Tyre and brake life?

im on my 2nd set of tyres, cars on 60,000 with about 3000 miles at least left in them

 

still on original brakes all round, how much longer do we reckon?....

That's pretty impressive to be honest.

 

On my Octavia I replaced the original rear tyres after about 7-8 years and 40k miles on them. Still plenty of tread but were cracking a little.

 

The front brakes were also done about 45k miles and rears about 55k but it had done more town driving and was a DSG so you do tend to use the brakes more.

DSG doesn't allow as much engine breaking as a manual due to it's coasting function.

Coasting is when clutch is disengaged - DSG won't disengage clutch - or allow it to slip - untill very low speeds - so in normal traffic you can brake/slow down using engine - I'm doing it all the time and it works very well :)

I don't have/use "coasting" option.

My brakes are only 50% worn at 66k miles but I am on my third set of tyres. The first set of OE lasted about 12k miles.

Coasting function is only available on the newer DSG boxes but not sure about the 7 speed.

 

Yes you can predict the traffic and allow the car to slow but you tend to have to do this much earlier than in a manual unless you choose to switch to manual or sport mode all the time.

 

In a manual you are changing gears anyway so tend to go for a lower one when slowing.

 

So yes I think you do still use the brakes more even when predicting the traffic/lights etc.

You would be surprised how rarely I use brakes :) and the way I use brakes.

Car in front of me - I don't pay too much attention to it - I "monitor" it more subconsciously than consciously - I watch carefully cars in front of him so I can predict his reaction in advance.

And most of the time - like 75%+ - I know what he will do next - just by obserwing his behaviour and knowing the situation in front of him - so I'm not surprised by his reactions.

I got 34k miles out of the original tyres and hoping that the brakes last until it gets px'ed in, at around 45k miles.....

I also have a Superb Estate FL 1.6TDI, currently on 105k, fourth pair of tyres on the front with maybe 10k miles left in them, just put the third set on the back last week. Still on the original discs and pads all round. All helped by my mainly longer runs of 100+ miles on A road, dual carriageway and motorway.

I looked at my brakes last week and the original discs and pads look fit to last another 20k which means that they will have lasted circa 120,000 miles from new. I am very gentle on brakes and tyres though.

IIRC, got 70k from the front tyres. But the fronts have suffered punctures since so difficult to track the miles. 

 

I have a 130 mile round trip to work every weekday on A and M roads. 

I've been tracking my disc wear. I should really get out more.

 

At about 80,000 miles my front discs were down to 23.5mm (new is 24.8mm, minimum is 22) and the rears are 11mm (new is 12mm, min 10mm).

 

I am now at 90,000 miles and have replaced the front discs and pads.

 

I presume the car was on the original discs, but I can't say for sure.... need to look for the old service history.

 

 

I get about 22  to 25 k from the fronts  and 35 to 40 k from the rears

I'm still on original discs and pads all round on my DSG at 114K.

Haha! They do seem to be going on forever. Can't work out if it's the tyres or the car that is making them last so long. Having done the same commute in previous cars and the rears wouldn't last much beyond 40k.

blimey. I get 10k out of a set of rear tyres and maybe 12-15 from fronts on my ancient vectra estate. Looks like when i get my superb I'll never need to buy tyres again...

I wouldn't recommend card gambling with that poorly developed sixth-sense of yours - you would go bankrupt very quickly.

23000 miles done. Front tyres down to 5mm. That's a fact, not a porky pie.

Per chance - are these 205/55 16's?

 

I have this size on mine - continentals - that have 40k on them. Near end of life now, the rears wore on the inside somewhat when I drove thorugh France with the car stuffed with large passengers and loads of luggage (middle of tyre still healthy though)
