noise insulation

Featured Replies

I had this checked a few months ago, everything was fine.

Could it be that I insulated it incorrectly?

I insulated the vehicle floor with STP Black Gold + Comfort Mat Raptor.

For the doors, I also used STP Black Gold + Comfort Mat Raptor on the outer sheet metal (I still had a few sheets left). On the inner sheet metal I only used STP Black Gold, and on the trim panel I applied some alubutyl in a few spots and then a 5 mm foam.

Is water-resistant foam needed on the outer sheet metal instead of the Raptor?

And for the trim panel, would a thicker foam be better instead of just 5 mm?

Tried some high density foam in the bottom of the B pillar?

Has anyone on here needed to do sound deadening on a L & K?

No, B pillar is untouched. Is it really worth it?!

Yeah, read further back up in this thread. Some noise is coming along the chassis then up the B pillar to hear right by your ear

Yea my superb already have the accustic windows at the front doors.

Then it seems like I have to deal with the current sound level

Then you are entering the realm of the fanatic, for which I have seen only a could of friends go into as much as dismantling the pillars' trim and for example, filling up the holes - say for example where your safety belt is attached, etc.

Also doubled the insulating material: whereas I would do the metal on the doors, he would double on the metal on the door AND on the backside of the door cards, trim, etc.

Sprayed additional ...don;t know the name in English, like a "body filler" antirumble in the underside, drop the gearbox (longitudinal, older Audi) to put in the "trasmission tunnel", and when the engine was overhauled, also the bulkhead on the engine side, on the cabin side as well but earlier when the interior was out.

Also the ceiling, which actually does make a sensible difference.

All in all, I cannot tell you if is that much of a grandiose difference, but that was the maximum crazyness I've seen at play in the realm of "mechanical" insulation.

I have a friend that makes speakers that says with a proper kit and mics you can record the bothering noise frequencies, and try to counterthem to find acoustic balance ... too much people with too much time in their hands, perhaps 😁

maybe have a connection to unfound "ventilation" holes

it's now better than A6 from factory, but still far away from BMW5

Okay, I have some comfort mat sound trap left - I guess that's perfect for the bottom part of the b pillar + I may add some alubutyl on the medal.

@MartiniB do you think that the tyre noise is everywhere in the cabin, or from specific spots?

@DrAvalanche

dominates front bottom, around the legs,

but what interesting, it's less annoying when i'm on passenger(right) seat

I'm curious to see the results once you’ve modified the suspension D

I have to ask again: Was my combination of STP Black Gold + Comfort Mat Raptor a good choice for the car floor?

The point I'm thinking of with that subframe change on the Mk2 is that the std one is hollow steel, just like the mk3 one. Is that resonating tyre noise into the whole of the car?

Has anyone looked at NVH dampeners from the BMW range? I read that some are optional on some models when they get larger wheels - e.g. X5 with 21"+ wheels has an option for dampeners to reduce road noise

It's also interesting to me that I notice that the chassis noise is not as annoying on the passenger seat. It can be annoying even on bad asphalt.
