What have you done to your Superb III today?

Featured Replies

Not exactly today, but a couple of weeks ago I polished the whole car with a polisher and very fine compound and applied a ceramic coating. Looks better than factory  and water beads right off ;-)

Chucked a bucket of water over it. Three hours later this is the result.         Happy with that

Excellent work! Any photos? Mine could do with that same treatment, it's covered in a lovely coating of road salt

Here are some photos, that don't really do it full justice. It looks amazing. I was quite scared of attacking an almost new car with a polisher since I have very little experience with that (had only done the hood of my Astra), but it turned out fine. Was left with a few holograms that were very light and came off with some additional hand polishing.

That looks fantastic @pcspinheiro

New discs and pads time. 3 year old discs were corroded and lightly scored. Reckon the car was just not driven enough by the previous owner to shift the corrosion. Pagid disks and Brembo pads from ECP. Very reasonable at €100.

Today, I:

1. Turned on my heated seat for the first time in a year. Wonderful. Very quickly switched down from three bars to one bar.

2. Thought I had my first failure in two years when I switched on the Columbus infotainment unit and nothing happened. Wouldn't load media, radio stations wouldn't play, then none of the buttons would work at all. Wouldn't switch off. Held the "on" button for several seconds and it finally switched off. Pressed again and it worked fine. Must have been the cold.

3. Studied the new scratches on the left rear bumper where one of the neighbours rubbed bumpers with me. Two four-inch scratches revealing black. Sigh. Will touch up when the weather warms. To my surprise, no one left a note.

1. My wife's heated seat is permanently on level 3 setting :o I work shifts at not very sociable hours so mine is on in the wee small hours of the day

2. The classic infotainment hang. My old car did the same. They're too clever for their own good these days

3. Sorry to hear about the scratches and even more sorry to hear your neighbour/culprit didn't leave their details. Rotters! I hope you can get it sorted when it's warmer

Had my 280Tsi Sportline lowered on Eibach Springs in anticipation of my new wheels and tyres arriving tomorrow B).

Hey what's this? We (280 Sportline owners) want the full story here :tongueout:  :

1) Where and by how much did the car's behavior change? 2) Any measurements before/after or at least pics? 3) Other findings and overall conclusion?

That would better be posted in its own thread in fact. I am considering Eibachs so I can use all the info I can get for this setup on a 280 Sportline in particular as I'm not sure whether the L&K and Sportline share the same dampers at the same tuning state so some past findings from Eibachs on a L&K 280 might not apply to the Sportline and vice versa.

Technically yes, but in reality it's all done since last November when I signed under the dotted line... Also, I won't even be a 280 owner exactly but a 272, the amount of inaccuracies within those 4 words!

In all seriousness, there is incredibly little information on the subject of lowering options and results for the Superb Sportline especially for a forum like Briskoda. No photos. measurements etc. just a couple of incomplete threads :worried:

Ha, the full story!

A stupid middle aged man buys a practical car in a stupid colour and can't help but do stupid things to it as he has never grown up and refuses to act his age!!

Sadly, if cars are more than just a transportation device to you, as they are for me, a lifelong passion for tweaking never goes away, so I find myself with another project.

Anyway, in answer to your questions,

1. Nothing dramatic to be honest, and could possibly be viewed as a waste of time, BUT, I believe the subtle differences have made a worthwhile alteration (to me at least).

The ride is possibly improved a bit, but I couldn't understand others complaining it's hard anyway. Body control is improved and it feels just a bit more planted with less float.

2. No measurements but definitely lower. Again, because the Sportline is already 15mm(?) lower anyway, you aren't going to see a massive "stanced" look. If I wanted that I would've bought coilovers, but as the car is our main one and only 8 months old, I wanted to maintain practicality.

Pictures on here are a problem as I'm rubbish with computers and don't know how to post them. However, I have set up an Instagram account and have today added some pictures from last week after the new wheels were fitted.

3. Other conclusions. If you're that way inclined and are contemplating doing it, go right ahead, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

For me the biggest change in feel has come from the new wheels though.

I have gone to a 20" wheel, but they are lightweight flow formed wheels which are noticeably lighter than the standard 19's, and as such the car feels lighter, steering has more feel probably due to going from a 40 profile tyre to a 35 profile and overall just a bit sportier.

You are never going to make a Superb a true driver's car, but as with my other posts, I really like this car because of the way it drives as standard. I like the space, comfort, performance and economy balance and didn't want this ruined or changed, I just wanted to make it my own.

The Eibachs  are not model specific, they are platform (MQB)/axle weight specific, so they are also for the VW Touaran etc (7 seat people carrier) surprisingly, and something i was slightly dubious of, but have found no negatives, and when I bought them, they were the only brand available immediately.

Gave my 220 Sportline a good run in the snow today with the winter boots on (Dunlop Winter Sport 5s), and they are absolutely incredible. Not a hint of traction loss, even in some fairly deep snow, and on some icy compacted bits. Finally, my investment in the set of winter wheels/tyres has paid off. Can't recommend these tyres highly enough. I really think the UK should consider mandatory winter tyres, given the more extreme winters we've had over the past few years.

Lovely, and exactly what I wanted to hear! If I may elaborate a bit further:

I like to drive my cars fast but I hate stanced cars, I've NEVER lowered a car to that extent or with that intention. Some people (generally speaking) confuse lowering with slamming, totally different things.

To make this clear: My fear with the Eibachs or H&R was that even with a 20/25mm drop (on a Sportline due to being already 10/15mm lower than standard) was whether they would drop the ride too much! I would never consider anything over 30mm.
To make this even clearer: My ideally lowered car is one that doesn't look lowered, one where the arch gap left and right of the wheel is equal (or very very close) to the top arch gap, a nice universal clearance all around the wheel.

Am I right in assuming the Eibachs provide something very close to what I describe? I'd rather stick with stock springs than look as if I'm too cheap to replace my broken shock absorbers...

Springs are anyway primarily about controlling ride height and only a part of the dynamics, for reducing body-roll an upgraded rear arb is the default go-to solution and is already my first confirmed mod so I would not demand anything great from a set of springs in that department. I will be switching to different wheels and tires also from the very beginning.

All sounds very promising then, now let's see those Instagram pics, account name?

PS. Briskoda is really an easy site to upload pics to, you could even Copy/paste from paint or just drag n drop files while you post, both simpler tasks than finding a contact from your contacts list and calling it with a modern smartphone! :D  I could provide assistance if you wanted, just drop me a PM.

I can't really comment on "slamming" or "stance" as I have done this, and continue to do so with the right cars/projects, and currently own just such a car B).

Back to the Superb though, the Eibachs have levelled the car whilst lowering it slightly but noticeably.

It's unlikely that I will go any further with the chassis as that isn't what this car is about for us, although i did find some very reasonably priced upgraded Bilstein shocks the other day for the MQB platform which along with the Eibachs create a package that used to be highly recommended.

Next for me are possibly some spacers, and then it's booked into the body shop early February to have the textured black standard rear diffuser sprayed gloss black to match the rest of the Sportline trim and a Maxton rear diffuser panel added. It will also get the matching Maxton front splitter added.....it's just that they have three options and I cannot decide which i prefer!

I won't mention the graphics, but will say the APR cars have very eye catching designs :giggle:.

Seems they could be just right then, but I'll need to see mine in the flesh first, as well as some lowered pics to make sure. I consider springs a 60-40 mod (biggest part being aesthetics, the other dynamics) but for pure handling improvement the rear arb is where all VAG cars should start from, huge difference during cornering at practically 0 ride comfort penalty (as opposed to springs that stiffen everything but don't even come close to body-roll improvement).

I think I will beg to differ as to what a Superb could be though. Yes it's big, (actually seems even bigger than its dimensions suggest) and as stock it's not exactly a thrill machine BUT, as far as 300bhp AWD family sedans go it's nothing exceptionally heavy, quite the contrary. Then it is fortunate enough to benefit from a very solid and adjustable platform with huge aftermarket support that lets you take any approach you like with it. The potential is great in both engine and chassis modifications. You could always get silly but I'm not talking about that. A wise selection of springs-dampers/coilovers, arb, engine mounts, alloys and tires can go a long way into making it an infinitely more enjoyable and capable car when driven hard, while retaining the role of the family carrier. Is it the ideal car to turn into a track toy? Absolutely not but that's going to the other extreme. There's a lot in-between. I am pretty familiar with MQB cars of identical drivetrain so I've already got a big list, depending how satisfied (or not) I will be after each small step. If I get the time to go through it as planned it will surely  be fun.

PS. Graphics? What you do mean graphics?? :o

PS.2 Still waiting for that Insta account

Graphics - As I said, if you google APR and look at their cars with the full graphics/branding, I just like the designs and have previously carried out something along the same lines.

I've added some # so pics should be able to be seen under briskoda, skodasuperbsportline, dragongreen.

Had Reversing camera fitted and de badged the rear

Black Monte Carlo emblems fitted hopefully being done once weather improves

Yeah I know what you mean, was just joking whether you did mean that as I find it a bit over the top for something which is not a show car or similar, but that's just my opinion.

Found you on Instagram too, Dragon Green with bronze wheels is surely a unique car! What surprises me is how "normal"  the 20" wheels look, those arches can definitely use some filling it seems. If I didn't know they were 20" I'd never assume they are anything above 19" so I quite like the size choice. Couldn't figure out what annoyed me in the close up pic, but then found it, the mud flaps!  :tongueout:

Regarding the height with the Eibachs I think they look good from the pics. Again, for my like, 5mm higher would have been the perfect spot but since that's not possible, If I had to choose between this and stock I'd probably go for the Eibachs. Also, not sure but seems like spacers wouldn't be a bad idea from what I can see, something subtle like 12/15 (depending on the Ispiri's offset)

Did you have this done by the dealer or do it yourself?

I'd be interested to know how easy or difficult it was and the costs involved as I'd like to have one fitted to mine.

Do you know if it's just plug and play inside the boot area or if it has to be plugged into the unit in the dashboard?

Is coding required?

Hi

I had it fitted by my local dealer, they were unsure as to whether it would work as (apparently) they can only be retrofitted to a vehicle produced before week 1418  (mine is a 1418 car)

They offered to test before final fitting and if it didn’t work then return it at no cost to me.

I was quoted £430 but it did require an additional harness which was £23.

I realise I could have probably got it done cheaper or done it myself and then had it coded but having only just collected the car I decided to have a dealer do it as it warranted then as well

I am impressed with the camera , much better than the one in my old car (DS5), kit more functionality and night vision is really good.

Changed Skoda emblems for Monte Carlo black ones

And for the first time ever , I have washed , polished and waxed

I know I am biased but it does look good

Yes, I discovered that later. I don't think I have to keep the green caps though, do I? Is there any good reason to use nitrogen?
