are doing :D

I know my local garage does the oil change then resets with vcds so maybe better getting it done right

Was not aware of that procedure. Interesting to note for future reference...thank you for posting.

If your car is the 6sp DSG and is past 40k miles then a gearbox service (fluids and filter) will certainly smarten up the performance and is a 'must' to keep the cog changing sweet.

6 speed DSG and has presently done 555479 miles with a full service record. The 60000km additional work was actually done at 63800km (39664 miles) at a Skoda dealership so the gearbox oil/filter should have been changed.

Think I'll have the gearbox oil/filter changed for peace of mind and before considering the reste procedure, not cheap but certainly better than the worst case scenario which would be a new mechatronic unit.

I'll keep you posted after the oil change - hopefully i'll solve my problems.

The down change from 3 ->2 on mine is sometimes more noticeable.... I find it is worse when I am braking gently but is fine if I brake harder. I raised this to the dealership before the warranty ran out in case it was a DSG issue or start of one so that it was on record that I had raised it etc.... They took the car out on a lengthy test drive (My dash-cam proved this) and came back that all was behaving normally. The service guy was happy with my reasoning of raising it on record before the warranty ran out in case it did develop any worse etc... afterwards.

DSG oil & filter change is around £150 so not a massive expense.

Perfectly normal on a 6 speed DSG as when you select D or R the clutch is at biting point and partially engaged. That's how/why they creep forward like a conventional auto.

Perfectly fine as the clutches are lubricated with oil.

DSG oil changed approx 2 weeks ago, done a round a 1000 miles since then and car is 100% better, no jerkyness, smooth down changes etc

It does make me doubt that the oil was changed at the 60 000 kilometres service, despite the service record indicating that it had been done - I can't imagine that the oil would require changing again after approx 17 000 miles, not when its recommended that the oil is changed at around 40 000 miles. Hope the gearbox is OK and the oil change isn't 'masking' a problem.

NB: Despite the gearbox behaving now I'm still not convinced that its the best 'auto' I've had (I know its not a true auto in the sense that it doesn't have a torque converter but two electronically controlled clutches). My former car, a Mercedes 7 speed auto, was far smoother and a more enjoyable drive; my son has a Jaguar (an 8 speed auto) and that too is far smoother. The DSG box might 'grow' on me - time will tell.

Glad that has sorted your problems! The oil plays a very important part in the gearbox since it is used to lubricate all the gears and drive and lubricate the clutches.

It is a very good gearbox and I loved mine... but now I have a more traditional torque converter auto I can see that the DSG is nowhere near as smooth as them.

I always found setting off in the DSG a little hit and miss. Sometimes I could do it perfectly smoothly and other times I would just give too much gas and it would suddenly jump off the line.

On the hole though I was very happy and the DSG and I do miss the more direct drive feel that it gave over the torque converter sometimes.
