EV sub £30k comparison group tests.

Featured Replies

@lol-lol I absolutely agree re the running costs .

I didn’t mean the Soul or E Niro are expensive in absolute terms, it was more that when compared with the other 64kw offerings from Kia/Hyundai the Soul looks a bit pricey.

as I always buy on pcp, and accept that the deposit and monthlies are just the cost of owning the car, I don’t think that I’d get £100 more enjoyment per month out of a Soul than I would E Niro.

we are currently awaiting delivery of a Zoe, cracking deals around on them...should have had it about now but CV19 meant factory closed so it not even built yet. First world problems...

When they're sub £13k, I'll be interested enough to read it.  Never spent more than £13k on a brand new car yet.   Sub 30k is just not relevant to average people in a country where the mean

Anyone wanting a EV for short journeys and buying used can get bargains on 2-3 year old KIA Soul EV's that even dealers ask £15,000 or less for.

The range is pathetic on those though.

The benefit of an e-Soul over an e-Niro can just be the slightly easier in and out, which suits many.  The e-Niro access is OK, and seating height but there are those that prefer being a bit higher, and also being able to see out the top of the windscreen if they need the seat pumped up.

EDIT, I will get a wee shotty when the dealership re-opens.

Be interested to hear how you get on with the Zoe   Think I saw somewhere they are going to put the ZE50 gubbins in to the Karjar which is a long overdue move.

@Roottootemblowinootsoot are you getting the Soul per picture (it’s the colour scheme I’d put on the configurator)?

@lol-lol I’ll certainly update re the Zoe. We have a call in to the dealer to see if there are any suitable cancelled orders but we’ve not heard back yet. Currently SWMBO is car less as her old ride went back 2 days ago at end of pcp..Got to say I am looking forward to getting hold of it...

@FatWolfie  That is the Demonstrator at the Kia Dealership next to the Vauxhall Dealership i am getting my e-Corsa from.  (One with Grey cloak of invisibility.)

Same owners have both the KIA & Vauxhall dealerships 1 mile down the road from me.

I have driven the original e-Soul a few years back when i was looking to buy one,

and have also driven the e-Niro and Niro & Plug in but they are not my cup of tea.

Which spec did you go for?

I am torn between the two extremes !

Ah I see @Roottootemblowinootsoot . Be interesting to hear reports on the Vauxhall when you get it.

what didn’t you like about the E Niro? I was disappointed in the paint finish (very orange peel) and the boot space was quite tight for my needs due to the sloping back . We have ex racing rescued greyhounds which are quite tall dogs so they need a squarish boot space .

@lol-lol we have gone for the 135 GTi line, metallic paint (Aconite - or purple to you and I), CCS rapid charge plug, and winter pack to get the heated seats and wheel.

out of interest was talking to the Skoda dealer today about the Enyaq to find out when they will be able to take orders, looks like November this year. From what I’ve read the size is between Karoq and Kodiaq, and having checked out boot size and shape of Karoq today I think the Enyaq will be just fine for my needs. ...

@FatWolfie There is nothing about them i do not like other than the looks, and i have had plenty fugly cars.

I have a big vehicle when i need one and just want a small simple inconspicuous EV for some fun.  The Peugeot e-208 seating and steering wheel / cockpit are horrible.

The Skoda Enyaq is a £40k car isn't it?

For that price, I'd rather have a car that can access Tesla supercharger network.

Short range EV is a solved problem, solved back in 2011. Long range EV relys heavily on infrastructure. We need to see reliable CCS network with more chargers than typical peaktime needs, at each highly visible location. Until then, there is only 1 brand that can replace my dino-powered family car (currently a Skoda dirty diesel).

I see petrol stations are stepping up to the challenge. 4 150 kW charger at a motorway petrol stations I stop regularly. But then, at same service, there are 8 Tesla superchargers right next to Welcome Break entrence......

@wyx087 Agree that £40k puts you in M3 territory. But primarily irrespective of the range, the car needs to fit the user’s requirements which for me means being able to transport 2 X 30kg greyhounds in the car. Sadly this is not practical in the M3 , and the S and X are too big and out of price scope.

Like the vast majority of people most of our journeys are relatively short and well within EV with a genuine usable range of 200 miles for a round trip.

We have the odd foray to Scotland but that is only around 215 miles each way so with a top up on route (and we always stop for a break anyway) I don’t find the Tesla Supercharger advantage enough of a motivator to restrict myself to the Tesla range of vehicles.

for the record, I am very pro Tesla, in fact it was a test drive in an M3 that convinced me BEV are the future for our daily needs. If we didn’t have the dogs then anM3 would be on the driveway already 😁

M3 is a BMW isn't it? 😈

I agree that the Enyaq will have its work cut out at that price point, competing with base level Model 3 but I don't think they are competitors for the reasons you make above. The Tesla Model Y is more like a rival for the Enyaq - a mid size crossover. By the time the Enyaq gets to the UK the Model Y will be selling here. I've extended my current lease to see if Model Y or Enyaq / ID.4 fulfil my needs and are within price range. (Like you we have two dogs needing transport.)

  • 2 weeks later...

Hardly worth finally including the Skoda iV and Mii Electric if he is just going to ignore the less expensive cars and big up the VW e-UP! he must have been loaned. All 3 built in the same factory.

He might as well mentioned the DS & e-Corsa sister cars to the e-208.

As for the Kangoo, not seen any new ones out yet, but hopefully they will be about soon.

IMO the MINI looks good when not looking obvious as being an electric version,

and the DS3 is just naw, & even with a darker interior it will be like a tarts handbag.

@Roottootemblowinootsoot Have you got a collection day for the E Corsa yet? I’m looking forward to reading your findings...

you may also already be on it but there is a pretty good EV forum called SpeakEV.com. I always use Brave as the browser there though as if not it is clogged with adverts..

@FatWolfie

Hopefully get mine at the end of this month or before.

I have driven Demonstrators carefully, and ragged the life out of a couple of e-208's on extended tests.

The Corsa handles better, but the first one i drove was a Media car with Michelin Pilot Sports, and the next on Michelin Primacy rubbish.

The range can be good at normal speeds in ECO or Normal and no A/C, and you can still kick down,

but in Sport on fun roads with 'B' you can still get 170 miles range.

Acceleration not too bad.  I will try and look at one at local Vauxhall dealer.

@lol-lol

You hear the wheel spin with the TC off.

Better road surface needed, or tyres, or do it as with your old car, slight roll and then floor it for a good 0-70mph.

With better traction conditions I could see half a second or so knocked off the 0 to 60 which is no half bad figures.

@lol-lol

Betters still if you do a couple of burn outs first.

Seems that the e-brake can work like a 'Line lock' if held on and the power is not cut as would happen with say a foot brake and a DSG.

(Not that you would do that with your own car, but then demonstrators are meant to let you see if you like that model.)

Very very nice and I love the red.

My Clio Nav S is a similar cracking red and the Tracer.

Octy is black, terrible when dirty.

We had a call from the dealer yesterday...the new Zoe should be at the UK import centre on 16 June, and with us by the end of the month.

even more excited now having seen the above videos! We went for the Aconite colour (metallic purple), but it was a close call with the red.

Hard to believe it can be only 60kg heavier than a Peugeot e-208.

215/55 R 18's rather than 205/45 R 17's.

(The e-208 can come on 195/50 R 16 tyres)

More room so more like a Peugeot e-2008

Needs to drive to Barnard Castle, then he might notice the tyres are not 60 profile.

Sub 200 km range at fast highway speed not too great.
